Pidamos misericordia a Dios y mantengamos a
P. Joachim Lepcha
House of God
During this Lenten journey, we are invited to look into ourselves; to make our own heart and body pure and holy or make it just as the usual yearly ritual of Lent, that may not have any effect on our lives. The Gospel of the Third Sunday of Lent reveals another personality of Jesus. Jesus is angry because he found the people made his Father’s house a den of thieves. “Zeal for your house will consume me.” (John 2:17) His zeal consumed him to have this righteous anger. Revelation 3:15–16, makes it very clear that he prefers us either hot or cold. When we are hot, we are on fire for Him, and that is His ultimate desire for us. If we are cold, He does not like it because we have no part in Him, but being lukewarm, is totally unacceptable.
We are not allowed to keep quite or remain
indifferent while things go wrong in the House of God, our homes, offices, or any place we are present. The church is the House of God, a place of worship. We need to keep it holy and respectful and follow the protocol and liturgical decorum of the Church.
If Jesus visits our churches today, he would
surely be very angry with what he sees: unwanted solicitors, thieves victimizing churchgoers, vendors all around, even in front the church door. Restrooms dirty and filthy; noisy children; garbage scattered all over, dogs roaming around, unruly behavior and improper attire of churchgoers. He would see people talking or sending text messages on their cell phones and many other distractions. These are only the physical aspect of the Church.
If we look at our communal aspect, being a
community of believers gathered in the place of worship, there are more abuses: ill-prepared ministers and servers, shabby liturgical celebrations, lack of devotion and preparation of the priests, unworthy and sacrilegious communions; the in-fighting, and power struggle among church leaders, gossiping, and all sorts of scandalous behaviors. The anger of Jesus displayed in the Gospel should frighten us and lead us to do something to minimize, if not totally stop all these abuses against the “House of the Father.” Let us think and reflect on it.
Let us beg mercy from God and keep ourselves
and the House of God pure and holy. We are called to purify ourselves and give due respect to our God and His dwelling. We are purified by His mercy. As Pope Francis said, “Do I allow Jesus to make my heart a little cleaner? Jesus does not cleanse our hearts with a whip, but cleans with tenderness, with mercy, with love. Mercy is His way of cleaning.”

In today’s Gospel Jesus is asked “What sign can you show us?”. Every day we can see signs of how God has visited us in the blessings of our lives. Let us be a sign of God’s love by being a blessing to others. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can be a sign of God’s love to the suffering and poor.

Did you know?
Helping children cope with grief With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many children are grieving — they may have lost family members, they are cut off from their friends and their routines, and their lives have changed significantly. Parents can help children work through their strong emotions by acknowledging their feelings and encouraging children to talk about them. Talk with them honestly and simply, helping them to answer any questions they might have about why this is happening, or what will happen next. Often, showing children that they are loved unconditionally can help them handle strong feelings of loss and sadness. For more information, please visit, https://occatholic.com/talking-about-god-and-grief-with-children/ ¿Sabias que?
