Homily 15th Sunday Year C (Fr. Seno) (Deut. 30:10 -14; Col 1:15-20; Lk 10:25 -37)

My dear children of God, in today’s Gospel, the scholar of the law asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor’? (Lk 10:29). The common answers at that time would be: my neighbor comes from my own tribe, or circle, or religion. But the answer Jesus gave was: my neighbor is whoever I chose to be a neighbor to. The real question is not who do I consider to be my neighbor, but who am I willing to treat as a neighbor? What kind of a neighbor am I? It is a question we ought to ask ourselves every now and then, but it is one we cannot answer ourselves. “A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho”. Jesus does not attach any religious or social labels to the man, though it is reasonable to assume he was a Jew. Was he a good man or a bad man? Was he an important man or an unimportant man? These questions are irrelevant. He was a human being and a child of God. That is all that matters. “He fell victim to robbers…” heartless, violent men, who prey on the weak. Jesus lived in a real world. He knew that such people do exist. We know about them ourselves. ‘A priest and a Levite saw him lying there half dead passed on the opposite side.’ The priest and the Levite were religious people. Yet they did not even feel compassion for the wounded man. Religion without compassion is a contradiction. Without compassion one cannot call oneself a true human being never mind a truly religious person. ‘A Samaritan traveler came along…’ He saw the wounded man, felt compassion for him, and went at once to his aid. He did not worry about the trouble it caused him. Nor was he put off by the fact that the man was a Jew – Jews and Samaritans were enemies at that time. Children of God, when you watch a drama or play, it does not tell us the whole of a person’s life. What it does is place a person in a situation. Then, from the way the person deals with that situation, his or her character is revealed to us. This is precisely what Jesus does in his story. He places the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan in a situation. They are faced with a decision: To stop and help the wounded man, or to continue on about their own business? There is no escape for them, and no place to hide. They have to pass by; the Samaritan decides to stop and help. Crisis does not create character, it merely reveals it. In times of crisis people reveal what is already inside them – the generous person or the selfish person, the hero or the coward. One moment or event may cause a person to reveal his essential being. The encounter with the wounded man was such a moment for the priest, the Levite and the Samaritan. What did it reveal about the characters of the priest and Levite? It revealed a very negative thing, namely, that they were self-centered persons. They would not put themselves out to help another person. When the crunch came, they put themselves first. And what did it reveal about the character of the Samaritan? A very admirable thing, namely, that he was a caring person. He was the kind of man who could not pass another human being in pain without wanting to relieve that pain. My dear friends, life is continually testing us. Every day we are tested in little ways, and now and again in big ways. These tests reveal the kind of people we are – fundamentally unselfish people, or fundamentally selfish people. Big opportunities are rare, and few could perform them. But we get many small, less spectacular opportunities to show care and concern for another human being in need. The extent of our virtue is determined, not by what we do in extraordinary circumstances, but by our normal behavior. It is humility, everyday incidents rather than extraordinary ones that reveal character. Every little action shapes our character. Each of us has the capacity to care. Small opportunities to care come our way every day. It is within our power to say a kind word, to offer a little sympathy, to give a little support. These are the little drops of ‘oil and wine’ which can take some of the pain out of a wound. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho represents the road of life. At the end of the story Jesus said to the scholar, “Go and do likewise” that is like the Samaritan. Those words are spoken to us too. And since we are still on that road, we can still carry them out. So the Lord, is saying to us today go and be like the Samaritan to everyone you meet in your journey in life.

Pastor’s Corner Beloved, here’s our Seventh Reflection on the Second Definition of Evangelization by Pope Paul VI in Evangelii Nuntiandi: “…. The purpose of evangelization is therefore precisely this interior change, and… in one sentence…. the Church evangelizes when she seeks to convert, solely through the divine power of the message she proclaims, both the personal and collective consciences of people, the activities in which they engage, and the lives and concrete milieu which are theirs” (Paragraph, 18). Here’s a follow-up on this line: “The purpose of evangelization is precisely this interior change.” This change is about achieving sincere commitment to genuine love as God commanded. In fact, love is so important that St. Augustine (354-430), would say, “Love and do what you will.” Today, the “mind” of our world is so polarized, defiled, and full of hate, intolerance, and unforgiveness: “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication… adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man” (Mark 7:21-23). The world desperately needs in-terior change. If the human heart is renewed and transformed in LOVE, everything will fall in place. Each of us needs to prayerfully, respectfully and lovingly commit to DIALOGUE IN LOVE, the dialogue of salvation. As Christ’s disciples, we need not become part of the problem of the world (cf. John 17:14, 16); Become the PEACEMAKERS (cf. Matt 5:9). Let’s make a difference in the world by promoting unity in diversity, loving and respecting everyone, even those we disagree with on grounds of faith. The Word of God – the word of peace, forgiveness, unity, and harmony – can heal our broken world and bring about a new creation (cf. 2Cor 5:17). BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law” (Rom 13:8). INVITATIONS FOR WORSHIP: Please, in this spirit of the New Evangelization, always be keen to invite family and friends to our parish. Tell them, “Come and see!” (John 1:39, 46). BLESSING OF HOMES AND VISITATION. Do you want to know your Pastor well? Invite him to your house. I am open to any parishioner who wants me to visit or bless their homes. Call the Parish Office: 352–687-4031 and schedule for the visit. It is good to have your priest at your home and you get to know him better that seeing him from afar. OUR CATHOLIC APPEAL: Please help us to make our Goal. May God bless you abundantly as you support us

Our Catholic Appeal- Our parish goal is $47,062.00. Our total is $36,963.77 with 190 families. We still need $10,098.23 Once we achieve our goal, the majority of the additional funds will be returned to our parish to support our own special needs. Thank you for your consideration and generous response. OCA envelopes are in the lobby of the Church and the side doors.

FOOD PANTRY Summer is upon us, and sometimes the break of our routine makes us forget things. We have noticed that donations of can goods and other food items dwindle in the summer months yet, the need of food for our families is still very essential, especially families with children. We ask when you do your grocery shopping to think of our pantry. Even a single can of meat or soup or jar of peanut butter and jelly, or gift card can make a difference. It is only through your generosity that we are able to help so many in need. Thank you for your continued generosity and loving support. Food pantry is open the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
