The portrait of Daniel Chester French by Robert Vonnoh, which is reproduced as a frontispiece to this number of ART AND PROGRESS, was painted last sum mer at "Chesterwood," the sculptor's country place near Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It represents him in his studio and as pausing for a moment from his

work. He is seated on the steps of a movable plat form and has in his hand a lump of modeling clay. This portrait,- which was shown first in the National Academy of Design's recent annual exhibition and is now in the International Exhibition held by the Carnegie Institute, has a double interest represent ing the work of a distinguished painter and portray ing a no less eminent sculptor. Mr. Vonnolh was born in Hartfcrd, Connecticut, in 1858 and studied art first in Boston, then in Paris. His art is firmly founded upon tradition vet it is essentially in the spirit of the time. He has made a specialty of por traits, but his landscapes and figure paintings also have distinction. Mr. French's birthplace was Exeter, New Hampshire. He, too, studied first in Boston, but then in New York and finally in Florence. Among the sculptors of America he holds today foremost rank. His works have not only beauty of form and conception, but great dignity and intellectual quality of the highest order. To the art of the present day Mr. French has made splendid contribution. Among the best known of his many distinguished works are the Martin Milmore memorial, "Death and the Sculp tor," at Boston; "The Minute Man," at Concord,

Massachusetts; the Gallaudet memorial at Washing ton; Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska; "Alma

Mater," Columbia University, New York; the Park man memorial, Boston; General Devens, an eques trian statue in Worcester, Massachusetts, and groups for the Custom House, New York, the Federal Build ing, Cleveland, and the State Capitol of Minnesota.
