ne of largest banks on the East Coast opened back in 1907 with only $25,000 in its vault.
Back then, the leadership team of John Stanback Lewis and John M. Neely named their new venture First National Bank and headquartered their f ledgling operation in Asheboro. Lewis and Neely quickly doubled their assets to $50,000 in only a year’s time with a motto of “exceeding expectations through positive, powerful banking.”
Fast forward 100 years to 2007, and the growing First National empire had also been joined by other monetary institutions such as Catawba Valley, First Gaston and Northwestern banks. In 2007, officials decided to consolidate and rename the banks under one single brand – CommunityONE.
That move was to better ref lect the bank’s current operating philosophy and its geographic footprint, according to Michael C. Miller, president and CEO of CommunityONE.
“The rebranding initiative was a major
milestone and significantly strength-ened our franchise and brand awareness,” Miller says. “For the past 10 years or so, we have employed a vigorous growth strategy. Our banking operation has been moving into faster-growing markets with different characteristics than just the textile and furniture manufacturing markets that we have historically served.”
Today, CommunityONE Bank operates 45 offices in 18 counties throughout North Carolina and is conveniently well positioned, with branches along Interstates 40, 85 and the future I-73/74 corridor. The bank is still headquartered in Asheboro and has six locations here, with a few others located throughout Randolph County.
And as for its assets, CommunityONE has grown substantially from the initial $25,000 investment made by Lewis and Neely in 1907 under the First National Bank banner. Today, CommunityONE has close to $2 billion in assets.
“We also invest in technical and serv-ice training so that our employees can
expertly serve customers, and we offer online banking, e-statements, remote deposit and other conveniences that can save customers time and money,” says Cooper Thornton, CommunityONE marketing director.
Thornton adds that the bank also has a seven-member Wealth Management division, with each of those professionals offering investment advice to customers through careful planning.
“Our investment decisions are sup-ported by long-term fundamentals instead of short-term market phenomena,” he says. “This dedicated approach separates us from other investment firms. We help customers in the areas of asset management solutions, life insurance, trust and estate planning, and retirement planning.”
Miller adds that CommunityONE is a major advocate of employee volun-teerism, most recently participating in a National Get Smart About Credit Day in October 2008.
“This program helped teach students about money-management skills that
will help them make smart choices about how they handle credit in the future,” Miller says. “CommunityONE employees met with 1,500 middle and high school students to talk about credit reports, identify theft and how to create a wise personal budget. If we can reach these students at an early age, they are much more likely to make smarter and more responsible financial decisions later in life.”
Miller adds that CommunityONE Bank has always believed in the power of yes, which is an overall philosophy to help people achieve some of their dreams and goals.
“For more than 100 years, the bank has strived to exceed expectations through powerful, positive banking,” he says. “This pursuit has made CommunityONE what it is today – a century-old bank that still believes ever-so-youthfully in the power of yes. ‘Yes’ means putting customers first, and it serves as the bank’s promise to exceed expectations through better banking and outstanding service.”
here’s no doubt about it – J.B. Davis is a lucky man.Davis is president and CEO of Klaussner Home
Furnishings and has been with the company for 38 of the 45 years that it has been in business.
“Having been born and raised here, I’ve been blessed to remain in Asheboro where I have worked for Klaussner for almost four decades,” Davis says of his home town. “Asheboro and Randolph County have been very good to our company. With Klaussner still being the largest manufacturing employer in Randolph County, we feel it is our responsibility to always be a good neighbor.”
Klaussner Home Furnishings was founded in 1964 as Stuart Furniture Industries, but German furniture entrepreneur Hans Klaussner purchased the company in 1979.
He headquartered his operation in Asheboro and today, the company has 15 manufacturing plants in the United States that produce furniture items that are exported to more than 60 countries.
“Our company sells fabric- and leather-upholstered recliners, sofas, chairs and ottomans, along with tables, home entertainment centers, dining room furniture and bedroom furniture,” says Mark Walker, director of marketing and advertising for Klaussner Home Furnishings. “We market our products under the Distinctions, Realistic and Klaussner names to independent furniture dealers throughout the world. The Klaussner name is well respected around the globe.”
The company only has two actual furniture showrooms of its own – one in Asheboro that measures 100,000 square feet
and another in Las Vegas.“Most of our business is selling to independent dealers,
and we are known for custom orders, which have become a big part of who we are,” Walker explains. “For example, if a customer sees a Klaussner-brand couch they want to purchase but doesn’t really like the color, our employees in Asheboro can redo the piece in whatever fabric or leather that the customer chooses. Then we are able get it to the customer within two to four weeks, which is quicker than anyone else can do it in this business.”
Walker says the Klaussner product line offers more than 1,000 different styles, 1,100 fabric choices and 300 leather options. This has allowed Klaussner to become a full product and service provider for the whole home.
“We make items for the entire house, whether it’s a tiny wooden step stool, a small accent piece or a grand entertainment center to hold a modern stereo system and a 50-inch HDTV,” he says. “Our tag line is Choice, Selection, Possibilities. If needed, this company has the potential to produce 4,500 pieces per day nationwide.”
Davis adds that he is especially pleased that the entire Klaussner staff in Asheboro has always recognized the importance of its position in the local community.
“Asheboro has always been good to us, and we feel that we have been good to Asheboro by providing the jobs and a strong tax base,” Davis says. “Our caring employees and our company have always been very generous in responding to the needs of the community, and for that I am very proud.”
or a tried and true taste of the Carolinas, Randolph County turns to Savor the Flavor Catering. The company
was founded by culinary husband-wife duo Todd and Michelle Kellam in 2007 and now caters parties, reunions, corporate meetings and special events ranging from eight to 800.
“Our love of cooking got us thinking of catering,” says Michelle Kellam, a former restaurant manager and member of the Personal Chefs Network. “Friends and family have been our guinea pigs for years, and they encouraged us to step out on our own.”
And step out they did. Driven by their mottos Let us Light Your Fire and Wood-Fired Foods That Will Make Your Taste Buds Dance, the two decided to experiment with an eclectic mix of smoky seasonings ranging from Tuscan marinades and unexpected sauces to barbecue, coffee and Cajun-flavored rubs.
Together they developed a mouthwatering menu that would tempt any taste bud. Ginger Soy London Broil, Coffee-
Crusted Tenderloin and Jamaican Jerk Pork are just a few of the available entrées.
“What sets us apart is our willingness to try new things,” Kellam says. “I tell people our menu is just to give them ideas and let them know what we can do.”
While Savor the Flavor specializes in all things smoked, the Kellams also offer traditional menu items. Southern favorites include corn beef and cabbage, fried chicken and chicken pot pie, while appetizers, vegetarian dishes, soups and salads round of their seemingly endless menu – topped off with dessert, of course.
The Kellams’ creative cuisine has led to head-turning takes on otherwise ordinary desserts, from Coconut Grilled Pineapple and Smoked Roasted Apple Crisp to Grilled Banana Cream Pie and Shortbread S’mores.
“To get paid for doing something you love is everybody’s dream,” Kellam says. “Finding that thing sometimes takes awhile, even when it’s been there all the time.”

ith a revamped Web site and other new services, the Asheboro/Randolph
Chamber of Commerce is taking care of business for its members.
“The new Web site went live in September
2008,” says administrative assistant Amy Rudisill. “We changed the layout, freshened it up – it’s more user-friendly and has more pictures.
“We added a members-only section,” Rudisill continues. “Members are able to go onto the Web site, log in with their user name and password, and they can add a description, upload a logo – they really have control over that part of the site. They can add information about their business.”
Members also can now renew their chamber membership online. The new changes have proved popular with the organization’s 650-plus members.
“One of the main reasons we continue to make changes to our Web site and promote it is because it’s a benefit for businesses that are chamber members,” she says. “All these services are free as a part of their membership.”
Other important ongoing chamber programs include the Student Leadership Information for Tomorrow, or L.I.F.T., for high school sophomores and juniors, teacher recruitment, the Randolph Professionals Network, Leadership Randolph, and Get a L.I.F.E., which
attempts to reduce the school dropout rate and promote careers.
The chamber board, executive com-mittee and community leaders took part in an annual planning retreat in 2008, Rudisill says. The retreat was valuable and helped to hone the organization’s priorities for 2009, including member retention.
“These economic times have caused a lot of businesses to shut down,” Rudisill says. “We want to encourage our citizens to support or shop Randolph County. We really want people to support our local economy. As a chamber, we want to help businesses here and hopefully they can remain strong and get through the hard economic times.
“In the past, we have been a large-industry county and still are to an extent. There is a transition of moving away from heavy industry jobs to more of a tourism community,” Rudisill says. “We have the North Carolina Zoo here and many other attractions, but it’s never really been marketed as such.”
She says the chamber wants to work on that with the Randolph County Tourism Development Authority and the Randolph County Economic Development Corp.
“If we’re going to grow as a county in some of those areas, we’re going to have to work together and really help promote Asheboro and Randolph County as a tourist destination.”

ducational opportunity is knock-ing at the doors of Randolph County. The University Center of
Randolph County, which opened in fall 2008 on the Randolph Community College campus, now gives residents a way to earn bachelor’s degrees without leaving home.
Enrollees can choose from degrees in elementary education from Pfeiffer University, criminal justice from Greensboro College or business administration from Salem College. All classes are held at RCC, and students receive a significant tuition discount from the college affiliated with their chosen degree program.
The center got its start when RCC President Dr. Robert Shackleford realized that Randolph County residents were stuck choosing between their educations and their jobs or homes.
“If you wanted to get a four-year degree, you had to do it online, move away for four years or drive out of the county two or three nights a week,” he says. “We had many people who were very interested in education but couldn’t leave their jobs and families for it.”
So Shackleford began talking with regional colleges about offering degree

programs on the RCC campus. Pfeiffer, Greensboro and Salem jumped at the chance to participate.
“These institutions have been very willing to come and work with us, from the president on down. It’s been a very positive relationship,” Shackleford says.
He estimates that more than 90 percent of the center’s students wouldn’t go to college otherwise, and classes are also proving attractive for ad hoc personal and professional development.
“In the Salem College classes, there are people who are just interested in learning more about business or invest-ing for their own personal use or to enhance what they’re already doing in their careers,” Shackleford says.
Indeed, community response has been so favorable that Shackleford is already talking about expanding the center’s offerings. He hopes to add more
degree programs and perhaps more partner colleges in the near future.
“I’ve had about the most positive response to this of any initiative that I can remember,” he says. “Everywhere I go, people stop me and comment on how enthused they are about it.”
Shackleford himself may be the center’s biggest cheerleader. He believes it will equip residents for advanced careers, train teachers who are committed to Randolph County and raise the educational level of the county as a whole.
“We are committed to staying ahead of the curve and providing opportunities for people to participate in the new economy that is emerging in Randolph County,” he says. “We will use the University Center to serve the educa-tional and workforce development needs of our county.” – Kathryn Royster
ant the latest innovations in outpatient and cancer care? Look no further than
Randolph Hospital’s new facility. Opened in October 2008, the
Randolph Hospital Outpatient Center and Randolph Cancer Center offer the county unprecedented access to state-of-the-art medical care.
The centers share one building on the Randolph Hospital campus, with each center occupying its own floor. Randolph Hospital first began planning the centers in 2002, after assessing years of data from patient surveys.
“We found that our patients had problems with parking, convenience, accessibility and the different outpatient services being offered in different places in the hospital,” says Sandra Allen, vice president for hospital clinical services.
The hospital also uncovered a need
for comprehensive cancer care. Despite the presence of a growing oncology practice, the hospital’s cancer patients still had to travel out of town for radiation treatments.
Now those inconveniences are a thing of the past. Valet parking and extended hours improve access, and other features make the health-care experience more pleasant and effective.
The outpatient center offers an airy lobby decorated with live trees, private waiting areas and a café. Patients can enjoy the convenience of an on-site lab for pre-procedure testing, and the center’s imaging center boasts a 64-slice CT scanner. The facility is also equipped for procedures such as virtual colonoscopies, arterial studies and stereotactic breast biopsies.
“Our breast center really stands out,” Allen says. “Patients can get same-day
biopsies, have the diagnosis quickly and begin treatment right away.”
Patients also benefit from state-of-the art radiation technology and a comprehensive Healing Arts program.
Volunteers give music and art therapy classes, and several local artists have provided work for the healing garden and meditation room.
“I think all of this is really unique because it involves so much of our community who were willing to donate their time for this service,” Allen says.
Others have shown their support by donating to the Building Quality Care Close to Home capital campaign, which helped fund the facility’s construction.
Given the outpouring of support, Allen’s reaction is not surprising. “People are obviously very proud to have this new facility in the community,” she says. – Kathryn Royster
