Ice-breakerIce-breaker

Do you think a computer is male of female?

Page 3: IMIH.ICTeacherstoolkit

Implementing ICT in schools of Hanoi

A computer is female...A computer is female... Almost no one understands their internal logic...

The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else...

The message "Bad command or file name" is about as informative as, "If you don't know why I'm mad at you, then I'm certainly not going to tell you"...

Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval...

As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it...

Page 4: IMIH.ICTeacherstoolkit

A computer is male...A computer is male...

They have a lot of data, but are still clueless...  They are supposed to help you solve problems,

but half the time they are the problem... As soon as you commit to one you realize that, if

you waited a little longer, you could have obtained a much better model...

In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on...

Big power surges tend to knock them out for the rest of the night...

Is teacher talk bad?Is teacher talk bad?

Some kinds of teacher-talk are bad. Other kinds of teacher-talk are 'good; and even essential

It is often better to have no teacher at

all rather than a bad or foolish

one

The question is...The question is...

... not 'how much teacher-talk is there in a lesson?’ but 'what kind of teacher-talk is there?

... not 'how much time do teachers spend talking?' but rather 'How do teachers talk?' 'What do they do while they are talking to their classes?' 'When they talk, do they engage the attention of the class, present them with comprehensible input and also allow them to interrupt, comment, ask for clarification, and so on?'

Advantages of teacher talkAdvantages of teacher talk

It is a convenient method for delivering an explanation

Unlike a book, it can be adapted to the correct ‘level’ for the class, and the content can be tailored to the needs of the class

It can be inspiring Little preparation or resourcing is required for the

experienced teacher It is a rapid method of presenting material It is a more personal method of communicating

than written methods

Page 13: IMIH.ICTeacherstoolkit

Disadvantages of teacher talkDisadvantages of teacher talk There is no feedback on whether understanding has taken

place Retention is very slow, so backup is required to ensure that

information is understood and remembered The teacher must go at the same pace with the whole class Inexperienced teachers tend to deliver material too quickly It can be boring There is no active student involvement Students’ concentration span is shorter than for other

learning methods Students are not given the opportunity to use the ideas

being taught
