PREVIOUSLY ENJOYED—————————————————————–—
Rochester— A special evening of baseball, originally planned as
a farewell to our graduating undergraduates, inadvertently
turned into a gathering for students, faculty, staff, and alumni
alike. Nearly 40 CIS folks packed the private Power Alley Grille
at Frontier Field for a Rochester Red Wings game on May 16.
Guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat picnic and even caught a
few stray baseballs. The night truly “went out with a bang”
with fireworks after the game.
DC—The 8th annual DC/Maryland/Virginia alumni reception
took place on Sunday, June 1. CIS alumnus Jon Roberts and his
wife Jessie graciously hosted this year’s event at their home.
Well over 20 CIS alumni joined faculty Dr. John Schott and Dr.
Chip Bachmann for heavy hors d’oeurves and lively
conversation. Pictures of the event (courtesy of Jessie) can be
viewed via the CIS Picasa gallery.
CIS Associate Professor Jie Qiao is the founder and chair of
Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Entrepreneurship (WiSTEE) Connect, whose vision is to
“promote women leadership in Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Entrepreneurship (STEE), bridge the gap
between Science and Business, and provide a forum to learn,
connect and lead.” WiSTEE Connect recently hosted its first
regional event on April 28 at RIT. “LEAN IN Together with
WiSTEE Connect” introduced the organization’s vision and
progress to the Rochester academic and business community,
and featured a roundtable discussion and networking
reception. The event was a smashing success with over 60
female professionals in attendance, and was featured by Time
Warner Cable News. A full summary of the event is available
here. Stay connected and follow WiSTEE Connect by

Commencement 2014
CIS celebrated 2014 Commencement with 7 BS Imaging Science
graduates, 9 MS Imaging Science graduates, 3 PhD Color
Science graduates, and 11 PhD Imaging Science graduates. You
can see the full list of BS, MS, and PhD graduates, along with
PhD dissertation titles, here. PhD candidates were hooded as
part of the RIT Convocation ceremony, which was recorded and
can be viewed online. William Daniel Phillips, an award-
winning researcher with the National Institute of Standards and
Technology who shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics, gave
the Convocation address. From RIT News, “Phillips employed
balloons, liquid nitrogen, carnations, rubber bands and a
racquetball to demonstrate not only some principles of physics,
but also the importance of finding fun in your life’s work.”
Congratulations to the Class of 2014!
Imaging @ ImagineRIT
CIS was represented by over a dozen exhibits at this year’s
ImagineRIT Innovation and Creativity Festival, which enjoyed
its highest attendance yet. You can view all of the CIS-related
exhibits here. The undergraduate freshmen demonstrated their
Intelligent Multi-Camera Video Chat system, while the first-
year PhD students demonstrated the outcome of their Vehicle
Hazard Detection and Alert System. This was the first year
the PhD program participated in their own year-long project
along the same lines as the Innovative Freshmen Experience,
and it was a resounding success—so much so that they even
won the Paychex “Most Creative Exhibit” sponsor award! Their
project was also featured by the news and on the radio.
We hope you’ll join us for next year’s festival on Saturday,
May 2, 2015.
Seniors graduating with their BS degrees celebrate during Commencement. This year’s class was the first to have gone through the Innovative Freshmen Experience project four years ago.

Summer Course Offering
CIS is pleased to offer a 10-day course, Foundations of
Imaging Science, as part of the Center for Emerging &
Innovative Sciences’ Summer 2014 short course series on
Optics, Photonics, and Imaging (OPI). Full scholarships, made
possible through a grant from the Employee and Training
Administration in the US Department of Labor, are
available. The courses are designed for displaced workers
who would like to work in one of the OPI industries, people
who have jobs outside of the OPI industries but would like
to transition into one of them, and/or people who
currently work in an OPI industry and are interested in
furthering their career. If you or anyone you know would be
interested in attending our short course, you may find more
information by visiting the course description website.
