Come explore the other side of Sunday SchoolAttention middle school students At 9 a.m. Sept. 13 there will be a Sunday School Class designed just for you. Do you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that YOU belong to God? Well, you do. You are a continuation of a story — God’s story that started thousands and thousands of years ago. We are going to explore what it means to be a part of His story. This is the journey we will take together this fall semester. Expect the unexpected and prepare yourself for a fun time of learning to-gether. We will meet in the youth room downstairs, unless all of you show up. If all of you show up … well, you will have to wait and see what I do! If you need a ride let me know, 785-844-0115. Did I mention there will be donuts? Beginning in January we will offer a Communicants Class at First Presbyte-rian. We will invite the ninth graders and anyone else who might like to under-stand what it means to be a member of this church family. Come find out why it is important to become a member of a church. You are experiencing the age of independence; make God a part of your independence. See you Sept. 13. Sheryl Wohler n

Hello high school studentsWe have not forgotten you. We will resume meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 13 every Sunday at Bill and Terri Hollenbeck’s house, 4510 North Highway 99, Wamego, The get-togethers are very informal and include food, fun and fire — a camp-fire that is. n

Hey there, adults During the 9 a.m. Sunday School hour, there are several options for you. The High School students are invited to join the Adult Bible Class on Sun-day mornings to continue with its reading of the Gospel according to Luke. Ev-eryone is welcome. The class is currently up to Luke’s account of the start of Je-sus’ ministry in Chapter 5. Knowledge of the Bible is not required to participate. This is a terrific Sunday School Class taught by Dave Hancock. The class takes its time and covers each passage as if we were reading it for the first time in our lives. Dave Hancock’s teaching style doesn’t pretend he knows the “an-swer” when there are multiple ways to interpret a passage. No one tells anyone what to believe. What matters for purposes of the class is to learn, to the best of our ability, what the words on the page actually say. We meet in the Conference Room in the basement. The coffee pot is always on. We are encouraging those eager for a more informal gathering to come to Fellowship Hall during the same time. The coffee pot there is also always on and the Sunday morning newspapers will be available. The conversation and care for one another are always a welcome start to a hectic week. See you at 9 a.m. Sundays. n

You are invited to the churchwide breakfast to celebrate the new Sunday School Year The 2015/2016 Children’s Christian Education year will kick-off at 9 a.m. Sun-day, Sept. 13 with a churchwide breakfast in Fellowship Hall. Everyone is invited.

We will begin our opening in Fellowship Hall for the churchwide breakfast served by the deacons. We’ll then move down-stairs for a short time together. We will meet in one of the classrooms at the end of the hallway. All of the adult volunteers will be invited for this first class time to be in-troduced to our children and their families.

Our curriculum, “Growing in Grace & Gratitude,” comes from the Presbyterian

Church USA. Teachers will be given all the materials needed for each class, with the lessons, crafts, snacks, etc. for each Sunday prepared in advance so teachers will not have to do that.

Because there will be an unknown number of participants, all children will meet together in one classroom. The committee will continuously monitor how this class style works. If we need to break the class into two classes — kindergar-ten and under and first grade to fifth grade — because of class size, or difficulty in presenting the lesson, then we will divide the classes.

For children age three and under, parents are encouraged to be with their child. Parents may opt to be in the adult Sunday School class.

We have some great adult volunteers to help lead this new class, but are cur-rently looking for more adults to teach. A sign-up clipboard is available in the Narthex. We need two class leaders each Sunday.

If you are interested in being on the Children’s Christian Education commit-tee, our next meeting will be Sunday, Oct. 11, immediately following worship in Fellowship Hall. You don’t have to teach to be on this committee.

For more information, call the church office at 456-2556, or talk to Laura Fails or Lorinda Sultzer. n

News from the Pews

Last year, our church was involved with a cooperative program with Wamego High School. This program involves high school students who are working to develop job skills. Coordinated through the high school with Cristi Wiegers, Bob and Lorinda Sultzer work with three, sometimes four, high school students each week in our church along with their para. It has proven to be a worth-while program, and the students were great. Our church will benefit from this cooperative program again this school year. n

Love Never FailsVBS Summer Day Camp

by Lorinda Sultzer

This year, we tried something different. Instead of Vacation Bible School, we had a Day Camp, complete with water games, morning watch, Bible study, silly camp songs, crafts, story time, great food and snacks, afternoon worship and so much more. This was not VBS, but an actual full-day Day Camp at our church and, we did not charge campers to attend. Because of the generosity of our church members for their food donations for snack times, and the funds from Hollyfest, the meals did not add any additional cost.

Our success was largely due to the many dedicated volunteers from our church with a genuine heart for children. Our theme this year was “Love Never Fails.” We had 38 children, ages 4 to 12, registered for Day Camp, and had 36 at-tend. We served around 440 nutritious snacks and prepared 230 lunches during the week. On the last day of camp, the campers made their own s’mores.

Counselors who joined us from Heartland Camps in Parkville, MO were MacKenzie Marchant (lead counselor), Emy Blake, Caleb Orr and Megan Ander-son. The four counselors “camped” in our church during the week.

Volunteers from our church were the Kitchen Crew and Snack Prep team: Brenda Patterson, Dora Morris, Betty Bretz, BJ Kerr, DeAnn Savaloja, Callie Hildeb-rand, Evelyn Webb, Laura Fails and Sarah Porey. Other volunteers were Shirley Walker, Devin Ulrich, Brook Ulrich and Lizzie Allenbrand.

Camp counselors from our church were Reade Wohler, Skylar Ritter, Alex MacKenzie, Rana Kelty McAlpine, Adam Patterson, DeAnn Savaloja, Lorinda and Bob Sultzer.

Alex MacKenzie not only assisted with a group each day, but read at least three stories after lunch to the campers. A 15’x15’ tent pitched in the center of Fellowship Hall provided a camp-like atmosphere, complete with a rug and lots of pillows for campers to lay down and relax for story time. DeAnn Savaloja also helped throughout the day wherever needed. Bob Sultzer not only helped with all games and activity set-ups, he stepped in to provide assistance to each group wherever needed throughout the day. He also came back every evening to make sure the church was clean and ready for the next day. The Camp Coordinator was Lorinda Sultzer.

Thank you to our dinner hosts Dave and Sarah Hancock, Gary and Cheryl Seitz who hosted a dinner for the Heartland counselors in their homes, and Bill and Terri Hollenbeck who hosted a pizza and pool party for the Heartland coun-selors and our middle school and high school students.

Activities and games included: Fort Building, Blob Tag, Four Square in the Air, Thirsty Hippos, Sand Castles, Team Volleyball, Shaving Cream Wars, Group Serve, Archery/Sling Shot, Heart Hunt, Daniel and The Lion’s Den Game, Called Cere-mony, Water Slide and Water Slide Bowling, and more. Some of the lessons were even taught in the tents in the sanctuary, because, well, it was day camp!

Many parents of the campers expressed their appreciation for providing such a well rounded program, and were all especially thankful that their children slept very well each evening and couldn’t wait to come back the next day.

It was a little stressful going into this program not knowing what to expect. It was a true day camp. This was a well put-together program through Heartland Camps. Together with the caring counselors from Heartland and the dedicated volunteers from our own church, the outreach our church provided to our youth and to the youth in our community was extremely valuable. Thank you for pro-viding this wonderful opportunity to so many. n
