Few things can fuel a fury quicker than the sight of a certain rectangular object braced between the windshield and wiper of your vehicle. it comes in a distinct shade of chicago orange and flutters in the wind, almost mocking you from a distance as you approach. it’s the dreaded parking ticket! and we’ve all been there. most of us utter a few choice words under our breath as we snatch the note off our dash and inspect its contents, only to find that we did in fact miss the faded sign four blocks back warning us of street cleaning the first tuesday of each month between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. after april 1st. and although we feel violated by the complexities of chicago street parking, we suck it up and pay. recently, a Bartlett man took a slightly different approach, which sparked my interest (and other senses) around this topic. early in april, after receiving a parking violation, he decided to show his disgust by wiping his posterior with the ticket and mailing it in to the village. now, i would have said the excrement smearing was alleged, since the man still awaits court in June, however he attached a friendly note explaining his actions. the unlucky village employee who opened the envelope complained of “brown stains and a foul odor”, according to police. the 22 year-old man was then arrested and released after posting a $500 bail. i can’t say that i didn’t laugh at his “south Park-esque” stand for democracy, but now the poop protester faces criminal disorderly conduct charges. large price to pay for a crappy joke! one thing that can certainly take your mind off the hassles of city living is alicia’s Keys recent concert in chicago. imaGe had the pleasure of attending the opening night of her north american tour and we have some exclusive pictures and news to share. she is one of today’s hottest artists and put on an awe-inspiring performance at the allstate arena in suburban rosemont last month. read up on our cover girl’s concert coverage on page 16. national coverage is great, but this month we are stacked with local flair. From can’t miss cabanas and rooftops to must-have styles and trends, there is something for every chicagoan behind these pages. We have also packed in some great health and beauty spreads as well as some chiseling fitness editorial to get you geared up for a strong spring. dive in and enjoy!

W hen alicia Keys kicked off her american tour at suburban chicagoland’s
allstate arena this spring, all eyes were on the entertainer to pull off a showstopping spectacle intermingled with a cavalcade of hits. as imaGe and everyone else in the house can attest to, the singer/songwriter/piano player didn’t just conquer the challenge, but she also proved why she’s one of today’s most accomplished r&B to pop crossover artists throughout the nearly two hour process. long before the headlining diva took the stage, arena audiences were introduced to the neo-soul stylings of melanie Fiona, a 26-year-old canadian singer who’s hoping to follow in Keys’ footsteps. though her opening act status meant only a brief performance, it was evident the newcomer could balance the sweet and sensual, while warming up the masses who arrived early for the marathon evening. From there, the already established robin thicke made his way into the spotlight, looking dapper in his suit and sunglasses, while unleashing an unquenchable libido on the adoring audience. Performing tunes from 2009’s sex therapy, the blue-eyed soul heartthrob had all the women swooning and the fellas wishing they were half as fly. For anyone who still needed some prepping for the main performer, thicke and his brass-smacked band more than delivered, aptly paving the way for Keys and her extensive entourage. after the anticipation mounted to such a sizzling degree that the spacious arena almost exploded, the leading lady finally appeared to shrieks of delight as the entrancing beats of “caged Bird” blasted
throughout the carnivorous sound system. and she didn’t just sing the song in the standard format, but rather acted out the poetic piece of romantic roulette from an actual cage surrounded by dancers, mounds of mood enhancing smoke, and plenty of attention-commanding strobe lights. From there, she spent the evening’s remainder switching between center stage and a seat behind her keyboard, introducing a myriad of emotions to the captive audience and inviting them to share in the journey of hope and pain, plus plenty of introspection and eventual resolution. though the tour is continuing in other cities this spring and summer boasting rave reviews wherever it goes, it may be awhile before Keys returns to the Windy city to bare her soul with such intimate abandon. however, fans need not fear because the dozen time Grammy award winner, mtv and Bet staple and radio dominator still has four cds to choose from. the cds span the entire 2000s thus far, assuring there’s still plenty to load in the iPod to guide personal sing-a-longs at the turn of a dial. of course, the trick will be ordering the playlist between her shimmering piano ballads, pulsating club romps, and occasional hip-hop experiments, but no matter what the undertone, there’s always an uncanny cohesion to her expositions. though by no means definitive, here’s a suggested list of the top ten tunes the singer/songwriter has recorded throughout her career that have already blasted past the 30 million album sales mark—many of which were performed in chicago—and will no doubt endure throughout the ages.

10. “iF i was your woman/walk on By”/ oFF 2003’s
“the Diary oF alicia keys”this song is a medley that Keys didn’t personally write, but one she adapts with originality and ingenuity. in addition to introducing Gladys Knight and the Pips’ “if i Were your Woman” and isaac hayes’ arrangement of “Walk on By” to younger audiences, this pairing once again shows Keys translating her influences to present tense.
9. “teenage love aFFair”/ oFF 2007’s “as i am”
With an old school club groove crossed, this upbeat narrative is sure to invoke some sunshine into a dreary day. aside from joyously celebrating the innocence of falling in love for the first time, there’s so much enthusiasm in Keys’ inflection that the track could rekindle some interest from a previously tapering flare.
8. “karma”/ oFF 2003’s “the Diary oF alicia keys”
these hip-hop grinds are sure to fill up a dance floor within seconds, while Keys instills the old adage that what goes around comes around. in other words, when a lover walks away for an illegitimate reason, be prepared to have that luck dumped right back on the person sometime down the line.
7. “try sleePing with a Broken heart” / oFF 2009’s
“the element oF FreeDom”introduced by meaty beats and haunting keyboards, this track finds Keys encouraging listeners to rise about their circumstances, particularly in light
of a break-up. though it’s a painful process, she eventually finds a way to overcome the grief and move forward, remembering only the positive moments and discarding all the baggage.
6. “a woman’s worth”/ oFF 2001’s “songs
in a minor”one of Keys’ most notable anthems of female empowerment is also amongst her most infectious, thanks to its retro soul scratches and classy supper club vibe. there’s also plenty of confidence within Keys’ romantic cooing, which is a testament to her ability to walk the talk as a self-assured woman.
5. “like you’ll never see me again”/ oFF 2007’s “as i am”
the superstar’s never been shy about her affinity for Prince, and while this song is just loosely reminiscent of the supreme symbol’s “Purple rain” in structure, it mirrors that classic’s epic escalation. it also marks one of Keys’ most passionate vocal performances to date, which earns some extra action from her pleading background accompanists.
4. “you Don’t know my name”/ oFF 2003’s “the
Diary oF alicia keys”Boasting her affinity for the 1970s, this track could’ve very well come from the tail end of the original motown era had it not been for the cell phone references used throughout. adapting the persona of a waitress, Keys meets “a fly guy” who she eventually asks on a date, even though she’s technically not supposed to mix business with pleasure.
Top 10 Alicia Keys Songs
3. “Doesn’t mean anything”/ oFF 2009’s “the element
oF FreeDom”one of her most personal tunes to date is a musical continuation of “no one,” though it finds Keys’ stepping up the songwriting notch to poignantly contrast a life loaded with riches to someone in the midst of heartbreak. after running through a list of dreams and monetary accomplishments, the song’s character realizes they don’t provide fulfillment, especially if they come at the expense of letting a loved one slip through their fingers.
2. “Fallin’”/ oFF 2001’s “songs in a minor”
not only was this Keys’ breakthrough song thanks to its sultry, neo-soul shuffle, but its lyrics can be applied to countless complicated relationships. as the title implies, Keys sings of both falling in love and falling out of love with the same person, but repeating the cycle several times through their time together. it may not provide specific resolution, but it sure is relatable to anyone who ever rode that roller coaster.
1. “no one”/ oFF 2007’s “as i am”
the chart topping monster hit is impossible not to memorize after a single listen, so it’s no wonder why the current tour’s set list has this tune positioned as the grand finale. though understated with stripped back band accompaniment over gentle piano strokes, the chorus is instantly magnetic and empathetic for anyone looking for a heartfelt way to pledge their affections to a flame.

C hicago is world-renowned for its architecture, cultural attractions, culinary delights,
entertainment options…and fickle weather. so, it’s no surprise that on those rare sunny days and starry nights, chicagoans flock to outdoor destinations to savor a cocktail, enjoy a bite to eat, soak up some fresh air with friends, or meet new ones. When it comes to beer gardens, patios, sidewalk cafés, terraces, and rooftop decks, the second city is second to none. But not all alfresco options are created equal. virtually any establishment can throw a few tables on the sidewalk and call it a café. only a select few rise above, offering their guests a polished, upscale setting that is every bit the equal of their interior spaces. For this list, which is by no means all-inclusive, we’ve selected 10 unique places that offer their guests an elevated outdoor experience. some in terms of altitude, but all in terms of attitude, amenities, and service. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a serene location to enjoy a drink, or a place to party the night away, we have an option, or two, for you. Picking the best of the best is simply not possible, so the following are listed alphabetically.
citizenWhatever the temperature, citizen’s hip, urban outdoor space is sure to be one of the hottest places in town. spanning 5,000 square feet across a side patio and rooftop deck, citizen features two outdoor service bars, covered and uncovered seating, a dedicated sound system, and more flat-screens than many indoor sports bars. daily food and drink specials, a straight-forward menu featuring several excellent thin crust pizzas, and a high-energy, friendly staff create a laid-back, party atmosphere. this attracts an equally exuberant crowd from the neighborhood and often keeps “happy hour” rocking until last call.
seating is abundant, but call ahead to reserve a prime people-watching table.

although the Film "spread" may not have done so hot at the box office, its leading man ashton Kutcher sported some bulletproof ensembles. those ensembles paved the way for an entire line of what to wear when marching through life in style. think beach bum mixed with venice beach edge. Pull that together with a little hollywood flare and get in line for high profile combat. too far from all that l.a. influence, you say? look no further than chicago's lake michigan shores to nab this hard-bodied look. gooD thing school lets out soon, as the book worms, computer geeks, and future rulers of the fashion world will be busting out of their cooped up studious shells. Whether you’re ditching the pencils and binder, or letting the briefcase and laptop collect dust while you relax, there’s no need to change your polished “nerd” look. this season those collared shirts, cardigans, and oxford kicks are turning serious style pages in the books on what to wear. For the gentleman of this genre, keep your v-neck sweater in close proximity with its counterpart button down under shirt, and accompanying ironed khakis. these serious threads don’t necessarily project a stuffy pocket protector of a personality, but rather exude confidence and brains full of classic sartorial knowledge.

Don’t worry gals, this nerd surge is not gender specific. lift your horn-rimmed frames and take a peek…these days it’s all about the school girl within getting her over due vindication. Please don’t confuse this with that bubble gum popping, knee-high sporting lassie, that worked the first time she heard “hit me baby one more time.” We’re talking about the matured version of her, sans pigtails and plaid all over. reach for a printed cardigan to go with high-waist pants and patent leather-laced shoes. you’ll be the bell of the debate club ball, for sure!

I t was a glamorous evening at the fabulous, modernistic martini Park entertainment lounge. thirty beautiful models representing Factor Women modeling agency
(formerly elite) wore fashion from chicago's iKram Boutique. in hair and makeup done by a huge team from artists by timothy Priano, the models walked the special runway in front of a video produced, directed, and edited by the talented and gorgeous Kasia Koniar. all of the guests were gifted with a goody bag filled with beauty products provided by Glossed and Found magazine in addition to lush products and $50 gift certificates from vivid seats. a dozen top photographers, videographers, and televison reporters captured the event for the news. the attendees had a wonderful time with many of the lustrous guests that included designers, artists, entrepreneurs, second city style editor carol callaci, former winner of america's next top model/lake Forest resident mcKey sullivan as well as four other antm contestants, and the editor of today's chicago Woman, sherren leigh.

I f i had a dollar for every time a fan, gym member, or friend asked me how many crunches i do to get
six-pack abs or what the best exercise is to get a flat stomach, i would have a hay day shopping at my favorite store, nordstrom! i am going to share with you the brutal truth on how to get the flat, tight stomach you’ve always wanted. Why listen to me, you ask?
Well for starters, my abs have been featured in national fitness magazine ads, international websites, and on infomercials nationwide promoting various fitness products. so, it’s safe to say i know a thing or two about how to trim and tone the waistline to get ripped! are you guilty of hitting up every ab machine in your gym and still not seeing results? is your dvd rack full of ab workout videos? do you think only using those tv ab gizmo gadgets is going to get you the best middle section ever? Well, what i'm about to say may throw ya for a loop...i rarely, if ever, do crunches! once a week i teach a full body weight class where i incorporate core exercises (core meaning 29 muscles, not just your rectus abdominal sheath). i’m not saying you shouldn’t do any crunches. What i’m saying is that if you think doing hundreds of crunches everyday will get you a six-pack, you’re sol! First off chicagoans, to get that tummy you have always dreamed of, nutrition is crucial. Watching what you feed those abs will either make you look like you have them or like you really did
swallow a six-pack! so yes, diet is more important than how many hours you spend on the treadmill or how often you pick up dumbbells. i will tell you that all three of these together will give you optimal results, but 75% of losing belly fat has to do with what you have in your fridge. as you continue to read on, you will probably want to tell me to go fly a kite. all i’m here to do is
educate you. only you have the power to make the necessary lifestyle changes to achieve chiseled abs. remember, if you continue to do the same thing you will get the same results. let’s see how your current food choices stack up and what changes you need to implement to get you closer to that summer body. sugar is the enemy—bread, pasta, cereals, ketchup, alcohol, and more— just about everything you buy at the supermarket contains it. i call this the enemy, but you probably consider this your bff. sugar has no nutritional value whatsoever and it ends up hanging around in your body right where you don’t want it...your thighs, butt, muffin top, and hip area. Fuel your body with the nutrients your body needs. next time you hit up your local grocer read labels to steer clear of the bad guys like high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, or maltose. there are plenty of healthier options out there, like choosing brown rice instead of white rice, ezekial or hemp bread instead of white or wheat breads, oatmeal over sugary boxed cereal,
RemembeR, if you continue to do the same thing you will get the same Results.

day? i guarantee you have no clue. not to discount you in any way, but this is typical of 95% of the people i meet. on average, 20 grams of
protein at every meal is essential, such as: eggs, turkey, chicken, beef, fish, legumes, tofu, protein shakes,
and more. so, when you read a food’s nutrition label, make sure you look at protein, too. timing is imperative as well; pre- and post-workout nutrition is necessary as well as eating 5-6 meals a day every 3-4 hours. eating several small nutritious and well-balanced meals throughout the day keeps your metabolism in high gear which will help to trim
your waistline. eating 1-3 meals a day actually slows your metabolism down, meaning you’ll hang onto every calorie you ingest instead of becoming a lean fat burning machine. Plan and prepare ahead of time to ensure you have the right food choices for your meals and snacks set out for the day. cardio and resistance training combined will help to burn fat, stubborn potbelly fat included.
cardio is not king...steel is! cardio is acute; it burns fat during the time you are exercising and a few hours after, it also works your heart, a very important muscle. Full body weight training burns fat 24/7! you still need both, but just make sure you don’t skip out on the resistance part. i have been weight training for over 17 years and weights changed the shape of my body, not cardio. i eat and clean 95% of the time, lift weights 5-6 times a week and teach cardio classes 1-4 times a week. you need both! if you already got this part mastered then all you need to do is work on the nutrition aspect to get dialed in. so let’s get to work people! let me end with this note, be efficient when performing any abdominal

exercises. i cringe when i see members in the gym with bad form, using momentum or doing stuff that looks plain goofy! teaching my clients to engage their core effectively can take weeks or months, so be patient. oftentimes when doing a crunch, most recruit their hip flexors instead of their rectus abdominal sheath. no more wrenching on your neck, unless your chiro is super cute. Focus on isolating your abdominal wall when doing a traditional crunch or reverse crunch. once your hip flexors kick in, the exercise becomes a waste of time. this means that doing a partial crunch or movement is more effective than a full sit-up. make sense? try Pilates, especially on the reformer. not only is it an awesome full body workout, but it will also target and tighten your core in ways like never before. With summer right around the corner and pool season in four weeks, it’s “crunch” time. so try cleaning up your eating habits as well as using some of the other mentioned tips. if you are consistent with following a sound nutrition and exercise plan, i guarantee you’ll gain that boost of self-esteem so you can flash your abs with confidence on the beach, at a street fest, or in the gym. veggies instead of chips or pretzels, salsa instead of ketchup, or wine instead of beer. Believe it or not, when i go out in the chi i usually drink water and still have a blast. it’s actually quite entertaining watching a bunch of drunk fools! i don’t expect any of you to do as i do and i know that establishments that serve liquor won’t want to hear this either, but this is one of the many truths about getting your summer six-pack. next, how much protein are you getting daily and how many times a

in many resPects, sustainable design and the creation of healthy, healing environments should not be seen as a new phenomenon. its origins date back longer than a millennium and can be found in the imperative set forth in the hippocratic oath calling on physicians to “first, do no harm.” creating environments that promote healing complements the development and practice of treatments that heal. yet, hospitals historically have not been among the healthiest environments in terms of decor. the old expression, "you never get a second chance to make a good first impression" applies to health care facilities as well. the facility conveys a message to patients, visitors, and staff. the facility also communicates a torrent of clues about the organization and the medical care being provided there. the facility also influences employee service attitudes and behaviors.

COllInS deSIgnS preSentS:
Finishes, signage, and artwork must be carefully selected, well coordinated, and integrated. security can be balanced with some softening features while conveying a message of safety. thoughtful design can help ensure that the proper first impression is created and sustained. Flexibility must be a basic feature of any new health care facility to keep it from rapid obsolescence in the face of changing needs and technologies. health care facility needs are evolving rapidly, and the direction of that evolution is difficult to forecast. today’s patient is looking for an experience that plays on the idea of “escapism.” it is becoming less common for healthcare spaces to be designed exclusively for procedure or business. thus, every hospitality facility needs to address treatment and business requirements while still providing a degree of comfort and avoiding further traumatic experience.

more and more, we are finding healthcare facilities and waiting rooms with a spa-like atmosphere. it is becoming an absolute necessity. shapes, colors, textures, and lighting must be carefully selected for comfort and practicality in order to create a good first impression and leave an everlasting impact.
