Sumters future litera llyis looking up.
The aviation andaerospace technology
industries rank high among the areasthat community leaders have identifiedfor potential growth, says JaySchwedler, President and CEO of theSumter Economic Development Board. This goal is t he result of a long andthorough planning process that hasincluded identifying the communitys
assets and resources.
Shaw Air Force aseSince 1941, Sumter has been home
to Shaw Air Force Base. Its home to the20th Fighter Wing of the Air CombatCommand, a unit that houses andsupports the countrys largestoperational F-16 wing. Shaw continuesto grow. Sumter will welcome some1,400 members of the 3rd Army andtheir fami lies when Georgias Fort

McPherson closes. The pool of former service men and
women gives Sumter an edge when it
comes to attracting new business, saysMajor General Tom Olsen (USAF-Retired), who served as deputycommander of the U.S. CentralCommand A ir Forces at Shaw. A recentstudy shows that of the 15,000 workersin South Carolina with aviation skills, more than 6,000 live in the Sumter area.
We have a highly ski lled, highlycapable workforce with an excellentwork ethic, Olsen says. The averageretiree has 10 to 20 years of experience
working with all aspects of aircraftoperations and maintenance.
otiated Labor PoolOver the years, Sumter has proven
hospitable to i ndustry, with about16 percent of area workers involved inmanufacturing. Eaton Corporation,a Cleveland-based manufacturer ofelectrical products, employs morethan 500 people at their Sumter facility.Plant manager Dan Yount says theDevelopment Board is on target with
their assessment of the local labor pool. Our experience with t he workforcein Sumter is that people are verymotivated, Yount says. They are veryeager to learn and very energized aboutbeing real partners in your business.
Conenient LocationAnother notable asset is the countys
location. Sumter sits just off I-95, about50 miles from the states capitol inColumbia and 100 miles from the deep-water port city of Charleston. Perhaps
more important to Sumters ability toattract aviation businesses, though, isits proximity to North Charleston,
which will soon to be home to a plantthat wil l manufacture Boeings new787 Dreamliner.
Schwedler predicts that manyaviation-related businesses will lookto relocate to the area once the Boeingplant is up and running. Sumter ispoised to capitalize on this trend. Thecounty and city have worked di ligentlyto prepare for growth by developing andcertify ing industrial sites near theSumter Municipal Airport.
Strategic Plan for GrowthWhile Sumters focus is on an
aviation industry, Schwedler believesSumters strategic plan is more thanpie-in-the-sky dreaming.
A lot of the pieces of the puzzle arebeginning to fit together, he notes. Wejust have to keep chipping away. We feellike we have an incredible opportunityto be a community that supports theseindustries as well as many others, including support for our existingindustrial partners.
As with any worthwhile endeavor, there are real challenges. Thecompetition for such businesses is stiff.Sumter competes with much largercities including Charlotte, Atlanta andNashville, and leaders must aggressivelypursue new business opportunities.
Timing is critical but we are notafraid of competition because we areprepared, Schwedler says. We cannotwait for them to seek us out. Weve gotto go knock on their doors.
In june 2009, the Sumter Development
Board and the Sumter Smarter Growth
Initiative (SSGI) unveiled a new marketing
campaign designed to attract the attention
of development prospects. The goal of the
campaign, called American Spirit. Global
Edge. is to create local jobs and capital
investment for the Sumter community. The
campaign, which has won seven awards
from economic development associations,
includes promotional and educational
materials, such as printed materials to
inform visitors about Sumter, as well as
interactive software materials designed for
industrial and commercial development
prospects. The SSGI is hoping to grab the
attention of corporate executives, site
consultants and others who decide where
their companies will build or expand. Visit

n Noember 2008, Sumter

ncluded on the list are
grassroots initiaties that
range from improing rural

added new ball fields and a

new Health Sciences Center, wesubscribed to the pretend theory oflearning, she explains. We had topretend to turn on the oxygen f lowmeter or pretend to turn on anoperating room light. Now, we havethe actual equipment to practice on.
In addition to more and betterclassrooms, the new Health SciencesCenter replicates doctors offices, operating rooms and hospital wards. When studying childbirth, for example, nursing students now come face-to-facewith a computerized Gaumardsimulator named NOELLE.
She talks. She urinates. She bleeds, the dean explains. She actually pushesbaby HAL out of her body. We can evenmake the simulator die. Its as close tohaving a real patient as you can get.
ealth Sciencesedical Degree andCertificate Programs
The Health Sciences Departmentoffers diploma programs that rangefrom nursing to surgical technology,
and certif icate programs fromphlebotomy to massage therapy, andthe college has always graduated top-notch students. In May 2010, CCTCwas one of only seven of the states 23nursing schools to have a 100 percentpassing rate for those taking the statelicensing exam. The new facility simplyensures that the college continues tooffer the best education available.
The medical field is a scary placebecause you have peoples lives inyour hands, Laney continues. Thetechnological boom simply requiresthat medical professionals be traineddifferently. Computer-simulatedtraining decreases a students anxietyand increases their experience so thatwhen they get in a real situation, theyknow what to do.
New Life forDowntown Sumter
Certainly the new Health Sciences
Center benefits students and teachers,Laney says, but it has a lso breathednew life into downtown Sumter. The
city donated the rambling old WesternAuto Building for the project. Notonly has a downtown landmark beenrepurposed, but local businesses alsoreport an inf lux of new customers.
Though the current job marketis tight, numerous studies point to acoming shortage of skilled health-careworkers and the people whoteach those workers in not onlySouth Carolina, but also nationwide. The college admitted its largest class ofnurses in 2010, and has also increasedenrollment for other health-care-relatedmajors. Residents in Clarendon, Lee,Kershaw and Sumter counties standto benefit most, as the majority ofgraduates go to work in nearbyhospitals and doctors offices.
If you havent been a patientrecently, sooner or later you are goingto be one, the dean says. Then youare going to want a phlebotomist whoonly has to stick you once to draw
blood or a massage therapist who canrelieve your suffering with t he touchof her hands.

rive through Pinewoodand youll see a snapshotof the quintessential smallSouthern town. Quiet.
Unassuming. Beautiful in a way thatsboth endearing and heartbreaking inthe same instant.
A wide thoroughfare pierces theheart of downtown. Most folks aroundthese parts call it Mai n Street, but thesigns contradict them. This is ClarkeStreet. Theres a town hall, a smatteringof tidy, well-groomed churches andhouses for the nearly 500 souls whocall this South Carolina town home.
The old Pinewood Depot remains
the towns most recognized andcherished landmark. Though it wasbuilt in 1889, only a year after thetown was founded, the station hasbeen lovingly restored and is listed onthe National Register of Historic Places.
Curved braces support wide eaves, and the end rafters form an ellipse.Stand on the stations steps and youcan easily imagine the excitementpassengers of yesteryear must have feltwhen waiting for a train to arrive. TheAtlantic Coastal Railroad was the only
conduit to the outside world, both theway in and the way out.
There are many ways out of townthese days, but some people chooseto return home.
Pinewood is a great place to live, says lifelong resident Travis McIntosh,a financial consultant in nearbySumter. We have all the benefits of asmall town, but were 15 to 20 minutesfrom larger towns like Sumter,Manning and Summerton, and
less than an hour from Columbia. If the people make the place,
McIntosh says theres none better thanPinewood. The best thing about thiscommunity is the people, he continues. You know your neighbors. Theyrefriends youve known your whole life. You dont worry about your kidswalking down the street to play.
Still, if you confine your explorationto the 1.1 square mile that enclosesPinewood proper, you will miss someof the areas greatest treasures. Headout of town and youll find wild andwonderful Sparkleberry Swamp justa few miles to the southwest.
Named for the untamed bushesthat populate the region, this area isactually an old cypress and tupeloforest submerged in the north end ofLake Marion. Favored by bird watchers, kayakers and fishermen, the swamp iscrawling with wildlife. There are snakesand all igators, osprey and egrets, woodpeckers and warblers.
Sparkleberry is paradise for naturelovers, but unless youre experienced or traveling with someone who is youll want to hire a guide to help younavigate the swamp. There are campingsites available near the swamp, including Elliotts Landing andCampground, the oldest campgroundon Lake Marion.
istory and Architectureat illford Plantation
Pinewood also sits at the southernentrance to the High Hills of the Santee,a long, hilly ridge at the countyswestern border. Because even a slight
elevation cools the air, these low hillsonce hid many summer homes built bywealthy plantation owners looking toescape the heat of the Low Country.
Considering this history, its onlymildly surprising that one of theSouths most beautifu l homes canbe found 5 miles west of Clarke Street.
Were in the suburbs of Pinewood, quips Louie Hall, the caretaker atMillford Plantation.
To reach the house, one meandersthrough moss-draped forests and a longdirt roads, seemingly headed nowhere. But reaching the destination is its ownreward. The Greek Revival-style
Millford Plantation is f lanked bylive oaks and magnolias, and boastssoaring Corinthian columns and awide, sweeping porch.
The interior is equally dazzling. Adomed rotunda encloses a breathtakingcircular staircase, plus theres a granddining room with circular wal ls at oneend. Much of the custom-made DuncanPhyfe furniture still graces the home.
Then there are the stories. Millfordis said to have escaped burning duringthe Civil War because the Union general
was the brother of the homes architect.A phone call secures a group tour
year round, but public tours are offeredon the first Saturday of most months(closed in January, open every weekendin April).
Im a little prejudiced, says Hall, but you wont see a house anywhereany prettier than this. If you like greatarchitecture, this is the one to see. Andonce you see Millford, youll want tocome back.

The program provides informationabout where the Sumter Countycommunity is headed, and we allowour members to have major input onthe chambers overall plans for theupcoming year, he says. People inattendance come from the world ofeducation, government, industry, the
arts, small business and several otherprofessions, and you probably wouldntbe able to get such a diverse cross-section of people at any other functionduring the year. But they are all inattendance at the retreat.
Blackwelder says several subjectswill be covered at the upcoming 40thanniversary event, including thechambers off icial unveiling of itsnew Images Sumter2011 magazine.
We will also present awards suchas Business Person of the Year, MilitaryCitizen of the Year, Manufacturer ofthe Year, Teacher of the Year andbeautification awards, he says. The2011 retreat wil l also feature importantdiscussions about the upcomingconsolidation of our two schooldistricts that will happen in July 2011.That consolidation will involve 17,000students and a $100 million budget.
The long-standing Greater SumterChamber of Commerce currentlyhas 1,000 members and will turn an
impressive 100 years old in 2012.It also recently became accreditedas a four-star chamber by the U.S.Chamber of Commerce.
Good things always come out of theretreat, Blackwelder says. There are alot of interesting discussions, problem-solving and camaraderie.
