It is no secret that a graduate degree’s value can be reflected in the bearer’s higher income or the likelihood that

she or he is better positioned for ad-vancement opportunities. Yet experts in Hawaii’s graduate programs agree there is much more value to a master’s degree than increased earnings and upward mo-bility. Michael Fassiotto, assistant to the pro-vost for graduate studies at Chaminade University sees four primary reasons for pursuing a master’s degree: marketabil-ity, earning potential, widening one’s per-spective and personal fulfillment. Research by the Graduate Manage-ment Admission Council, indicates that well over half of part-time (57 percent), full-time (69 percent) and executive (66 percent) MBA alumni reported being extremely or very satisfied with their in-creased earning power. According to GMAC, satisfaction with greater career options afforded by an advanced degree is high, ranging from 75 percent, 80 percent and 87 percent for part-time, full-time and executive MBA alumni respectively. GMAC reports that not only students, but organizations that support them also benefit from advanced degrees with com-panies gaining return on their initial MBA

sponsorship investment in 17 months on average. “With a four-year degree now consid-ered a standard norm, a master’s degree makes you more competitive,” says Lisa Parker, interim graduate program chair-woman at Argosy University. “A graduate level degree has both eco-nomic and social value and that’s some-thing no one can take away from you,” Parker says. Along with a higher skill set and greater self-esteem, a master’s degree can help position students and professionals for future work as a consultant or faculty member, Parker notes, quipping, “The worst thing that can happen is that you get an education.” Chaminade’s Fassiotto observes that many pursue a master’s degree to im-prove their lives or change careers, but

confesses another consideration is simply because it’s fun. “You say to yourself, ‘Gosh, I’m really doing something,’” Fassiotto says. For older students (the average age of a graduate student at Chaminade is 32), taking on a master’s program is seen as the gateway to career advancement, but Fassiotto says one should not lose sight of how a master’s degree allows a person to think and look at things differently. “The value of a master’s degree can be judged, in part, by how much it allows one to become a better thinker,” Fassiotto says, adding, “an MBA, or any master’s program, is going to broaden your scope and teach you to deal with problems in a multi-dimensional way.” Increased technical knowledge, a bet-ter grasp of one’s field and an expanded perspective all make a master’s so much

more than just a degree, Fassiotto says. It is this exposure to new concepts and the chance to break out of traditional functional boundaries that accompany a master’s degree that Charles Steilen, dean of Hawaii Pacific University’s Col-lege of Business Administration, sees as an asset. “In our executive MBA program, a student may be seated next to 20 other people from very different industries, but they are all going through the program together,” Steilen says. That exposure to people and ideas rooted in seemingly completely unrelated backgrounds often reveals that they do, in fact, have a great deal in common. Steilen adds that integration and exe-cution are critical to successful MBA pro-grams and that greater emphasis is being put on application through, among other things, live case studies that he believes will benefit both the business community and the graduate students. At the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Shidler College of Business, the focus is on international business, earning the school ranking among the nation’s top 25 colleges for international business, ac-cording to Shidler College of Business graduate program Director of Marketing Cindy Hsu.

Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) offers the ideal balance of leading busi-ness and management theory, modern computer technology, and opportuni-ties for practical application. Through core courses, concentration options, electives, two capstone courses, and an optional internship, graduate students gain a solid foundation in modern business and management principles. Whether you are a seasoned profes-sional or a recent graduate, HPU offers a variety of different MBA formats that meet your individual needs.

Executive MBA The new Executive MBA program at Hawai‘i Pacific University is designed for business professionals interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will move their organi-zation forward. In addition to building upon skills such as problem solving, leadership and strategic thinking, this innovative program teaches participants how to directly impact their company’s bottom line. Students are taught how to increase revenue, better manage costs, and increase productivity by working on real business scenarios, rather than

the typical case studies other MBA programs may utilize. The program trains professionals to look beyond the problem – to see the big picture. Topics dealing with how to bring about organizational change and new ways of looking at business problems form the core of the program. Courses are structured to create a learning environment that offers students a chance to identify realistic oppor-tunities for local companies, create realistic plans for maximizing the opportunities, and receive feedback not just from professors, but company CEOs. The MBA program at HPU, Hawai‘i’s only Executive MBA of-fered in an 18-month accelerated weekend format, encourages students to apply real-world solutions to real-world problems.

Flex MBA Hawai‘i Pacific University offers another option for aspiring nontradi-tional MBA students who have busy personal and professional lives. HPU’s Flex MBA provides a tailor-made for-mat for students who need flexibility in pursuing an MBA degree. The Flex MBA allows students to switch be-tween full-time and part-time study, attend evening, day, or weekend class-es, or take online courses. Flex MBA students meet with a personal advisor to plan their schedule and arrange a convenient payment plan. Students also have a choice of seven start dates throughout the year.

12-Month MBA The 12-month MBA is designed for full-time students who have completed an undergraduate business degree or have satisfied the necessary business prerequisites at an accredited college or university. The program consists of 42 semester hours of full-time study with a fall entry only. The student’s graduate education is divided into four terms (fall, winter, spring, and summer) and offers a distinctive combination of theory and practice. Students are pro-vided with multiple opportunities for study across a variety of fundamental

areas. Concentrations are not avail-able in this 12-month MBA program, instead, 9 semester hours of electives are required that will enable students to tailor the curriculum to address specific long-term career goals.

Full-Time MBA HPU’s full-time MBA program is an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a dynamic learning environment for two exciting years. The 24-month format is ideal for students without a business degree, because it allows time for students to complete all the necessary prerequisites and then make a seamless transition into the MBA program. Students pos-sessing all the required prerequisites can actually shorten the program to just 18 months.

Hawai‘i Pacific University: MBA Options For Your Individual Needs

“A graduate degree enhances career mobility as it trains individuals to be-come future CEOs and CFOs who are able to manage many different facets of business,” Hsu said. With the ever-accelerating rate of change in an increasingly high-tech global economy, Hsu argues more com-panies want employees to be cross-functional and have an MBA. Hsu agrees that a master’s program is so much more than what is learned in the classroom. She points to the op-portunity to network on par with other highly motivated people, citing ex-amples of students who start up a new business with classmates they met at grad school. As the only school in Hawaii ac-credited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, Shidler College of Business offers Japan- and China-focused MBA programs as well as a Vietnam-focused executive MBA program. In response to increased demand for graduate degrees in the Asian-Pacific

Rim, Shidler will begin to offer new programs this fall (a full-time China international MBA and a U.S. interna-tional MBA for Chinese nationals).

“Here at UH and Shidler, we see ourselves as a bridge and crossroads between Asia and the West,” Hsu said. With enrollment in its MBA programs

up 16 percent from the previous year and further anticipated growth, Hsu sees greater interest in Shidler’s varied MBA programs as proof of the thirst for advanced education and recognition of a master degree’s value. And just as professional growth and greater opportunities cannot be ignored, neither can the value of self-enrichment and the curiosity about the world that is fueled by graduate studies, says Steven Reid, dean at Wayland Baptist Univer-sity Hawaii. “The real aim and value of a mas-ter’s degree is gaining new options and learning what people from different backgrounds think,” Reid says. Reid also indicates high value in the small class size of graduate pro-grams (Wayland classes average 12-15 students) that allow for more di-rect interaction between instructors and students. “Possessing a master’s degree in any field shows a certain maturity and so-phistication along with the desire to im-prove oneself,” Reid says, “and that is what opens doors.”

Good Business for Hawai‘i...and You.

The business world is constantly evolving, and successful management involves keeping abreast of trends and demands. Chaminade University is preparing graduates to meet these demands. “So many of our students are also business professionals,” notes Scott Schroeder, Dean of the School of Business. “We keep that in mind as we shape our MBA programs. Courses are designed to address the corporate realities executives face today and prepare them for leadership roles. And our programs are structured to accommodate our students’ busy lives.” Four different concentrations of study—Leadership, Accounting, Not-for-Profit management, and Public Sector management—give students a way to tailor their education to meet their career objectives. Admission dates and class schedules provide convenience and flexibility. And courses are leading-edge, some of them completely unique to Hawai‘i.

Tune to Career Growth One of the more distinctive program offerings is Chaminade’s Accounting MBA. “Accounting today offers an expanding job market and rising salaries—a smart career choice,” says Schroeder. Students can simultaneously earn their degree and fulfill the academic requirements for the CPA examination. The Chaminade MBA is the only program in Hawai‘i to offer a complimentary CPA review course for its students. Also unique to Hawai‘i are the Not-for-Profit and Public Sector MBA concentrations. These programs are opening doors—and minds—to new

business concepts. Moya Gray, Executive Director of Volunteer Legal Services Hawai‘i, says, “Having been a director in both the public and the non-profit sectors, I really value the skills that Not-for-Profit and Public Sector MBAs bring to the table. Because the non-profit sector in Hawai‘i is experi-encing rapid growth, organizations such as ours want to hire people with the full component of non-profit skills and a strong sense of social

responsibility that will take our company to the next level of performance.”

Convenience and Success Through evening course offerings, convenient quarterly enrollment, and small class sizes, led by professors with real-world connections and experience, Chaminade is making it easier than ever for professionals to pursue their MBA without putting their careers or their lives on hold. Chaminade graduates hold management or executive positions in virtually every industry in Hawai‘i. Ask Chuck Kelley, President of Outrigger International Travel. “The program’s flexibility made it possible for me to work toward my MBA while maintaining a demanding career and raising my kids,” says Kelley. “Chaminade delivers the right combination of business knowledge and management skills needed to move your career ahead.”
