Heart of a ChampionIn the heart of Randleman is a tribute to the city’s

favorite son.

The Richard Petty Museum is filled with memorabilia

that depicts the racing career of the legendary NASCAR

Winston Cup champion. There are several cars, trophies

and awards that honor the seven-time series champ.

One of the cars on exhibit is the one Petty drove during

the 200th and final win of his Cup career.

There is also a Goody’s Mini-Theater on site that

shows The History of NASCAR several times daily.

Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $3 students

and free for kids under 6.

Racing to DinnerThe owners of Snyder Farms Restaurant are not only fans of

food, they are also fans of NASCAR.

For that reason, the popular eatery on Beckerdite Road in Sophia

is loaded with racing memorabilia that goes back as far as when

the sport first started in the late 1940s. Owners Wayne and Betty

Snyder are especially devoted racing fans of hometown favorite

Richard Petty, and have hundreds of pieces of NASCAR

memorabilia related to King Richard.

Oh, and besides the racing atmosphere, Snyder Farms is known

for its tasty, down-home-style meals.

Air of DistinctionThe plane truth is that Asheboro

is home to the North Carolina

Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame.

The two-hangar museum is on

the grounds of Asheboro Municipal

Airport, with 15 vintage planes

on display for the public to see.

The aircrafts date from World War

II through the Vietnam era, and

almost all of the planes can still fly.

Some of the models include

a C-45, Cessna L-19 Bird Dog,

Flitfire, Stearman and a Swiss P3.

There is also a display of authentic

military uniforms, medals and

historic artifacts, and guided

tours are available.

Long Life SpanThere are only two remaining

covered bridges in North Carolina, and one of them is in Randolph County.

The Pisgah Covered Bridge was constructed in 1911 at a cost of $40, and it still spans the west fork of the Little River. The one-lane bridge eventually became obsolete as car traffic increased over the years, but today it remains a tourist attraction for pedestrians.

A flood washed the bridge away in 2003, but it was rebuilt the next year with about 90 percent of the materials from the original structure. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Strike a PoseDowntown Asheboro is graced

with several works of art.

The Downtown Development

Committee is in charge of bringing

in eight sculptures each year to display

around the district. The committee

solicits the business community for

funding to lease the works each year

from artists, and then brings in eight

new pieces the next year to swap out.

The artwork leases for $500 to $750

per piece, and 2008 is the third year

for the project. The city of Asheboro

also assists by pouring the concrete

bases where the sculptures sit, and

secures the artwork to the pedestals.

R obbie Anderson, a sophomore at Asheboro High School, may have done his research project on the ostrich, but he certainly

isn’t sticking his head in the sand when it comes to educational opportunities.

Anderson is one of 93 young scholars who spend much of their academic day on the grounds of the North Carolina Zoo.

“When I first heard of it, I didn’t really know much about it. It was interesting to hear it was science-based, because that’s

what I love,” Anderson recalls. “After the first week, I knew this would be something I would really like and something that fits my personality.” Anderson describes himself as a “hands-on” learner, and that’s what the Asheboro Zoo School is all about. “School, I believe, is a time for learning, and whichever way you’re going to learn best is what’s most important,” he says.

The Asheboro City Schools’ Zoo School, only the fourth of its kind in the country, opened on Aug. 27, 2007. Its student body is made up of 10th- through 12th-graders interested in taking a walk on the wild side. To accommodate the innovative program, the school system erected a freestanding facility with four classrooms, a general meeting room, offices and lab space on property donated by the zoo. Four teachers handle the instruction in science, social studies, English and math, and all have developed curricula – with the help of education profession-als at the zoo – that integrate science principles and zoo operations.

“There are a multitude of careers represented there,” says Carla Freemyer, public information officer for Asheboro

City Schools. “We like to refer to it as having a 1,500-acre laboratory. Students do spend a lot of time out in the park for experiments. The teaching is different – not as much lecture as it is project-based, working in teams. Even English is taught with a bit of a science slant.”

Asheboro High School operates on a block schedule, with students attending four classes a day in 1.5-hour blocks After half the year, they switch to different classes, thus earning eight credits annually. Zoo School students attend first period at the high school, usually to pick up an elective such as band or a foreign language, and then most ride the bus the six miles to the zoo. They return to the high school campus at the end of the day to participate in after-school activities or head home.

“It’s certainly different to see those kids here during the school year instead of just in the summer,” acknowledges Rod Hackney, the zoo’s public relations manager. “We run into them constantly on the pathways. It’s very exciting to see kids at that age so involved in the natural world and concerned about the envi-

ronment and our wildlife.”The first American zoo designed

from its inception to present animals in their natural habitat, the North Carolina Zoo offers students as well as visitors a chance to glimpse a variety of animals in their native landscape and many times to see them interacting with animals of other species.

On April 4, 2008, the zoo will unveil its multi-exhibit Watani Grasslands Reserve, with some of the largest and most technologically advanced facilities in the zoo world for the exhibit and care of elephants and rhinoceros. The elephant exhibit will double in size to seven acres and will feature seven elephants, including Samantha, who arrived via truck in October 2007 from Canada’s Valley Zoo in Edmonton. Hackney says a new “immersion” walkway that extends more than 100 feet out into the elephant exhibit will give visitors – and Zoo School students – a closer look at Samantha and her pals. And that’s just the kind of education that Anderson says will bring him back to the Zoo School for his junior year.

A lot has changed since Cox’s Harley-Davidson first started in Asheboro more than 46 years ago. But one thing that remains constant is the family’s commitment to customer service.

Recil Cox started the business out of his garage in 1961. By day, he worked as a mechanic at a local mill. But every evening Recil would pursue his passion for “wrenching” – selling and repairing Harley-Davidson motorcycles, slowly building a full-time business that would eventually employ three generations of his family.

Recil and his wife, Betty, built the business from the ground up, with help from sons Jerry and Poochie. Tragically, Jerry died in 1973 following a motorcycle racing accident. Poochie Cox and his wife, Jan, became the sole owners of the dealership in 1997, marking the start of an era of tremendous growth. In fact, the business nearly doubled its size in 2000 and expanded its service department and warehouse space again in 2003.

Today, Cox’s Harley-Davidson is managed by Poochie’s son, Robbie, and is widely recognized as an award-winning destination dealership, with locations in Asheboro, Rock Hill, S.C., and Mansfield, Penn.

“My grandfather built this business on good service, and that’s what we’re known for,” says Stephen Cox, marketing and promotions manager for the dealership. “We’re a five-time winner of the Gold Bar & Shield Circle of Excellence Award – Harley-Davidson’s highest honor. We have customers from West Virginia that tow their bikes all the way to Asheboro for service. It’s a real family atmosphere, and once people come here, we want to make sure they come back.”

As part of that overall commitment to service, Stephen

established Cox’s Finance & Insurance in March 2003. “For years, we sent business to area agents,” says Cox, who

is president of the agency. “I realized that we had kind of a captive audience and wanted to take advantage of that. We started just as a service to motorcyclists, but soon customers were asking about their cars and homes. We’re now a full-service agency with over 2,500 clients.”

This type of convenience is just one reason local customers are so loyal, says Kim Markham, owner of Asheboro Recycling and a long-time customer of Cox’s Harley-Davidson.

“I grew up riding dirt bikes as a kid, and bought my first street bike about 10 years ago,” Markham says. “I knew just what I wanted and where to find it. As a local business owner, I believe in doing business locally. But the fact is that Cox’s does a great job – it’s the convenience of having everything you need right there. The staff is friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. There’s a high level of trust – they believe in building long-term relationships with their customers.”

Cox’s builds those relationships in other ways as well. For example, it’s a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. And Cox’s added a Riders’ Edge® course in 2006. Known as Harley-Davidson’s Academy of Motorcycling, the Riders’ Edge® program helps new motor cyclists learn to ride in a safe environment.

“The focus is on safety, but we also want to show people how much fun it is to ride,” Stephen Cox says. “The Riders’ Edge® course also has helped us reach new demographics. We’re seeing more and more women learning to ride, and we’ve had good results from this program. We’re always looking at new markets and new ways to grow the business – starting with customer service, of course.”

Cox’s Harley Davidson was voted the top dealership in the country for customer service in 2003. Above: Motorcycle fans have plenty of bikes to choose from in Cox’s showroom, which has doubled in size since mid-2000.

G-FORCE SUPPLIES SUNDAY DRIVERS

For years, Long’s Machine & Tool has been a reliable provider of drivelines – the system of differentials, drive shafts and other parts that help determine how fast a vehicle can run.

In 2005, officials at the Pennsylvania company decided to get a little closer to the action by opening G-Force South in Asheboro.

G-Force South assembles, sells, leases

and services the products made by Long’s Machine and Tool. The Asheboro location ensures a quick response to the needs of NASCAR and other racing-circuit teams that call North Carolina home, says Eddie Cagle, the company’s vice president.

While the auto-parts market is becoming increasingly competitive, G-Force South is easily holding its own.

“I doubt there’s a car that runs on Sunday that doesn’t have something

out of here,” Cagle says. “We’re the only manufacturer-direct supplier of drivelines in NASCAR.”

The company employs 15 in sales and service at its 54,000-square-foot Asheboro facility. All of its employees, including Cagle, have had extensive experience in motor sports before joining G-Force.

GROWING GLOBALLY AND LOCALLY

Technimark has become a truly global company, but not at the expense of its North Carolina roots.

While expanding its global presence with facilities in Mexico, Germany and China, the company remains commit-ted to its North Carolina hometown. Technimark recently added its second distribution center in Asheboro, a 100,000-square-foot facility on Bank Street.

Technimark employs between 400 to 500 people in Randolph County, where it maintains its headquarters, four manufacturing plants and three distribution centers, says Fred Richey, vice president of operations. The company manufactures plastic injection moldings, supply-chain solutions and value-added inventory management practices to a customer base that includes powerhouse companies such as Wal-Mart, Procter & Gamble and Black & Decker.

The business model is working, as Technimark has doubled in size in the last five years to more than $200 million in sales.

According to Richey, the primary factor behind the phenomenal growth is adherence to the company philosophy developed by president Don Wellington: Deliver customers products and serv-ices that readily “surpass their needs and expectations.”

HAUTE CUISINE TO GOTim James built a reputation catering

to the finest tastes in North Carolina. He still does, though through a much different method of delivery.

In 2006, James closed his catering business and opened James Foods in Asheboro, preparing dishes for packaging and delivery. He launched his company with three products: chicken potpies, meat lasagna and spinach-and-artichoke lasagna.

James continued to add menu items,

including macaroni and cheese, a Moravian chicken potpie, and dessert treats such as apple crisp and blackberry and peach cobblers.

The dishes are packaged in two sizes: a family-sized serving, which is distributed through local grocers under the James Foods brand, and a food-service product that serves between 10-15 people. James Foods’ customer base includes restaurants, hotels and nursing homes.

James Foods also operates a small retail shop at 430 N.C. Highway 49S, adjacent to its 50,000-square-foot warehouse. Customers can drop by to pick up their favorite foods at the retail store, which is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

IT’S ALWAYS DEERE SEASON

For John Deere customers in Asheboro, only the name and location have changed. Piedmont Tractor, a community institution since 1940, merged with James River Equipment

and relocated to a newer, larger facility on U.S. Highway 64.

Company officials say the merger has allowed the operations to enjoy better economies of scale. And when the local facility doesn’t have a piece of equipment, the store can get it quickly from one of the other 10 James River dealers, says Clyde Phillips, general manager and partner.

The new location is more than twice the size of the previous site, allowing for more products on the floor.

The company deals in both agri-cultural and consumer products, though it’s a hybrid customer that has become one of the company’s most promising.

“The biggest growth area is the part-time farmer who owns a small plot of land,” says Phillips, These nontraditional farmers are often unfamiliar with the equipment, so James River Equipment provides not just the machinery, but service and training for new customers.

AWAY TO CARAWAYWhether you’re looking for a place to

have a church picnic, convene a business

meeting or go “blobbing,” Caraway Conference Center has a space for you.

The retreat facility, owned by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, sits on 1,100 acres in the Uwharrie Mountains, just seven miles from Asheboro. It has 12 conference rooms with audio/video technology and wireless high speed Internet.

“You can eat, meet and sleep under one roof,” Caraway director Jimmy Huffman says. “Our facility is very clean and comfortable. Our food is something people really brag on, and the service of our staff.”

The word must be out, because Caraway welcomes about 24,000 guests per year, including 5,000 kids in its ever-popular summer youth camps.

The center has a pool, cabins, lakes, recreation fields, campground, hiking trails, challenge courses – and, of course, the blob.

Blobbing is a fun activity in which someone jumps onto a giant inflated balloon, catapulting another person into the lake, Huffman explains.

Excuse Us for BraggingLEADERSHIP RANDOLPH TURNS 20 IN 2008

D avid Smith says his stint with Leadership Randolph in 1989 was beneficial for his personal life, plus it encouraged him to advance in public life.

Today, Smith is serving his third term on the Asheboro City Council, and he is also the city’s mayor pro tem.

“Being the mayor pro tem means that if the sitting mayor doesn’t show up for a meeting or function, then I preside over that session,” Smith says. “As for Leadership Randolph, one of the greatest benefits I received from the program was the networking and interaction with my fellow participants. Many of my classmates from 1989 are still some of my closest friends today.”

Smith says that even though he is a native of Asheboro, he was amazed at what he learned in the class.

“I felt that I already knew about this community where I have always lived, but Leadership Randolph gave me a detailed, behind-the-scenes look at the workings of, for example, local government,” he says. “I learned about the services that both Asheboro and Randolph County provide its citizens, as well as the inner workings of law enforcement and the court system. It really opened my eyes.”

Over its 20-year history, Leadership Randolph has seen a total of 460 graduates who have completed the nine-month course that is sponsored by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce.

“Each class features about 30 professionals from throughout the community who meet once a month for nine months,”

says Stacey Miller, membership and events director for the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce. “Participants are introduced to a variety of issues and then interact with a number of business and community leaders.”

Class members take monthly field trips to learn about agriculture, education, health and human services, tourism, team building, history, government, business and industry, and criminal justice. The nine-month program ends with a “You and Your Community” session, where participants are put in a hands-on volunteer role at a local charitable agency.

“During the education day, for instance, class members tour an elementary, middle and high school to observe all the technological advancements, but participants also learn about the needs at some schools,” Miller says. “In addition, the day includes a trip to Randolph Community College to learn about programs there, including health occupations, photography courses and a f loral design curriculum.”

Miller says that to celebrate the 20th anniversary in 2008, Leadership Randolph is inviting former graduates to take a refresher course.

“There will be sessions on business etiquette, how to be a good corporate board member, worthwhile causes to volunteer for, and much more,” she says. “It will be nice to see some of the graduates return for some interesting next-step leadership classes.” – Kevin Litwin

Asheboro Mayor Pro Tem David Smith learned a lot about his home community through Leadership Randolph.

demanding course and the luxurious homes that surround it.

Designed by famed course architect Mike Strantz, the course, which was recently ranked the 7th Hardest Course in America by Golf Digest, takes advantage of the area’s unique rock formations and picturesque creeks. “Strantz is a very abstract designer,” says Chad Clark, Tot Hill Farms staff golf professional. “It’s so tough because it is a visually intimidating course with rock outcroppings, trees, water hazards – it looks very deceptive because the ball’s landing area is often obscured.”

While no large tournaments are scheduled at Tot Hill Farms, many

charity meets and corporate outings are held there.

“We have also hosted the Zoo Open and other local events,” Clark says. “We are a semi-private club, but we’re open for everyday play. The more golfers play here, the more they understand the course and they play it well.”

This picturesque course is nested on 367 acres of rolling countryside bounded on three sides by the Uwharrie Mountains, making it an excellent choice for golf and home building.

The golf community surrounding the course includes protected green-ways, nature trails and amenities with upscale luxurious homes held to a high architectural standard.

“It’s not a gated community, but it is very elegantly done,” Clark says.

Turning Trash Into Treasure

W hen artist Mike Durham looks at a discarded bicycle seat, he

doesn’t see refuse, he sees the beginning of a unique sculpture.

“I look at it and think of what I could turn it into,” Durham says. “I think I see something that could be a face or hands, maybe.”

Durham made a bird’s beak from that discarded banana-style bicycle seat, along with a muffler for its body, reflectors for eyes and rebar for legs. An old rake serves as its tail.

“That was my first piece, and I still have it,” he says. “Now, I create all kinds of things from interesting shapes I find.”

Durham is working on a robot using motorcycle turn signals for eyes and an old camera for its head.

“I have some of my pieces in my flower garden. People stop and ask about them all the time,” he says. “I also contribute to the North Carolina

Zoo fundraiser auction. I am always surprised at what my sculptures go for. It’s embarrassing but great.”

Last year, Durham’s piece went for $3,900 at the auction.

Sculptures aren’t the artist’s only creative outlet. The former art teacher also creates pottery using salt glazes. A typical salt-glaze piece has a glassine finish, usually with a glossy and slightly orange-peel texture.

“I make lots of face birdhouses,” Durham says. “The mouth is the opening for the bird, but I give each one a unique expression.”

B y the time Natalie Caviness was 15 years old, she had earned 11 college credits, thanks to

Randolph Early College High School. When she graduates from high

school at age 18, Caviness will not only receive her high school diploma but may have earned 64 college credits – enough for an associate’s degree.

“It would be pretty cool to already be a junior in college on the same day as my high school graduation,” says Caviness, currently a sophomore at Randolph Early College High School. “This is the opportunity that students have here.”

Randolph Early College is a public high school that opened in August 2006 on the campus of Randolph Community College. It is one of 70 early-college high schools across North Carolina that allow students to earn up to 64 college credits by the time the graduate from high school.

“Right now we have grades nine and 10, and we will add another grade in 2008-2009 and another in 2009-2010,” says Cathy Waddell, principal. “We will

have around 400 students once grades nine through 12 are in place.”

Students are chosen for Randolph Early College High School through an application process, and Waddell says students are accepted from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

“We often look at kids who are traditionally under-represented on college campuses, such as students who are economically disadvantaged and kids who are the first in their families to enroll in college classes,” she says. “Our students range from very bright to struggling, but they all have a desire to work. We choose 100 ambitious new ninth graders each year from the approx-imately 170 appli cations we receive.”

Caviness says she has noticed that some of the students who struggled in middle school are catching up to the top students at Randolph Early College.

“Everyone can learn a little something from everyone else, and this high school allows that to happen,” she says.

Caviness took four required high

school classes in ninth grade along with four college-credit courses. The college courses were introduction to computers, physical education, sociology and technology in society.

“It is a tough work load, but we are here to blend in with regular college students and are expected to act as adults,” Caviness says. “In fact, one of my best friends during my current sophomore year is a lady who has three children and is in one of my college English classes.”

As for her future, Caviness hopes to eventually attend the University of North Carolina.

“I have always wanted to be a pharmacist, but now I’m thinking about government communications,” she says. “It’s nice to take college courses in high school so that I can figure out what careers I might like, and which ones I’m not interested in. There are so many positives to Randolph Early College High School. It’s just a great idea, and I’m lucky to be here.” – Kevin Litwin

Go, Patriots, GoPRINCIPAL RICK DAWES PREPARES SCHOOL FOR FALL 2008 OPENING

Rick Dawes has been principal of Providence

Grove High School since early 2007 – and the

school doesn’t even open until August 2008.

Dawes has been busy ordering office furniture,

classroom desks and computer lab equipment while

construction continues on the sixth high school in

Randolph County. When it opens on Mack Lineberry

Road just off Highway 22, between Climax and

Franklinville, Providence Grove will be home

to the Patriots.

“Perhaps my biggest upcoming task will be the

naming of teachers in March 2008,” Dawes says.

“Most of the teachers will come from the existing

Eastern Randolph and Randleman high schools.”

Overcrowding at Eastern Randolph and Randleman

is the reason Providence Grove is being built.

“Providence Grove will open with about 700

students drawn from the two overcrowded schools,

and capacity at Providence Grove is expected to

eventually reach 1,000,” Dawes says.

As for his school philosophy, Dawes says his first

goal is having teachers form bonds with each student.

“I want teachers to know about the obstacles their

students face at home and at school, and let each

student know that we are here for them. It might

sound cliché, but I want all students at Providence

Grove High School to be the very best they can be –

in all aspects of life.”

Seagrove has long been known as a pottery lover’s paradise. But what you may not realize is that this peaceful community is home to more than 100

working studios, offering an amazing selection of pottery and ceramic art.

“Seagrove has a unique and ongoing history,” says Denny Mecham, executive director of the North Carolina Pottery

Center. “There’s a combination of cultural influences, but I think what really helped set Seagrove apart was the ability of local potters to make the transition from more functional pottery to decorative pieces after the industrial revolution. That ability to change and adapt helped them survive.”

Opened in 1998, the North Carolina Pottery Center pays tribute to the region’s rich heritage through a variety of permanent and changing exhibits, which honor both historic and living potters. Situated on nine acres, the center boasts an expansive gallery, an educational building and also plays host to a number of special events throughout the year.

“The fall is probably our busiest time, but there’s always something going on around here,” Mecham says, adding that the center also provides maps and information about local pottery studios.

“We’re constantly working to make Seagrove more of a destination – and to be sure visitors have the information they need,” Mecham says. “About 54 percent of our visitors come from out of state, and we have people who come back to see us year after year. They enjoy it because it’s an adventure – they can take their time, pack a picnic and just enjoy the ride. People can come here and get a nice overview. They can take a tour, ask questions, pick up a map and then feel pretty comfortable getting out there and visiting the studios on their own.”

Mecham says that this opportunity to visit with artists at work is something that appeals to both seasoned collectors and the casual tourist.

“It doesn’t take much to get a potter to talk about his work,” she says with a laugh. “It’s kind of an international language, and to see such a large and diverse community of potters is really amazing. We have families that have carried on their craft for generations, working together, inspiring each other. Each potter’s work is unique, but there’s such camaraderie. Even the most contemporary potters understand the traditions and demands of the craft, and they seem to embrace the lifestyle offered here.”

There was a time when parks employees around the country spent the bulk of their time

repairing teeter-totters, maintaining ball fields and protecting public statuary from visiting pigeons. But no longer.

Today, staffers like those in Asheboro’s busy Parks and Recreation department find themselves booking concerts, planning a theater season, keeping seniors fit and thinking about eco-friendly parks expansion – all while managing a full schedule of youth athletics. Recreation can be hard work.

“We’re not your same old rec department that has nothing but ball fields,” says Foster Hughes, parks and recreation director for the City of Asheboro. “Not everyone likes baseball or basketball. We cater to just about everybody with golf, fishing, tennis, a variety of programs, whether it’s a basketball competition for kids, Santa’s Workshop or going to a play or lecture at the theater. It seems like I don’t have enough time in the day.”

Traditional athletic programs are still the backbone of his department, Hughes says. But a forward-thinking, pro-active city council in the past few years, coupled with an eager and supportive citizenry, has dictated a dramatic expansion of the department’s activities.

Today, Asheboro boasts eight city

parks, in addition to recreational opportunities at Lake Lucas and Lake Reese. Ball fields, including several lighted facilities, are available at five parks. An expanded youth sports program now includes T-ball for boys and girls ages 5-7 and flag football for ages 5-9. A new 65-acre park in the works will include a four-to-six field soccer complex – a first for the city.

Seniors enjoy the annual Senior Games, and more than 300 county residents have been involved in Get Fit Randolph, a one-year program in conjunction with the Randolph County Health Department that helps increase fitness through creative incentives.

One of the city’s most successful new additions has been an indoor-outdoor skate park, opened in 2006. It contains more than 10,000 square feet of skating surface, lockers, concessions and indoor and outdoor viewing areas.

Cultural arts programs have enjoyed an exciting increase in recent years, says Hughes. The department has completed its third summer concert series and plans two series for summer 2008, one a First Friday Beach Music series, the other is a Sunday series featuring a variety of music. Both will run from May to August.

The Sunset Theatre, once an aban-doned movie palace, is being brought back to life as a 400-seat community arts venue, managed by the department. In the process of being renovated, the theater has already hosted hundreds of community events – concerts, lectures, plays, even weddings – since it was purchased in December 2005.

“We don’t let grass grow under our feet here in Asheboro,” he says. “Our goal is to continue to provide as wide a variety of things to do as we can for our people.” – Laura Hill

C ontinuous improvement may be a corporate catch phrase, but it’s also a tangible benefit to patients at Randolph Hospital.

The hospital has undertaken a series of upgrades during its 75-year history, the latest of which is a new Outpatient and Cancer Center opening later in 2008.

“This idea came out of our ongoing planning process to look at the health-care needs of Asheboro and Randolph County,” says Robert E. Morrison, hospital president and CEO. And what an idea it was. The 58,000-square-foot addition dramatically upgrades patients’ cancer-treatment options and expands outpatient services, making them more efficient, convenient and accessible.

“We had heard from people in the community, and we had heard from doctors on our medical staff, that the lack of comprehensive cancer services was the biggest unmet need in this community,” Morrison says.

A partnership with Moses Cone Health System, the Cancer Center will feature a linear accelerator, the latest radiation technology to battle the disease. Randolph Hospital began offering cancer services in 1999, and patient visits since 2002 have nearly tripled to about 7,000 annually.

The hospital outpatient numbers are staggering, with more than 96,000 outpatient visits in 2006.

“We had just outgrown the outpatient space that we had, and so this was a perfect time to create those synergies all in one location,” Morrison says.

The Outpatient Center allows seamless coordination of various services, including high-level CT scanning and ultrasound imaging, mammography, virtual colonoscopy, stereotactic breast biopsy and interventional radiology procedures. Patients may also receive minor surgical procedures such as bronchoscopies and endoscopies.

“This will be sophisticated outpatient services at a level that’s usually not available in a community of this size,” Morrison says.

Because Randolph Hospital is a nonprofit facility, community support runs high – and has throughout the hospital’s history, he adds. Through a bond issue, the hospital borrowed $23 million to make the Outpatient and Cancer Center a reality, yet the project’s total cost will be closer to $28 million. “We do not go to the community frequently for contributions, but as a nonprofit hospital with a mission of taking care of everybody without regard to their ability to pay, it’s really difficult to accumulate the money for major capital expenditures like this,” Morrison says. Thus, the hospital embarked on the “Building Quality Care Close to Home”

capital campaign, the hospital’s first major fundraising effort since 1988.

The community answered the call. By October 2007, $4.6 million had been raised and the campaign was still going strong. Members of the hospital boards, employees and medical staff pledged more than $1 million, while The Edward M. Armfield Sr. Foundation, a nonprofit charitable foundation in Greensboro, contributed $1 million, the largest gift in the history of the hospital.

Now that’s support. – Sharon H. Fitzgerald
