Once the holidays are over, my mind focus-es on the upcoming New Year and achieve-ments I'd like to begin planning for. As theadministrator, all accomplishments and goalsreached are completed as a team. In order torealize a goal as a group the team must be ofone mind focused on the same goal. I amblessed to work with a great team of executivestaff and department managers. As I considerthese new goals to achieve, I have reflected onsomething that I've been reading lately aboutachievement or right destiny. In order to reach our right destiny, one

must have right character; in order to haveright character, one must have right habits. Inorder to have right habits, one must have rightactions and in order to have right actions, onemust have right thoughts. It's similar to thethoughts of retired U.S. Navy Admiral WilliamCraven, who wrote a short book entitled “MakeYour Bed, Small Actions That Can ChangeYour Life and Change the World.” It's the small positive actions that impact

those around us and create more positive out-comes. That's exactly why we recognized andhonor the Impact Award winner at the end ofevery year. Reverend David Hall was the 2019recipient for the numerous ways that heimpacts the lives of the Veterans that we serve. We also continue to make small steps

towards future development to our campus. Most recent is the abatement of asbestos fromthe vacant buildings that will soon be demol-ished. The abatement began in mid-Decemberand will go through January before completion.Unfortunately, this necessary step will causeus to permanently close the R.E. “Hap”Northern Guest House. Earlier in December,we sent letters to the families of our residentsinforming them of the closure which will take

place on January 5, 2020. We have been refer-ring families to the Blessing Hospitality Houseand area hotels. We recognize this inconven-ience, but it's a necessary consequence of theprogression to new facilities for our Veterans. The next phase of our progression is the

selection of the contractor team vying for thelargest State construction project in the stateof Illinois. Teams of electricians, mechanicalengineers, carpenters and architects have cometogether and partnered with each other fromChicago to St. Louis in order to put forth a pro-posal for this project. One of our residents anda community member will serve on the selec-tion committee that will select the contractorteam. The team will be finalized by April 24,2020.Small steps in the right direction is our

hope for each one of you and our veterans inthis project as we enter the new year. Weencourage you to have right thoughts, produc-ing right actions, producing right habits, pro-ducing right character, in order to see yourright destiny in 2020!Happy New Year!

As 2019 winds down, I wantto say thank you to all of our vol-unteers, organizations, donorsand activity staff for making theyear a fantastic one! Volunteershave totaled over 16,900 hoursassisting our residents - that’sjust in 2019! Wow! We couldn’tfunction without all you! Thereare so many opportunities tovolunteer and you have outdoneyourselves this year! If it wasjust an hour or coming in week-ly/monthly - we appreciate allthat you have done.

I also want to say thank youto our volunteer drivers, MarkReichert, Roger Schwengel andHarold Tipton for making arecord year for outings! Fromall the Christmas light tours, tobreakfast/lunch and suppertrips, baseball games, Wal-martshopping trips, special eventsand just rides to get off the unit,we have done over 95 trips justin 2019. That’s more trips thanwe have done in the last threeyears combined!

The Elks Lodge #100 inQuincy has also outdone them-selves with another awesomeevent to support our veterans. They received a grant to helppurchase St. Louis Cardinalgame tickets and we took 10 res-idents, along with volunteersand staff to a game inSeptember. Despite being aChicago Cubs fan, this was aGREAT trip to St. Louis to seethe Cardinals beat the

Nationals! The Elks Lodge paidfor the tickets, along with extracash to use at the game for food& souvenirs, the best sack lunchever, snacks for the trip thereand back and provided shadedseats for the game. The tripwent over so well that they planto do it again next year! I can’tbelieve I’m saying this but, GoCardinals!

This year marked the 20thyear of the Annual EndlessSummer Car Show sponsored bythe local car club, Tri-StateLugnuts. Each year, the carshow is on the 2nd Sunday inSeptember at the VeteransHome and all money raised isdonated to the activity fund.Thank you to Charlie Ledbetter,President of the club and to allthe Lugnuts club members formaking a historical event of sur-passing the $100,000 goal in 20years of hosting the car show. They raised $6,405.61 this yearmaking the total $102,405.61raised for the activity fund. (Seea picture of their donation onthe back cover.) We couldn’t bemore honored to be a part of thisfantastic event! Over 200 clas-sic cars on display and a won-derful day for residents to seeand reminisce about them.

If you’re interested in volun-teering at the Veterans Home, please give me a call (I can bereached at 217-222-8641, ext.386) and we’ll sign you up! It’seasy - just complete a volunteer

application (it’s simple and onlytakes a couple of minutes). Wehave openings for assistance inthe Welcome Corner (free thriftstore for our residents), helpingon the units with general activi-ties (bingo, trivia, exercise, spe-cial events, or one to one visits),escorting residents to doctor’sappointments (we provide thetransportation), escorting resi-dents to appointments at ourown multi therapy building(Wednesdays only) and helpingpush residents in wheelchairs tospecial events at our auditoriumat Lippincott Hall.

Last but not least, I want toremind all families and friendsthat we have an email addressat the library to send notes toyour loved ones. This is a greatway for residents to keep upwith families and friends. Youcan send a quick note to sayhello, send your Christmas let-ter to them or just send photosto share with them. All youhave to do is send the email to:[email protected] put in the subject line theresident’s name. The librarianprints the email and sends it tothe unit for the resident to read. It’s so easy!

Wishing all of you a MerryChristmas and a Happy NewYear!

This may come acrosss as cheesy, but I think you’re grate...

Christmas is over, and as2019 draws to a close we lookforward to not only a new yearbut a new decade. It’s that timeof year when many people makeNew Year’s resolutions. Somepeople make healthful resolu-tions like resolving to eat health-ier, exercise more, or to stopsmoking. Some people makepersonal resolutions like resolv-ing to be kinder and gentler, orto spend less and save moremoney. Resolutions are greatand no matter what your resolu-tion for 2020 may be, I wish youall the best in your attempts tomake yourself a better person. There is certainly nothing wrongwith wanting to be a better per-son.

There’s only one problemwith resolutions, they usuallydon’t last. Oh sure, maybe a fewof us will actually have enoughresolve within us to see our reso-lution through to this time nextyear. And the good news is thateven if we do eventually fail tokeep our resolution at somepoint in 2020, at least we willhave made a little progress. Ok,so maybe I only lose 25 poundsinstead of my goal of 50 pounds.Maybe you lose your temper onlyonce in 2020 instead of once amonth or once a week. Maybeyou cut down to smoking just onecigarette per day instead of apack each day. At least we’llmake a little progress and that’sa good thing.

But the fact of the matter is

not that we need better resolu-tions. And it’s really not a mat-ter of making ourselves betterpeople. What we really need is anew life. The truth of the matterisn’t simply that we’ve formedbad habits. The truth of thematter is that we sin. The Biblesays every one of us is a sinner.Even the best of us has sinned atsome time or another. A lot ofpeople seem to get really uncom-fortable at that word “sin” but allit really means is that we’velived our life our own wayinstead of God’s way.

And the problem with sin isthat it separates us from God.When we are separated fromGod in our life, that is not a goodplace to be. Eventually sin sepa-rates us from God for eternity, and that is even worse. Thisleaves all of us with a problem, how do we re-connect with God?Many people will simply try tostop sinning, as if it were simplya New Year’s resolution. Theythink, “if my sin separated mefrom God, then I’ll just stop sin-ning and that will bring me backinto God’s good graces.” That’s anice thought, but it doesn’t workthat way.

First of all, like most NewYear’s resolutions, we probablywon’t get very far into the NewYear before our resolve crumblesand we’ve broken our resolutionto stop sinning. Secondly, evenif we do somehow manage tokeep from sinning for a littlewhile, that won’t “make up” for

the sin that we’ve already com-mitted in the past. This wholecondition of sin is much worsethan we ever imagined. So howcan we ever have a relationshipwith God?

Lucky for us, God wants tohave a relationship with us, andHe loves us enough to make away for us. That is why He sentJesus Christ. Jesus is the onlyway for us to know God. WhenJesus died on the cross He paidthe penalty for ALL of our sin.He did what we could not do, nomatter how resolved we may be.And when He came back to lifeHe proved that He is the ONLYONE who can pay for our sin. Soreally what we need is not a NewYear’s resolution, what we needis a new life which only comesfrom Jesus Christ.

So how do we get this newlife? It’s simple, we just ask forit. It’s as simple as A B C:A - Admit that you are a sinner.B - Believe that Jesus paid foryour sin.C - Commit to living your lifeGod’s way instead of your own.

Now that is simple, but it isnot easy. It’s not easy because itmeans that we give up the rightto live our life any way we see fit. It’s not easy because it totallygoes against our human nature. It’s not easy because we want tobe in control, instead of God.But it’s the only way to have aNew Life. So it is a simpleprocess even though it may behard to do. But trust me it’sworth it.

I would encourage you togive control of your life to JesusChrist today, for the New Yearand every day from here to eter-nity. Don’t just start a new yearor a new decade, instead begin anew life which only comes fromJesus Christ.

Thanks to all for the wonder-ful welcome you’ve given to mehere at IVHQ in my first threeplus months! I am praying thatthis Christmastide is one ofpeace and joy for you and allthose you love.

In my own “reminiscing,” I’dlike to take you back with me tenyears ago to my first-ever tripoutside the U.S. (not countingNiagara Falls). In December of2009, I got a passport and wentto Rome to spend the last days ofAdvent and Christmas at theVatican. I had just begun myfourth year of seminary, was 24years old, and wanted to go visittwo of my best friends who hadjust been sent to Rome for a five-year study program by theArchbishop of St. Louis. Soinstead of remaining in St. Louis,as I was doing, to get my Mastersdegrees, my friends Chris andCharlie were sent to study at theAmerican seminary in Rome, thePontifical North AmericanCollege, which is about a tenminute walk directly south of thePapal Basilica of St. Peters at theVatican. (Since then, they’veboth been ordained priests – in2013 – and have been asked tocomplete Doctorates, boththrough universities in Rome, which are nearing completionnow, 10 years later after firstgoing there.) Incidentally, someof you may know Quincy-nativeFr. Peter Harman who is cur-rently living at and is in charge(the Rector) of the Pontifical

North American College. It is ahuge honor for our Diocese ofSpringfield to have one of ourpriests be chosen to lead theAmerican seminary in Rome, with well over 200 students fromplaces all over the nation study-ing there.

At any rate, in 2009, I was onan airplane for just the fifth timein my life, flying 8 hours andmany time zones east to Italy for12 days I will never forget. It wastruly the best Christmas I’ve everhad, and I’ve been blessed withsome wonderful ones and a greatfamily. I knew that Christmaswould be planned out for me forthe rest of my life once I becamea priest, so I took this opportuni-ty to spend one Christmas inRome! We saw over 50 churches, including the churches built onthe final resting places of theapostles St. Paul, St. Peter, St..Phillip & St. James, the earlymartyrs St. Stephen, St.Lawrence, St. Clement, St.Ignatius of Antioch, and so manymore who shed their blood forfaith in Jesus Christ rather thanworship false pagan gods. Thefinal resting places of the youngvirgin martyrs St. Cecilia and St.Agnes were also incredibly mov-ing.

Midnight Christmas Masswith Pope Benedict XVI was abeautiful experience of prayerwith thousands of other peoplefrom all over the world inside St.Peter’s. At least eight languageswere used at various points in

the Mass, and the sound of thou-sands singing together of thebirth of Our Lord was unforget-table. This was the year a personjumped a barricade and tried totackle Pope Benedict during theentrance procession and therewas a 10-minute delay as securi-ty took her away and made surethe Holy Father was alright andgave medical assistance to aCardinal from France who took adirect hit from the aggressor. Myfriends and I didn’t see any of itbecause we were directly behindthe main altar and couldn’t seeup the aisle – so I thought it wasjust a really long procession withtypical Italian delays and com-motion – we were there and werethe last to know what happened!(We were filled in around 2:00a.m. back at the seminary… Didyou see the Pope get knockeddown? Wait. What?) The reasonwe were back by the SistineChapel Choir for Midnight Masswas that there is a group of rowsof seminarians that stand byoverhead microphones and madethe responses for Mass (generallyin Latin) and that would be the“sound of the congregation” com-ing through on TV – on NBC’sbroadcast, for example. Thelager-than-life Nativity scene inSt. Peter’s square was beautiful, and it remained up for the tradi-tional 40 days of Christmas untilFebruary 2nd. (This is why you’llsee some Catholics like me notdecorate until right beforeChristmas and then keep trees, lights, nativity scenes, etc., up forall 40 days until February 2nd,while our culture celebrates forabout 40 days ahead of time andthen sadly tosses everything outon Dec. 26th!)

But the reason I wanted torecall this trip was because of amoving experience I had onChristmas Eve. Many items

GOD BLESS THESE SPECIAL MEN AND WOMEN, OUR COMRADES...

from the Holy Land have beenrescued through the centuriesand brought to Rome. One ofthose things are the stairs ofPontius Pilate’s Praetorium fromJerusalem. 28 stairs that Jesus, scourged and bloodied, Himselfwalked upon the day he died forus. The holy stairs (Scala sancta)are 28 well-worn steps that pil-grims for centuries have climbedon their knees from bottom to topwhile meditating on Jesus’sPassion and Death for us on

Good Friday. Our Lord’s ownblood was on these stairs. Youmight think that Good Friday isnot what you’d want to thinkabout on Christmas Eve. Thatwas actually my initial reactionto Chris when he asked if weshould go to that part of Rome onthe 24th. However, it was a pow-erful and moving experience toconnect the reason we celebrateChrist’s birth. He became manfor us, as a little child, just as weall came into this world, for the

purpose of saving us from oursins and eternal death by HisPassion, Death, andResurrection. The wood of themanger and the wood of theCross are indeed connected. Werejoice that the Savior has finallycome; we rejoice that heaven ispossible; and we remember thesacrifice of God’s only Son thatdestroyed the power of sin anddeath on Calvary. I pray thissame profound gratitude movesyour hearts this Christmas.

WISH LISTIf you or your organization are interested in funding a portion or an entire project, simply contactAdministrator Troy Culbertson at (217) 222-8641, ext. #202 or Director of Marketing RickGengenbacher at ext. #380. All contributions, no matter the size, will be noted in the Bugle withthe Wish List. These items will remain on the list until we have received enough funds to purchasethem. New items will be added from time to time. (Checks should be made payable to the IllinoisVeterans Home . Please write the name of the project you wish to adopt in the memo note.) THISLIST IS IN PRIORITY ORDER. As always, thank you for your time and consideration.

NEW WISH LIST ITEM...REQUESTED: 32” - 36” HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISIONSREASON: Residents’ room space is tight and having the television mounted on the wall, will create more spa-

cious room for residents to enjoy. Our project goal is to have a television mounted in every roomat Hammond Hall (77) and Fifer (50). So far, 50% of Hammond Hall is completed. 32” - 36”HDTVs have worked the best for this project.

PRICE: $100 each, Need approximately 80 televisions - Total cost for project is approximately $8,000.

REQUESTED: ACTIVITY CALENDAR FOR UNITSREASON: After decades of use, wear and tear, it is time to replace the Activity Calendars on the units with

not only something that is easier to read and use but compliments the homelike environment westrive to create throughout the grounds. These attractive activity calendars are 47-5/ 8"H x 66-1/ 4"W and feature one daily insert for each day of the month. These inserts are designed to accom-modate a standard letter-size piece of paper folded in half meaning the end of the handwritten dryerase board we now have!

PRICE: $2,033 each (Markword, Fifer and Hammond are all seeking one.)

NEW WISH LIST ITEM (AGAIN)...REQUESTED: VIRTUAL REALITY PROGRAMREASON: In early 2019 we were able to purchase eight virtual reality (or VR) headsets and two tablets so

this item was taken off the Wish List. This activity has been such a hit, we would now like to pur-chase four more headsets and one more tablet. As a reminder, VR is a technology that has beenpromised for decades. Now it’s available to regular consumers via a range of devices that providea 360-degree simulation that can allow users to feel like they are at the zoo, swim with the fish, roam the streets of Rome or literally thousands of other experiences. Residents feel like they arein that specific environment and with 4 headsets, residents can experience a “trip” together andcreate socialization and friendship. One final note about this program - we have found VR is verypopular with residents who have macular degeneration or those with dementia.

PRICE: Total cost is $5,500.

NEW WISH LIST ITEM...REQUESTED: SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM MACHINEREASON: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! As you can imagine, ice cream is popular at

IVHQ. Whether it is an ice cream social or an added bonus to an activity, this delicious treat isenjoyed by all and makes everyone happy. We would like to purchase one machine, see how itgoes and perhaps add another or two if everything goes as well as hoped.

PRICE: $5,000 is an approximate cost.

REQUESTED:HOMELIKE ENVIRONMENT PROJECTREASON: Living environments influence quality of life and many studies have been done regarding the

impact the environment around us has on our health; physical, and emotional well-being. Suchthings as wall coverings/color, window coverings, lighting, and wall art influence us whether werealize it or not. These things help humanize healthcare environments and can make a settingmore reminiscent of home; that’s our goal with this endeavor, to create a more homelike environ-ment for our residents. We have made great progress on this front but it is ongoing and one of theitems we would like to add next are a few Nordic chairs.

PRICE: ONGOING FUND -- Donations of all sizes are appreciated.

REQUESTED: BLACK CURTAINS FOR THE STAGE IN LIPPINCOTT HALLREASON: The curtains on the stage in Lippincott have literally disintegrated and desperately need to be
