Classroom Policies

Disclaimer: This syllabus has been constructed to be as complete as possible but I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures, and the syllabus as needed with notification to students. Please utilize the website regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there. Teaching policies and regulations for this course are not open for discussion or negotiation. How to proceed through the course: Students should plan to have three (3) hours of study time per week for each credit hour of class time. For example: when taking a typical three (3) credit hour course, students should plan to spend at least six to nine (6-9) hours per week doing coursework and studying for that course regardless of the mode of delivery (online, hybrid, face-to-face). This course is organized around MODULES. Students will read Microsoft Office 2016: Intermediate Series textbook and complete assigned exercises in each Module. Students will learn advanced features of Microsoft Office by reading and completing assignments in the textbook. The chapter assignments in each module are designed to develop thinking skills as well as information processing skills. The instructor will evaluate the chapter exercise assignments. Online component (Falcon Online class shell): You will find tabs to access key areas of the course. These include the Content, Grades, Discussions, Assignments, Quizzes, and Links tabs. Please login to Falcon Online and view the student orientation videos to learn how to use the online component of the class. The CONTENT tab is where you will find the following learning tools:

• Stored Syllabus — Save to your hard drive. Study it carefully. • Class Assignments and Work schedule with Due Dates – follow this carefully. • Student Guides and samples. • Study tools like PowerPoint presentations and links to outside sources

The GRADES Tab is where you will check on your progress. The DISCUSSIONS Tab is where you will submit your completed non-graded and graded discussions as well as to access embedded course support. Post your questions of a non-personal nature to your Instructor there.

The ASSIGNMENTS Tab is where you will upload your written assignment such as the Memo Report. The QUIZZES Tab is where you will be able to access your graded exams (and practice quizzes if available.) The LINKS Tab is where you will be able to access publisher supplemental study aids if available. How to submit assignments: All assignments must be submitted electronically in either the course Assignments, Discussion board or inside the publisher Website. Handling of assignments: The Class Schedule of Assignments is located under the Content tab inside the course. It will provide a work schedule for accomplishing the class reading and graded assignments in a timely manner and will foster your successful completion of the course. It will also contain task due dates where applicable. Assignments are completed using the Microsoft 2016 Office Suite. Students work through each assigned module exercise creating documents and ensuring accuracy. Documents are then uploaded to the Florida Online class shell using the Assignments dropbox. See Class Schedule at the end of this syllabus for details and deadlines. There are no Quizzes in this course. Discussion Forums: THE GRADED DISCUSSION FORUM contains one (1) topic. Your participation in this forum is necessary for you to receive ANY points for Discussion Participation. There will be a beginning date and ending date for the topic. You can post as many comments to the GRADED DISCUSSION FORUM as you wish during the range of dates each forum is open. You are required to read the postings of the other students. Your activity will be checked by the Instructor. Late submissions will not be awarded points. Post your responses as early as possible, monitor your postings, and respond to everyone who writes to you about your topic. Discussion to be completed in Falcon Online Course Shell: There will be one (1) graded discussion topic. You should contribute to the discussion topic within the dates for that particular discussion. Submissions posted on the Due Date will receive a 20 point deduction. The graded discussion topic will be posted in the “Discussion Forum” of the Falcon Online course shell. To access the discussion topics, click on the Discussions tab in the course shell. Points will be awarded based on the quality of your discussion, the results of your research on the topic, and your effectiveness in interacting with other students. You are required to read the postings of all other students. This will be checked by your Instructor. Students should also “reply” to the postings of two other students to discuss their views on the topics. Remember that the GRADED discussions take the place of classroom participation in a face-to-face classroom setting. So, please, devote sufficient time and effort to this important part of the course. Please review carefully Discussion Information and Grading Criteria: Graded Discussion (worth 100 points): Discussion Forums Find the discussion by clicking the Discussion tab. There are both graded and non-graded discussion forums. Please see associated graded discussion board for associated student learning outcomes. The Non-graded Discussions include the Self-Introduction for attendance purposes. They may also include embedded support centers like the Library and Writing Center. In fully online class there are Question and Answer boards where you can post questions to your Instructor or classmates. Go to the Graded Discussion area to see the topic to research and post. The Graded Discussion Forum contains one (1) topic. Your participation in this forum is necessary for you to receive ANY points for Discussion Participation. There will be a beginning date and ending date for the forum. You can post as many comments to the GRADED DISCUSSION FORUM as you wish during the range

of dates each forum is open. You are required to read the postings of the other students. Late submissions will not be awarded points as the discussion will close on the End Date/Due Date. Post your responses as early as possible, monitor your postings, and respond to everyone who writes to you about your topic. Discussions MAY NOT be recycled from another class and will earn NO points. General Pointers for Discussions: The quality of your discussion contribution is more important than the quantity of postings. However, one or two sentences written on a discussion topic is usually not sufficient to demonstrate active participation. It is suggested you try to avoid comments “straight from your text.” It is recommended that you use your text, other books, and comments from professionals in the field, and Internet research to supplement your posts. You must post your original discussion to unlock the ability to read and respond to classmates’ discussions. Make sure you read other learners’ posts. Try to add some “value” to the comments already posted. DO NOT POST SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN POSTED BY ANOTHER LEARNER. Communication: Students may expect responses to email within three (3) business days. Students may expect assignments grades within one (1) week after submission depending on class size and type of assignment. If the course is online, students should log into their course at least every 48 hours and should read Falcon Mail and/or communicate with the Instructor as needed. If there is an assigned graded online Discussion, then students are required to post in the Discussion boards. Always put the course number, OST 2713, on the subject line of an e-mail and your full name in the body of the message. Microsoft Office 365, with 1TB of OneDrive storage, is available to enrolled Daytona State College students. Students are provided a college email address that serves as the student’s official source for college communication. In addition to email, Office 365 provides students with shared calendars, the ability to create and edit documents online, team sites, and other collaboration tools. Whether you work on a PC, Mac, tablet or phone, you will have a consistent experience across all of your devices. The service includes online versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, and OneNote Class Notebook. For more information about Office 365, visit the Student Self-Service Help page at http://daytonastate.edu/help/ and click on Office 365 Find Out More. Interaction: For 100% online classes: Print the syllabus and keep beside your computer or in your notebook for easy access in order to follow the due dates. Students are expected to complete all assignments in a timely and consistent manner in order to learn office procedures and skills. Be sure to work on assignments every few days to stay current and not fall behind. Students are expected to politely post questions or comments to their Instructor or classmates. Please be courteous to your classmates when posting and replying in the Online Discussions.in the online discussions and/or student lounge to assist them in their learning success. Children/Non-Enrolled Individuals in Class: Individuals who are not registered in the course are not permitted in the class when in session. Attendance and Lateness Policy: Class engagement will be monitored. Access the courseroom at least every 72 hours. Late assignments will have points deducted. Once a quiz has closed, it will only be reopened at the end of the term according to the Class Schedule. In either an online or traditional class your attendance is expected. The Instructor may elect to penalize absences (lack of participation) in online classes. If the penalty is implemented, you will be notified by a posting inside of class and it will be reflected in your overall grade as:

Students who no longer want to attend class: 1. Must withdraw by the deadline for the semester (published in the academic calendar). 2. May initiate the withdrawal process at any Falcon Center location or online. 3. Students with extenuating circumstances (i.e.: hospitalized, out of town, etc.) may withdraw by mail provided the request is postmarked by the deadline and contains an original signature of the student, or with an email from the FalconMail account. 4. Students are permitted a maximum of two withdrawals per course. Upon the third attempt, students will not be permitted to withdraw and will receive a grade other than "W" for that course. 5. A student who stops attending class and does not withdraw before the last day to withdraw will receive a grade of “FN” (F for non-attendance) when the grades are submitted. The last date of attendance will be noted and a student who receives the “F for non-attendance” grade for all classes will be subject to the federal Title IV refund guidelines. For more information about the refund that will be required, please see the Financial Aid section of this catalog. Attendance: Students who stop attending this class will be withdrawn from the class and receive a final grade of W1 (Withdrawn). Attendance includes participating in online or face-to-face environments as required. Late Work/Make-up Work and Exams: There is no additional assigned makeup work since students must proceed through each module in order to build their office procedures skills. All deadlines will be strictly enforced, absent extraordinary circumstances as determined solely by your Instructor. Graded Discussions replace face-to-face classroom interaction so posting early, reading other posts, and not waiting until the last day earns greater points. Posting the last day or the last few hours is the equivalent of coming to a face-to-face class during the last 5 minutes and trying to interact when the class is almost over. Submissions posted on the Due Date will receive a 20 point deduction. Classroom Etiquette: We’ve asked the experts in Daytona State’s School of Student Life Skills to provide a few tips on how you can make the most of your time in college. Here’s what they had to say about your first week of classes, study strategies, general tips, and what not to do! https://www.daytonastate.edu/student_act/welcomebackstudents.html Evaluation/Assessment Methods: Students are assessed as they accomplish the course student learning outcomes through the skill building lessons and participation in the discussion forum. The main components of this class are: 1. Modules: Read the modules; it is recommended to complete the Practice Concepts Reviews at the end of each module; however, it is not required to complete the Practice Concepts Reviews. 2. Discussions. Post to the Discussion area. Remember that when posting to any medium, many writers follow the bulletin board rule: you should feel comfortable if your words were posted on a bulletin board. Your participation in this forum is necessary for you to receive any points for Discussion

Grades are based on a points system. The overall points are accumulated by completing all exams, discussion posts, the memo report, and earning a passing grade of 700 points or above. A grade of 699 points or below, earns a grade of D or F, which will be recorded. No Incomplete grades are given except under extreme extenuating circumstances. Instructor reserves the right to modify or change the syllabus to enhance student’s learning. No makeup assignments are given (see syllabus under Points per Task). Example: Grades are based on overall points accumulated by completing all assignments listed in the syllabus. In order to successfully complete the course with a grade C or higher, then:

Incomplete Grades: An incomplete grade will NOT be given UNLESS the following criteria are met: a) A request in writing is submitted to the Instructor prior to last three weeks of class, b) All assignments, term paper, and quizzes were completed at that point in time, c) The student has a grade C or higher at that point in time. Policies for assigning incomplete grades must adhere to the College policy as stated in the catalog section, Grading System, in effect at the time the section is offered.

"I"- Incomplete - A temporary grade issued only when a student who is passing the course but who, for valid and unforeseen reasons, is not able to complete the course requirements before the middle of the next major semester. Student agrees with the instructor to complete the requirements before the middle of the next major semester. "I" grades automatically convert to "F" grades if the requirements

are not met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the deadline as published in the College catalog.

Class Schedule: There are a total of six (6) assigned modules listed under the Class Schedule of Assignments. Each module contains specific assignments to work through. You build skills and knowledge as you work through the pages of the textbook ultimately building the assignment file you will submit for a grade. Student data files are located under the CONTENT Tab. Before beginning assignments, save the data files at a location of your choice. As you work through the text, you will become more familiar with the content of the ribbons, menus, and other requirements in the instructions. Follow the Class Schedule of Assignments closely for the specific assignments to complete, and the assignments to be read for understanding and to enhance skills. It is recommended to keep a copy of the syllabus handy to check off each assignment and module as you complete it. Be patient with yourself-work through each page of the textbook methodically saving the file as you complete each step. If you find that the instructions are not working correctly that may just mean that a step was skipped, which is easy to do. You might try backing up a few steps or restart the assignment. This is a skills building class in which you will be building your software skills weekly. It is important to work consistently each day to complete lessons. Submission of Lessons: See the schedule below for the page number and instruction number of the file to be submitted to the Assignments Dropbox. For example, when you reach the page numbers and instructions indicated on the Class Schedule of Assignments, you should save the file on a flash drive or computer. Upon completion of a Module, the file(s) will be uploaded to the Assignments Dropbox in your class shell.

Student Rights & Responsibilities Students are responsible for reading and following all college policies outlined in the current Student Handbook. Some of the most important are summarized below. The Handbook can be accessed at http://www.daytonastate.edu/academics.html under “Student Resources.” Academic Integrity In order to preserve academic excellence and integrity, the College expects you to know, understand, and comply with the Academic Integrity Policy, which prohibits academic dishonesty in any form, including, but not limited to, cheating and plagiarism. The grades you earn must be based upon your own work and must accurately reflect your own knowledge and skills. An instructor who finds that a student has violated Academic Integrity may apply an academic consequence ranging from a zero percent for the assignment, up to and including failure for the entire course. Violations may be reported to the academic department chair for review and/or referred to the student disciplinary process for appropriate disciplinary resolution. For more information about Academic Integrity and the appeal process see: https://www.daytonastate.edu/academicintegrity/ Honor Pledge: I, as a member of the DSC community, pledge that I will neither give nor receive unauthorized aid in my work nor will I present another’s work as my own, nor will I tolerate anyone who does. For more information on academic integrity, view the Honor Code. Forms of Academic Dishonesty are clearly defined on the Academic Integrity webpage. Academic Dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, online, fabrication, and other academic forms of misconduct. A score of zero % for the assignment will be posted if work is found to have been submitted under any form of Academic Dishonesty. Self-Plagiarism: When faculty assigns papers and projects, they intend such projects to contribute to a student’s learning in the course. A student who submits a similar paper written for another course last year is choosing not to take part in that learning activity. While she may not be “stealing” work from someone else, she is opting out of the work assigned for this course. Submitting your prior papers or submitting the same paper for two different courses is therefore called “self-plagiarism.” Students may, of course, refer to their own previous work, as long as they properly cite and document it. You should always seek permission from your instructor if you intend to re-cycle, submit, or even revise any paper from another course. A grade of Zero % for that assignment will be given in cases of self-plagiarism such as that given to students who choose not to complete an assigned task.
