The triptych for the altar of the Lady Chapel of the new Chapel of the Intercession erected in Trinity Cemetery, New York, which is reproduced as a frontispiece to this number of ART AND PROGRESS, is of unique interest. The subj ect for the three painted panels, by Taber Sears, is "The Adoration of the Magi." The Kings bearing gifts are seen on either side of the Christ child. In the panel to the right, Joseph is pictured kneeling. In the dis tance a procession approaches bearing gifts. Within the landscape appears a Gothic Castle, a great ilex tree and steep cliffs. The entire composition follows the arrangement of the late Gothic and Flemish altar piece paintings, showing a fusion of Gothic with Oriental forms. The color is rich and brilliant, bright saffron yellow contrasts with black, the costumes are strong reds and blues with elaborate patternings. The rich architectural setting was designed by Bertram G. Goodhue, architect for the church. It is of wood, carved and painted, after the medieval manner. The lowest stage contains shields bearing emblems of the

Virgin, with two angels bearing emblems of St. Joseph. Over the central panel projects a canopy, and this is surmounted by a crowned shield borne by angels and supporting the pelican-emblem of the Holy Eucharist. The topmost stage of the side panels contains, be sides flowers and fruit, emblems of the Passion. This altar piece is a revival in the right direction, giving an idea of the profusion of color and deco ration which filled the churches of past ages.
