Dear ITASCSC Members

When asked ldquoWhat is ITASCSCrdquo I advise that this

organization can engage townships with its senior

population in meaningful ways through the

knowledge and experience from its members We

are a resource and wealth of information and ide-

as educate others on senior population needs and

concerns and networking opportunities worth its

weight in gold Membership is necessary for town-

ships interested in service to the largest population

of seniors we have seen

I am very proud of our annual newsletter put to-

gether by Susan Dillon of Ela Township and our di-

vision website wwwitascsccom I believe both publi-

cations provide information on programs and op-

portunities for people working in the field In addi-

tion we are recognizing townshiprsquos ldquoCommitment

to Excellencerdquo Awards This year we have had a rec-

ord number of applicants in the six categories It is

my honor to announce the winners and insure that

they are recognized for their hard work and dedi-

cation this year

In closing I am grateful for ITASCSCrsquos belief in me

to lead I value the opportunities knowledge and

friendships gained through working with this stel-

In Frankfort Township senior citizens are very important people

They are the cornerstone of the community the people who made the area

what it is today

And they want the seniors to be able to remain in their hometown Frankfort

Township was the first township in Illinois to offer secure comfortable and

very affordable housing for senior citizens The Autumn Valley apartment

complex has 24 one-bedroom units each with its own garage and conveniently located near shopping transportation recreation and a

forest preserve The Landings offers large two-bedroom apartments in an elegant building featuring an elevator underground parking

and beautiful wooded views

As a senior nutrition center the township partners with senior services to bring hot dishes to frail and

homebound adults Will County Senior Services is the only provider of home-delivered meals in Will

County through Meals on Wheels The township also maintains the Nursersquos Closet a place to borrow

crutches canes shower seats and other medical equipment free of charge

But whatrsquos life without some fun They might be the golden years but they

shouldnrsquot be the boring years Frankfort Township hosts events trips and

parties tailored to seniorsrsquo tastes There are twice-weekly bingo games kara-

oke sing-a-longs and inexpensive excursions to shopping malls casinos and garage sales Some of the

activities are so popular that the Frankfort Township seniors invite friends who live in other communi-

ties to attend

Perhaps most importantly Frankfort Township believes in its older residents ldquoIn our community sen-

iors are valuable productive people who make the area a better place to live for everyonerdquo Moustis said

FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP

BLOOM TOWNSHIP Bloom Township Senior Services offers a variety of programs and services but one stands out each and every

year the Annual Senior Picnic

Hosted by the Supervisor and Board of Trustees this annual event pulls a huge attendance with 2013 being

one of the biggest with 498 senior and disabled persons from Bloom Townshiprsquos 12 communities

As seniors arrived were greeted with an optional friendly golf-cart ride from their car to

their picnic table or they could walk the grounds of Veterans Memorial Park to find a picnic

table in the shade The golf carts were donated by the Chicago Heights Park District

The morning hours began with over 35 different vendors ranging from State Agencies like the Illinois Treasurerrsquos

Office to local hospitals and home health agencies These vendors displayed their wares and services and various

give- a- ways to the seniors who eagerly awaited the information they had to share This year one vendor even pro-

vided snow cones to the seniors They loved that

Our favorite DJ was spinning familiar songs and played games with the seniors and even a caricaturist was on hand

to create a fun portrait for seniors to share with family and friends

A delicious chicken box lunch was served around noon to go along with bottled water pop and beer that had been flowing since the

morning hours

After a large raffle of over 300 prizes a three piece band continued the fun mood throughout the afternoon

The picnic was a success due to the cooperation of all of the various departments in the township The Senior Department staff

played an essential role of course as did the 40 youth that were part of the summer work program These young adults gave special

attention to the seniors on this day helping them carry their chairs and assisting riders off the Senior Wheels buses The Senior

Wheels Transportation Service usually transports more than 100 seniors to the park on picnic day

This year was wonderful due in part to the elected officials that attended to meet and greet our seniors Cook Coun-

ty Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Clerk David Orr were in attendance along with State Repre-

sentatives Anthony DeLuca and Marcus Evans

Again with the cooperation of the Chicago Heights Fire Department a paramedic unit was

on hand all day in the case of an emergency The local Police Department from Glenwood

was able to guide seniors in and out of the park safely into traffic on the busy road

The weather always plays a critical role and this year it couldnrsquot have been nicer

A good time was had by all and boy am I tired We all look forward to next year

HOOKED ON FISHING PROGRAM AND ANNUAL FISHING DERBY For many seniors fishing was a part of growing up Perhaps they would go with their father grandfather or as a family In this regard the tool of reminiscence is the reason Perhaps many of our seniors have been in stressful jobs and now they need time to do things that counteract the stress Fishing is both an individual activity as well as a group activity ldquoIn this busy noisy impatient world we are moving faster and quicker than ever Many of us wear stress like a badge of honor and take pride in exhaustion Perhaps we wonrsquot solve these problems by going fishing but Irsquod like to think it wouldnrsquot hurtrdquo Setting Goals

To increase participation in recreational fishing through educational workshops and day outings To learn how to partner effectively with the Department of Natural Re-

sources to provide educational lectures and the Access to Fishing Program-- a pilot program that gives your agency fishing poles to lend out free of charge WorkshopsOutingsFishing Derby

Partner with local fishing clubs and businesses that are knowledgeable in the sport of fishing For example Salmon Unlimited Ed Shirleyrsquos Bait Shop etchellipWe have invited them to present a few programs throughout the year We normally have a Kick-Off event in March before the sea-son begins that features a speaker from one of these businesses or organizations Kick Off event features an overview of the outings scheduled for the year The schedule usually consists of fishing at local lakes or rivers once a month starting in April and continuing through October The Annual Fishing Derby is held in August and is sponsored by the Townships of Maine and Wauconda

Fishing Outings feature a continental breakfast bait prizes for the largest and most fish caught and lunch The price is $1500 per person People who do not want to fish can come but they will pay the same amount Participants must use their own transporta-tion (we will provide maps) We do offer carpooling Transportation is not included in the cost

Fishing Derby - Once a year we hold a fishing derby in memory of a local business owner who enjoyed fishing and was very sup-portive of our efforts Proceeds from the event are donated to two charities--the local food pantry and the re-stocking of the lake On the day of the derby fishing is ONLY on boatshellipNO SHORE FISHING Volunteer captains with their boats are recruited and seniors are assigned to these boats They fish from 800 am to 1200 noon All fish caught are released--per agreement with the village This past year we had 26 seniors on 6 boats and caught a total of 105 fish We even have our elected officials and staff serving as captains and first mates Trophies and prizes are given at the end of the event including one for the captain that catches the most fish Hooked on Fishing Banquet - At the end of the season we hold a banquet at the local Elks Club that offers a fish fry Together with a great meal we give out annual awards to those seniors who caught the most fish the largest fish and even a booby prize for the person

who may have had no luck at all What Irsquove learned and experienced in doing this Camaraderie is evident at every outing Everyone cheers for and supports all the other fishermen Sharing ndash Fishing gives people the opportunity to share and reminisce with others in a relaxed atmos-phere

OAK PARK TOWNSHIP

ldquoSPREADrdquo is a book that is the result

of an innovative Intergenerational

effort to preserve the ldquoMemories and

Storiesrdquo told by the folks that visit the

Oak Park Township Senior Services

lunch program Under the guidance of

Professor Jim Duignan several DePaul

College students along with two local

Oak Park and River Forest High

School students made these stories

come to life and live forever

Below a statement written by Celeste Duignan Lunch Program

Manager for Oak Park Townshiprsquos Congregate and Home Deliv-

ered Meal Programs

Senior Lunch Program Share Memories in a Collaborative Book

ldquoFor six months Artist and DePaul University Professor Jim Dui-

gnan sat listened and audio taped the memories and stories of

lunch program participants The final draft of which was released

in May The book titled ldquoSPREADrdquo is a container for remarkable

stories and images and ensures that these memories do not fade

away It captures a written account of the lunch program patrons

who beyond having lunch come to talk play cards and socialize

These stories are of war local neighborhoods and of loss There

are impressions of their lifelong friends and family members

infused with beautiful and painful mo-

ments that reach back to the beginning of

the 20th century The big war from the

middle of the 20th century has marked

almost everyonersquos life in some way Con-

tributors shared their influences and im-

ages from planting victory gardens to re-

calling the exquisite details of overseas

missions from inside B-24 bombers This

book could have been about World War II

but the stories of and from home paint

similar stories of yearning fear love and sacrifice There are

stories of school and places long gone memories of being at Hull

House and knowing the people there They spoke of open spaces

prairies and trolley rides lost department stories and the gradual

change of Oak Park on every front The solid ground of friend-

ships and the warmth of strangers of honesty and hard work

became the most important quality of reflecting on friends and

commitments It is the measure of this wonderful generation

This project is a cooperative effort between the Oak Park Town-

ship Senior Lunch Program Stockyard Institute and the many

guests and collaborators at the lunch program A special thank

you to Sam Phelan and Mary Grace Detmer OPRFHS(Oak Park

and River Forest High School) students who volunteered to trans-

late audio tape to written wordrdquo

Fishing Derby - Once a year we hold a fishing derby in memory of a local business owner who enjoyed fishing and was very sup-portive of our efforts Proceeds from the event are donated to two charities--the local food pantry and the re-stocking of the lake On the day of the derby fishing is ONLY on boatshellipNO SHORE FISHING Volunteer captains with their boats are recruited and seniors are assigned to these boats They fish from 800 am to 1200 noon All fish caught are released--per agreement with the village This past year we had 26 seniors on 6 boats and caught a total of 105 fish We even have our elected officials and staff serving as captains and first mates Trophies and prizes are given at the end of the event including one for the captain that catches the most fish Hooked on Fishing Banquet - At the end of the season we hold a banquet at the local Elks Club that offers a fish fry Together with a great meal we give out annual awards to those seniors who caught the most fish the largest fish and even a booby prize for the person

who may have had no luck at all What Irsquove learned and experienced in doing this Camaraderie is evident at every outing Everyone cheers for and supports all the other fishermen Sharing ndash Fishing gives people the opportunity to share and reminisce with others in a relaxed atmos-phere

financial awareness seminars health screenings cooking classes yoga and even tai chi Of

course our center hosts weekly card games BINGO and mah jongg but it also offers line dancing

and Zumba Gold

Our center is very welcoming and encourages people to sit and relax while listening to music working a puzzle browsing through

magazines or visiting with others The township is delighted at the amount of new seniors that have joined Ela ldquo55 Plusrdquo since it

opened its doors to the new center February 1 2012 several hundred new memberships have been opened

Many of Ela ldquo55 Plusrdquo activities take place outside the brick and mortar of the community center Our members

take monthly day trips that include theater tours of cities sporting events and musical and historic shows Re-

cently wersquove added long distance trips over 90 seniors traveled to Cape Cod this past October We have several

more trips planned

churches

dinner dancing and live entertainment Last year over 320 people attended For many of our residents it is the only holiday gather-

ing they will attend Our goal is to have every guest leaving with a smile a small gift and the spirit of the season
