A Message from the President

Dear Friends of Immaculate,

On behalf of the IHS community, I extend my thanks to you for helping to advance the mission of Immaculate High School. Your partnership pro-vides the opportunity for Immaculate students to develop to their full potential. Students are inspired academically in the classroom, called to serve others through philanthropic opportunities, taught discipline and perseverance on the playing field, and encouraged to explore their talents while performing on stage. Your gift expands horizons and helps shape lifelong values. Simply put, your gift lasts a lifetime!

As you look through these pages, you will see your gift at work here at IHS. You’ll enjoy photos of students in action and see how they, like you, are making a difference in other’s lives and in our communities. These are the young leaders of tomorrow who will ultimately make our world a better place.

We are grateful to you for volunteering, advising, and partnering with us during the past year.

We could not have achieved our success without you. Immaculate has a very bright future be-cause we are blessed with a very talented faculty and staff, a dedicated and supportive Advi-sory Board and Diocese, committed and hardworking students, as well as generous friends and alumni, such as you.

We look forward to continuing this success in the upcoming school year as we all work together to make a good school even better!

Go Mustangs!

A Message from the Chairman of the Board

As chairman of the IHS Advisory Board, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this report on the accomplishments of Immaculate High School this past year. First and foremost, I want to highlight the fact that our high school continues to maintain a high level of academic achievement as reflected in our students’ college acceptance rates, our SAT scores, and the overall academic performance and recognition which our students received this past year. This is a reflection of the strength of the faculty and the support of the administration of Immaculate High School. Congratulations to all who have allowed our school to maintain its outstanding academic record.

I also want to report that IHS has received full accreditation from New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). This is an important accomplishment, as it is recognition of many important elements including the school’s strategic vision and mission. It also reflects the work of my fellow members of the advisory board, members of the administration, as well as the faculty and staff who have contributed to the strategic mission of the school; therefore meeting all requirements of full accreditation.

The advisory board, through its executive committee and various committees, has been outstanding in supporting the needs of the school from advising on budget and finance, making recommendations regarding academics, facility improvements, technology, as well as fundraising.

Another major achievement has been the revitalization of our development program, which is critical to the support of a private parochial school in this era of economic stress. A measure of this has been the scope of our fundraising success this past year. Kudos to our Development Committee, led by Anthony Rizzo Jr.; for exceeding all of our budgeted targets. We continue to seek greater involvement of our outstanding alumni in this endeavor.

In closing, I want to thank Mr. Dan Murphy, retiring principal, for his outstanding leadership and support of the students and faculty; and I want to welcome Mr. Joe Carmen, as our new principal. I also want to thank our president Kathleen Casey for her leadership and outstanding achievements during the past year.

As you will see in this report, Immaculate High School has had an outstanding year, and for this there are many people who need to be thanked.

Sincerely,

Gerard D. Robilotti

Introducing our New Principal Joe Carmen

Immaculate High School is pleased to welcome Mr. Joe Carmen as our new school principal. Mr. Carmen was the principal of Our Lady of Fatima School (OLF) in Wil-ton, CT. During his tenure OLF was recognized by the US Department of Educa-tion as a National Blue Rib-bon School of Excellence. Mr. Carmen brings to Im-maculate years of experi-ence as a Principal along with his strong background in classroom instruction. Prior to assuming his role at Our Lady of Fatima, Mr. Carmen was a teacher leader and science educator in the Bridgeport Public Schools, where he led efforts in school reform and instruc-tional improvement. He was the recipient of the 2007 Beard Excellence in Teach-ing Award, one of the larg-est teaching awards in the nation, for this work in the Bridgeport Public Schools. His experience before be-coming an educator in-volved engineering and leadership roles with Texas Instruments and General Electric. A West Point grad-uate, Mr. Carmen served as an Airborne and Ranger qualified Infantry officer who led soldiers in combat and humanitarian missions around the globe. He com-pleted his graduate studies at Southern Connecticut State University.

Dear Immaculate Faculty and Staff:

Traditions. It is appropriate that Immaculate’s Alumni magazine carry this name because for almost 50 years the tradition of IHS has been to provide students the opportunity for world class development in academics, athletics, the arts and spiritual development. Immaculate continues to produce leaders of conscience who work for the greater good.

Thank you for the warm welcome to IHS. As I embark upon my first year as Principal of Immaculate I am excited to be joining such a wonderful learning community whose leadership team, faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni have a reputation of excellence that goes far beyond these walls.

Many diverse learning experiences will take place for our students this year. Our goal is to continue to challenge our students intellectually, grow them socially and spiritually, while guiding them toward the independent thinking and problem solving required for success after IHS. As we strive to promote development in all aspects of each student’s life we will also strive to develop a student body of good character; students who make good choices and decisions resulting in successful lifetime outcomes.

As always, our students are the reason for your giving and your contributions are monies well spent. Your gifts this past year have allowed us to provide the gift of an Immaculate education to those who would not otherwise have the opportunity. This support also allows us to create margin of excellence programs which make Immaculate so special.

Immaculate High School has always been about excellence. Excellence is evident in our highly-qualified teachers, administration and staff, our students, and our alumni. Excellence, as we know, comes at a very high price and the Immaculate High School community has once again demonstrated its ability to graciously pay that price. Thank you for your continuous support and exceptional generosity to Immaculate High School.

May God continue to bless you and your families.

Regards,

Joe Carmen

Principal

As Principal “Coach” Murphy RetiresOn a beautiful night in June, the faculty and staff of Immaculate High School honored Principal Dan Murphy with an afternoon of golf and a special dinner at the Newtown Golf Club. Members of the Murphy clan and some of Dan’s closest friends were also present as they surprised him with touching speeches and gifts. “Coach Murphy” and his wife Cathy are both members of Im-maculate’s first graduating class of 1966. Their two sons Matt and Mike (and Matt’s wife Deidre) also attended IHS in the ’90s. Dan was principal of the school from April 2009 – June 2011. His daily example to all of us of what a true Mustang is, and how one can “serve” his/her school, will be greatly missed.

Mustangs Welcome International StudentsREPRINTED FROM THE DANBURY NEWSTIMES Eileen Fitzgerald, Staff WriterDecember 23, 2010

The students hail from seven countries on four continents. They range in age from 15 to 17 and are football players, swimmers, math wizards and singers, and speak English learned in their native schools. They’re in honors courses and in sports, clubs and music programs not usually available in their home schools. Thirteen international students -- two each from China, Germany and Spain; four from South Korea, and one each from Portugal, Brazil, and Columbia – attend Immaculate High School in Danbury. They’ll share their traditions and learn new ones during this Christmas sea-son. They say America’s allure reduces their homesickness. “I’ve made some really good friends,” said 16-year-old In Hwa Hong, a South Korean national, who lives with her host family in Brookfield. “We’ll exchange presents and hang out. I think it will be really fun and different.” She spent her freshman year in New Jersey last year and is happy with the American schools. “In Korea, we look at a lot of things, but not very deep. In America, we learn not as much, but it’s very deep,” she said. “I think I can get more opportunity here.” Xinghao Wang, a 17-year-old junior from China, said his host fam-ily in Ridgefield treats him like one of their own, especially since their daughter attends college in Japan. “I had Thanksgiving for the first time and it was really nice,” he said. “I am so moved by what they do for me.” Sixteen-year-old Maria Romero-Calderon has been visited by her parents, two brothers and sister from Spain. “I like it here a lot. I may want to stay. I really like America,” she said. “I like the education. In Spain, it’s really hard and we study a lot, but I don’t remember it. But here, I remember everything.” Immaculate had one international student from China in 2008-09 and two from China in 2009-10, so the current 13 from seven coun-tries is a big step. “This is part of our strategic plan, to bring in international students,’’ Immaculate president Kathleen Casey said. “We wanted the breadth of students from around the world. It gives our kids a true interna-

tional experience.” The re-gional Catholic high school fits what agencies who place international students are looking for, Principal Daniel Murphy said. That means a small school with academic excellence and high scores on students’ college entrance exams. Agencies want to send more students to Immaculate, but they need to find host families. The students’ parents pay their tuition and some agencies give host families a stipend for expenses. “These kids come here so they can go to the best colleges, and our kids get to see what their competition is going to be,’’ Casey said. “They are indepen-dent and mature and have great math and science skills.” China’s Zikang Feng celebrated his 17th birthday Thursday. He’s a junior in his first year at Immaculate, where he was just named math student of the month. He is a member of the school’s swim team and plans to join the tennis team in the spring. In China, he played on the table tennis and badminton teams. “I think I’ll stay here until I gradu-ate,’’ he said. “My parents decided to let me go here. The many AP courses are the main reason I am here.’’ English teacher Marie Hulme said international students enhance the environment for all students. “They have a good work ethic in general. They’re very serious about the purpose they are here,” she said. “They come with a feeling and desire to learn English and the perspective they offer can be very unique.” SeJeong Kim, of South Korea, spent her sophomore year at a public school in Seattle and is in her second year at Immaculate, where she’s a senior. Her host family, the Brauns, have been so welcoming that she’s excited for the holidays, she said. “They bought me a stocking and an ornament with my name. They asked me for a Christmas list. I feel like a part of the family.”

SeJeong Kim ’11 from South Korea and Maria Romero-Calderon ’12 from Spain

Juan Manso ’12 from Spain and Leonardo Pais ’13 from Brazil.

During the 2010-2011 school year, the international student program had 15 students from Asia, Europe

and South America enrolled at IHS.

Spiritual & MoralSpiritual & MoralIHS students served more than 17,000 community service hours this year. In addition to participating in school-sponsored service activities such as Midnight Runs and Student Ambassador duties, they reached

out into our communities and served as volunteers at the Special Olympics, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Pope John Paul Rehabilitation Center, Bethel Health Care Center, Morning Glory

Breakfast Program and many other worthwhile parish and community activities. Mass was celebrated on a daily basis and all-school Masses were held on a monthly basis. Each class enjoyed a day offsite in retreat and several thought-provoking assemblies were held throughout the year. IHS kicked off the school year with a BBQ to welcome our new freshmen and transfer students. The

student council and classes sponsored a freshman social, as well as fall and winter dances. Throughout the year members of a variety of clubs enjoyed one another’s camaraderie while working on

projects that contributed to our greater community.

the 21st century classroom21st Century Learning represents a paradigm shift in education and at Immaculate High School. It is bold. It breaks the mold. It is flexible, creative, challenging, and complex. It addresses a rapidly changing world filled with fantastic new problems as well as exciting new possibilities. The 21st Century Classroom de-velops the “whole person” and builds upon IHS’s tradition of being a world class learning environment.

Immaculate High School offers courses in collabora-tion with Virtual High School. Virtual High School is a nonprofit organization based in Maynard, Massachu-setts and serves as portal through which schools and teachers throughout the world offer online courses. By working with VHS, we have access to an extensive list of accredited courses. This will allow us to expand our offerings and include courses we could not otherwise make available to our students.

Teacher Lynne Lemme watches as Michael Setaro ’10 works on a math problem using a SMART Board.

Mobi™ is the first mobile interactive whiteboard designed to support student-centered active learning and give educators the mobility and flexibility to deliver engaging lessons from anywhere in the room. The Mobi™ Work-space™ software allows educators to write, draw, insert images, highlight, interact with, and annotate over instruc-tional content projected onto any surface. Educators at Immaculate began using the Mobi™ in the classroom during 2010-2011.

MEET THE GIRLS HEAD SOCCER COACH

AND ALUMNUS NELSON MINGACHOS ’89Did you know the girls head soccer coach Nelson Mingachos has been part of Immaculate family before he even donned a Mustang uniform? Although he attended Immaculate from 1986-1989, he really became a fellow Mustang prior to his freshmen year when he attended the Mustang Basketball Camp as a camper. A few years after graduation, he became the Freshman Basketball Coach (1995-1997), then JV Basketball Coach for the next 6 years. Since 2005, he has been Head Varsity Basketball Coach. As our Varsity Girls Soccer Head Coach since 2005, he has led the team to an impressive 7 CIAC Class S State Championships (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010), two CIAC Class S Semi Finalist (2002 & 2007). Coach Mingachos been named the Danbury News Times “Coach of the Year” (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009), South West Conference Coach of the Year (2008, 2009), The Connecticut Girls Soccer Association Coach of the Year (2008), NCSAA New England Coach of the Year in 2009, NCSAA National Finalist Coach of the Year in 2009, and Doc McInerney Coach of the Year Award by the Writers Alliance in 2010. He was inducted into the Immaculate Hall of Fame in 2000. Inspirations: “I always speak to the influence my coaches had on my life. Dan Murphy, Bob Nelson and Bob Plumb are a huge part of the person I am today. They taught me integrity, patience and molded me into a respectful young man. These are values I try to instill in my players today. I have been fortunate enough to work side by side with Bob Nelson working as his JV coach, and currently working with Bob Plumb on the basketball court.” Why Immaculate? “I tell everyone that I bleed Mustang Blue! I have had many offers to coach at other local high schools but feel it is my time to give back and cannot imagine being anywhere else. This is a great place to be.” Coach Mingachos is married to wife Kellie. They have two daughters, Isabella and Sophia.

What Immaculate Means to Me...“I consider myself fortunate to have graduated from Immaculate. My parents made many sacrifices to ensure I was able to attend Immaculate and I am eternally grate-ful for their love and foresight. To this day, I continue to rely on the knowledge and skills I developed while at Immaculate. Immaculate’s challenging curriculum, caring faculty and Catholic values helped me get started on the road to life-long learning. Immaculate challenged me to become a leader of character and to appreciate and prac-tice the qualities of courage, competence, commitment and candor.” LTC ANDY MORGADO ’90

“My name is Megan Mitchell and I am an Immaculate High School 2010 graduate currently attending Emerson College for Broadcast Journalism. Immaculate High School has not only pointed me in the right direction, but started me off and guided me through this path to-wards a bright future. Because Immaculate allowed me to do so many different activities such as lacrosse, the musicals, student council, etc., I was able to jump right into the swing of things at college. The faculty and staff at Immaculate not only taught me so much in the classroom, but they also gave great access to me whenever I needed help. At Immaculate, I was always encouraged to pursue my dreams by creating videos and broadcasts for the school, which gave me experience when auditioning for television and radio shows at my

school. I have also grown tremendously in my spirituality at Immaculate. The values I learned from Immaculate as well as the curriculum and spiritual life opportunities, have been a key asset to my growing relationship with God. I implement these values in everyday life which has helped me communicate effectively with others, as well as deal with any type of situation. Immaculate High School has shaped me in such a positive way and I love knowing that I will always be a part of this fantastic family.” MEGAN MITCHELL ’10, EMERSON COLLEGE

“There are many decisions parents need to make as their child reaches each milestone. For my husband and I, the best educational and spiritu-al decision we made was to send our three children to Immaculate High School. From the moment we entered the school we felt as though we were part of an extended family, each person working side-by-side to insure our child’s success. There is continual support whether it is as simple as con-firming an early dismissal to an unsure parent or as complex as providing step-by-step guidance through the college application process including the many scholarship opportunities that may be available. Our children also experience this support from their teachers and guidance counselors. Their teachers want them to succeed and encourage them to come by before school or after school to clarify any questions they may have. In addition, they value and work hard to develop a well-rounded person. Not only are our children encouraged to join extra –curricular activities, but they are motivated and made aware of the need to give back to their community. Having three children with very different interests and talents, my husband and I found that Immaculate was able to offer activities with such variety that our children are involved year round. We also have had the opportunity to see ‘first-hand’ the excellent education that Immaculate High offers as a college preparatory school. Our oldest child, now a freshman in college, had many college doors opened to him and was offered many scholarships. His academic and social success after his first semester of college is a credit to how well Immaculate prepared him both academically and spiritually for this next milestone. As par-ents who have many decisions to make as our children grow, sending our children to Immaculate High School definitely has been one of our best decisions!” DONNA LASCO, PARENT ’10, ’12, ’14

BACKGROUND: I graduated from Fairfield University with a degree in Finance in 1987.

CAREER & FAMILY HIGHLIGHTS: While at Fairfield I had the chance to travel to France for a full year and became Editor-in-Chief of the campus newspaper “The Mirror” during my senior year. After graduation, I joined Salomon Brothers and stayed for 22 years as they merged into Salomon Smith Barney and then Citigroup. My responsibilities were always in trading and investing in Emerging Markets with most of my time spent in Asia. I have lived in Hong Kong or Tokyo since 1990. In 1999, I was promoted to Managing Director in charge of propriety investments for Private Equity, Real Estate and Distressed Debt in Asia for Citigroup. The unit invested in small and medium sized companies such as BMW car dealerships in China, oil exploration in Indonesia, and ski resorts in Japan. I met my wife Mieko in Tokyo. We have three wonderful children: Suzuran 3, Rikto 2 and May 1. They keep us very busy and make long airplane rides quite interesting. We live most of the year in Tokyo but spend our summer in Connecticut. We think the northeast has the best weather on the planet from June to September.

FAVORITE IHS STUDENT MEMORIES: As a student I loved going to Immaculate. You were welcome and encouraged to participate and be active. There was a sincere mutual respect of students and expectations that they would act responsibly which they did for the most part. I loved participating in sports. We had a very successful Mock Trial Club then which might be a forerunner to today’s debating teams. We were in the state tournament three years in a row and lost in the finals in 1980. We worked months and months and beat teams from prep schools and big high schools across the state. We were definitely the underdog but we had dedication and the support of some great teachers (Mr. Rinaldi and Mr. Genova) and the local attorney Dave Bennett. What a neat experience for high school students.

INSPIRATION: I left Immaculate feeling great about my friendships, what I’d learned and accomplished. It was time to go but sad to depart. The most important thing I always felt was that teachers and administrators cared; that they had a real interest in the students and their suc-cess and earnestness to teach and encourage and to forgive and forget when that was also called for.

SUPPORTING IHS: I want other young people to have as much fun and feel the satisfaction that comes with accomplishment and handling responsibility. I want them to have great friendships, to be in a positive and healthy environment that cares about them as people. It left me with confidence, a work ethic and humble appreciation of how much others had done for me.

ScholarshipsThe gift of education is one of the greatest and most enduring gifts that can be given. We are extremely grate-ful to our benefactors for their overwhelming generosity. There are many parishes, trusts, and individuals who provide tuition assistance, some of whom are highlighted below.

David R. Couch Education Foundation Scholarship bears the name of its benefactor who taught at Immaculate High School for 35 years. Over the past three years, the David R. Couch Education Foundation has provided fund-ing for over 45 half-tuition needs-based scholarships at Immaculate High School.

The Dr. Ian Smith Scholarships are merit- and need-based partial scholarships awarded to incoming IHS freshmen and graduating seniors. Dana Smith, Ian’s twin brother, came to the 2011 Baccalaureate celebration to present the scholarship award.

George Landegger provides $6,500.00 annual scholarships for six St. Peter/Sacred Heart students who attend Im-maculate High School.

The family of Ben Bisbano hosts an annual golf tournament. Proceeds from the tournament provide funding for the Ben Bisbano scholarships which are awarded to an incoming freshman and a graduating senior.

Many of our parishes provide IHS spiritual support as well as financial support through annual collections. Above, Monsignor Weiss celebrates Mass with IHS students from St. Rose parish.

A longtime supporter, Isabelle Farrington’s generous donation to Faith in the Future has been providing funding for merit-based academic scholarships.

On behalf of the students who were given tuition assis-tance awards, we thank all of our donors for providing Angel Aid and scholarships. Your gifts made it possible for more students to attend immaculate High School. Thank you for giving the gift of educa-tion…a gift that lasts a lifetime.
