MaintenanceGENERAL

1. Empty basket of clippings periodically to preventspilling.

2. After each mowing session, clean clippings out ofbasket, off reel and all other surfaces to preventcorrosion.

3. Inspect reel and bearing surfaces for foreign materialthat might prevent reel from rotating freely and cleanas necessary.

4. Follow engine manufacturers recommendationscarefully to prolong engine life.

LUBRICATION

There are Zerk Grease fittings (17, Fig. B) on eachend of the reel and on each Roller Adjuster (18, Fig. C).Use a lithium base type grease at these locations every 8hours of operation. Use a light machine oil at all pivotpoints every 30 hours of operation.

AdjustmentsCONTROLS

Adjustment of control cables have been made atthe factory before shipment. If additional adjustment isneeded, move adjusting nuts at the machine end of thecables.

HEIGHT OF CUTCutting height should be preset by the dealer

according to ordering instructions prior to delivery. If achange in cutting height is required, the following proce-dure must be followed:

1. There are two positions available for the Rear RollerAssembly (19, Fig. A). The bearings for the rearroller shaft must be located in the lower position ifthe cutting height is over 1 and the upper position ifthe cutting height is 1 or less. Disassembly of therear roller assembly is necessary to change thebearing location. See Figure 4 for reference.

Reel blades are sharp! Never attempt toadjust cutting height of reel to bed knifewhile the engine is running.

2. Adjust cutting height by loosening the top andbottom Adjusting Nuts (20, Fig. C) which hold rolleradjusters for the Front Roller (21, Fig. B). It isimportant to get roller adjusted the same height oneach end so that there will be uniform cutting theentire width of the mower. Do not adjust by sight.

3. After loosening adjusting nuts on each side, place aboard or gauge plate of the desired height under bedknife back bar and then tighten nuts.

REEL TO BED KNIFEThe Reel Adjustment Bolt (22, Fig. C) regulates the

distance from the bed knife. To reduce the distance, turnthe locking hex nut on each side of the reel up. Proceedslowly and do not over adjust. Turn about 1/8 of a turn tostart with. Do not get the reel so tight that it is hard toturn by hand. A too tight reel will cause excessive wear. The reel should wipe or lightly touch the bed knife.Check to see that the blades are cutting the paper allthe way across. Tighten lock nuts.

Use heavy gloves and be carefulbladesare sharp.

REEL END PLAY ADJUSTMENT

As the reel is used, normal wear of the reel bearingswill cause end play. This condition could cause unevenwear to moving parts and uneven cutting of turf.

Test for end play periodically by trying to move thereel from side to side in the frame. If there is any move-ment, adjust by loosening the lock nut (23, Fig. B) on theadjustment bolt, located inside the right end of the reel.Turn adjustment bolt in one half turn or less. Do not overtighten as this will cause excessive bearing wear. Testagain for end play. If reel is rotating freely and no endplay can be detected, retighten the lock nut on theadjusting bolt.

Backlapping gears areshown disengaged. The gears must be inthis position whenmowing.

Raise mower up until drive rollerclears the ground.

Backlapping gears are shownengaged. The gears must be inthis position when backlapping.

BacklappingBacklapping is a very important step in maintaining

sharp reel blades on the mower. This procedure shouldbe performed when the reel blades and bed knife becomeslightly rounded and the turf is not cut cleanly after aslight bed knife adjustment. Also, after grinding the bedknife and reel, backlapping should be done to establish aperfect match between the be knife and the reel blades. The reel must run in a reverse direction to be backlapped.

1. Make sure to adjust the reel to the bed knife so thatthe reel is level with the bed knife and light contactis maintained.

2. Remove the Right Side Guard (24, Fig. A).3. Raise the mower up off the ground until the rear

roller clears the ground as shown in Figure D.4. Loosen Hex Nut (25, Fig. C) on the back lap

assembly, pivot assembly rearward and tighten hexnut as shown in Figure D.

5. Start engine and run at half throttle. Engage driveclutch.

6. With reel running, apply lapping compound to thereel with a 2 or 3 brush. Apply compound evenly tothe moving blades.

Be extremely careful not to let the brush, yourfingers or your clothing get caught in the reel.Use approved safety glasses and gloves toprotect you from flying particles and abrasives.

Many types of compounds are available for lapping. We recommend a good pre-mixed water soluble com-pound. Pre-mixed compound saves time required to mix, eliminates abrasive waste, rinses off with water and isavailable In all grit ranges from course to fine.

7. Stop the reel and examine both the bed knife andreel blades to see that the cutting edges uniformlysharp. If not, gradually tighten reel adjuster bolts(see Reel To Bed Knife Adjustment) and thenrepeat Step 6 above until achieving the propersharpness.

8. Rinse off the compound thoroughly with water toremove all abrasive.

9. Loosen the hex nut on the backlap assembly andpivot assembly forward to disengage rear roller.Tighten nut in the position shown in Figure E.

10. Lower machine to the ground and replace right sideguard.
