"Master Roland," by William M. Chase, which is reproduced as a frontispiece to this number of ART AND PROGRESS, is one of the notable canvases shown in the Carnegie Institute's most recent International Exhibition, included in the exhibition sent out on a museum circuit by the American Federation of Arts. It is a portrait of the painter's son in Eton costume, and may be ranked with the portraits by Mr. Chase in the permanent collections of our leading art mu seums, such as the "Lady in Black," "Lady in Pink" and the "Lady with a White Shawl," all of which are, in truth, superbly painted. There is delightful vivacity in this portrait, as well as sparkling color, and interesting contrasts of light and shade. Mr. Chase is unquestionably a master of the art of paint ing. His treatment of still-life subjects is inimitable. Indeed, it is hard to say whether this painter has

made his largest contribution in the field of art through his own productions or through his leader ship as a teacher, for in both directions the service he has rendered is both of extraordinary value and qual ity. William M. Chase was born in Indiana in 1849.

He studied in Indianapolis, New York and Munich. His present home and studio are in New York City.
