a tur hrit t xprAt sunset you can see an extraordinary and enchanting spectacle. Because

o their characteristic composition o calcium and magnesium carbonate, at

this time o day the jagged peaks o the Dolomites take on a pink glow that

gradually turns to violet, a phenomenon known as the Enrosadira.

The Dolomites, nominated a World Heritage site by Unesco, are a natu-

ral treasure covering a large area o Trentino. Amazing towers o sheer

rock, a kaleidoscope o changing colours and ascinating contrasts, these

mountains have been the scene o exciting mountaineering eats. They

were named ater Dodat de Dolomieu, the Dauphin scientist who, in

1789, was the rst to study their chemical composition and discovered

the rocks very special mineral, called Dolomia in his honour. The Trentino

peaks are ideal or climbing, mountain biking and walking in peace and

solitude. Two impressive mountain chains protect Trentino: in the west

are the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello with its glacier (the largest in

the Italian Alps), while in the east are the more extensive Dolomite ranges

o Fassa, Latemar, the Pale di S. Martino and the Marmolada, the Queen

o the Dolomites rising to a height o 3,342 metres, destination o skiers

    and mountaineers.

lk gr - r kCrystal clear waters that can be simply contemplated to inspire a eeling o

peace and quiet, or that can be the destination o a more active holiday. Tren-

tino has something or everyone with almost three hundred lakes where you

can relax and practise a vast range o water sports, although to protect the

natural environment motor boats are not permitted. Most o the lakes are

situated at altitudes over 1500 metres and nearly all are surrounded by high

mountains, like pure blue gems amidst the peaks o the Dolomites. The kingo the lakes is certainly Garda. Here sailing and windsurng have ound their

    mirrorso the sky

natural habitat, thanks to the presence o its playul (and indispensable)

companions in adventure, the winds brought by the Ora and Peler currents.

Not ar away is Lake Ledro, where you can still see the remains o lake-dwell-

ings dating back to the Bronze age. On the Altopiano della Paganella is Lake

Molveno, the largest lake in the Alps above 800 metres and a scene o rare

beauty with the Brenta peaks reected in the water. The most popular lakes

are Levico, Caldonazzo and Lavarone, not orgetting Toblino with its impres-sive setting and its castle, immortalised by hundreds o painters.

a uti w-biLeave the hustle and bustle o urban lie behind and come and explore the

orests, meadows, elds and armlands o Trentino, meet the people who

live there and learn about their traditions. Here, a ew leisurely hours riding

along cycle paths provide a unique combination o sport and nature, healthy

exercise and culture. A vast network o almost 400 kilometres o cycle routes

(clearly sign-posted and with regular bicigrill rereshment stops) covers the

length and breadth o the province. Unspoilt scenery and exciting trails are

waiting to be explored on the Dolomiti Brenta Bike circuit, a 160 kilome-tre mountain bike trail in the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, and on two new

trails, Mountain&Garda Bike, with dramatic views over Lake Garda, and

    nature,exerciseand good health

Dolomiti Lagorai Bike, which runs through the Lagorai mountain range.

But you dont need to go to such efort to keep t, simply walking is enough

and Trentino is the ideal place or this. Outdoor activities in the mountains are

by ar the best way o keeping healthy, whether walking up gentle slopes or

undertaking more demanding treks, perhaps on delightul trails such as Trek

o the Legends, 200 km o ootpaths through the Dolomites with ascents

and descents totalling a height diference o 16,000 m, or the Dolomiti Bren-

ta Trek with its alternative ootpaths, expert and country. The lower levels ooxygen in the air at altitude mean that once you are back down in the valley

your blood and muscle tissues will benet rom increased oxygenation.

o th pt i th In Trentino, ood and wine are the epitome o ne taste and healthy eating.

Every valley and every corner o the countryside preserve traditions and

recipes handed down or generations. Seven Wine and Food Routes have

been mapped to lead you to the best in local agricultural products and

oods. These tasting routes cover the whole region and bring together

producers, institutions and tourist operators whose priority is quality and

who conorm to strict regulations. The province boasts a great variety o

ood and wine, such as Trentodoc, the pride o Italian sparkling wine, thered wines Marzemino and Teroldego, and the white wine Nosiola. And then

there is the DOP Garda Trentino extra virgin olive oil, a product o rare qual-

    a tasteo the good lie

ity, light and with a very low acid content; or the amous Val di Non apples

(the Golden Delicious, Stark Red Delicious and Renetta varieties having

DOP classication since 2003). Among the excellent dairy products are

Trentingrana, made only with cows milk rom small and medium sized dairy

arms, and Spressa delle Giudicarie, while as regards river sh, the Rain-

bow Trout and Salmon Trout have protected designation o origin status.

Numerous events dedicated to the world o ood and wine are also a per-

ect way to discover Trentinos specialities and the uniqueness o its ter-ritory, its waters and its climate, elements that over the centuries have

nurtured its agriculture and given lie to its genuine produce.

Trt Rrt hihihtCastles, medieval villages, old churches and museums: Trentino is a treas-

ure chest o art, history and culture. Many traces o an important past

survive in the two towns o Trento and Rovereto as well as in other mi-

nor centres. The city o Trento is the capital o the province and is where

Italian and Central European cultures come together. Its origins go back

to the Roman period and remains o the ancient town o Tridentum are

preserved in an underground archaeological site. The magnicence o the

Renaissance is still visible on the attractive aades o the many rescoed

palazzos which add a touch o colour to the historic centre.

The City o the Council o Trent is dominated by the Buonconsiglio Cas-

tle, a medieval ortress converted to an elegant residence by the Prince-

    a view o historyand culture

Bishops and now an important museum. There are also other important

museums, such as the Tridentine Diocesan Museum and the Tridentine

Museum o Natural History. The Cathedral is an impressive example o

Romanesque architecture while its square is one o the most beautiul

in Italy. Rovereto has always been a place o lively cultural exchange. The

Venetian domination has let some ne examples o architecture and to-

day the town is known or its numerous museums, in particular Mart, one

o the most important contemporary art galleries in Europe. Spreading a

message o peace and brotherhood is the amous Maria Dolens bell, cast

rom First World War cannons; it tolls every evening at dusk in memory o

    those allen in all wars.
