IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS JANUARY 2017 LCMC Days of Prayer, January 3-5 One of the priorities for LCMC is to make prayer the first response rather than the last resort of the Church. So every year LCMC calls Immanuel to start the new year with three days of focused prayer. Day 1 is for confession. We pray for God's forgiveness for our failure to be the Church Je- sus called us to be. Day 2 is for petition. We pray for the "daily bread" needs of our families, our congregation, our community, and our world. Day 3 is for vision. We pray for God's Holy Spirit to move through the Church in renewal and revival, to fire us up to see God's vision and be filled with God's passion for the world. We invite you to take time each of these 3 days to join with our LCMC partners around the world in prayer. 9 th Annual Danish Dolls Aebelskiver/Frikadeller Dinner, Jan. 21 Join us for Aebelskiver and Frikadeller from 5 to 7 PM on Saturday, January 21. The freewill dona- tion for dinner and a bake sale with many Danish goodies will benefit the scholarship fund for mis- sion trips to Tanzania. ILC Annual Congregational Meeting, Sunday, January 29 All confirmed members and interested guests are encouraged to attend the ILC Annual Congrega- tional meeting. It is a great opportunity to learn about what is going on behind the scenes at Imman- uel Lutheran Church and to talk together about the future of Immanuel. The meeting will take place in the fellowship hall at 10:15 AM. Annual reports are due Tuesday, January 10. The Story Continues In January we are working through chapter 23 of "The Story". Page 2 IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS

Dear Friends in Christ, When we fail to spend time in prayer, we are in denial about our need for God. A lack of prayer is a clear indication that we think we don't really need God. The church in the United States, for all its large size and incredible resources, seems rather weak compared to the church in other parts of the world. Perhaps we suffer from a lack of prayer. If prayer is conversation with the Almighty, then prayer is our connection to the power that created the world and can save the world today. Prayer is hard work because it requires a deep honesty and exploration of our hearts and minds. When we are talking to the One who knows us best, we can't get by with a few minutes of superfi-cial "Hi, God, how are you? I'm fine, thank you." Prayer takes time and persistence and effort. The Holy Spirit can interpret our groans as prayers, but that doesn't excuse us from being lazy in prayer. We can deny that we need to be in worship at least once a week. But we would be lying to our-selves. Just like I lie to myself when I say I don't have to watch what I eat. I appear healthy, but I could feel so much better if I avoided some of what I eat. So we may feel pretty good, but we could be so much stronger and deeper spiritually if we watched what we consume spiritually. We need weekly worship. It is the easiest part of being a Christian. If we don't do that, we will not be able to do the harder work of denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following him. If we don't do that, our prayer life will never become what we need. Don't just join a church. Join the cause. Join the mission. Use the Church to help you be about the mission that God has for you in life. Jesus has called his people to be part of a rescue opera-tion pulling out people who have been buried by the debris of sin and oppression. We have shrunk Jesus down to a size where he can save our soul but he can't save the world. But Jesus came to save the world. The Church doesn't exist to serve me or you. The Church doesn't even exist to serve the commu-nity around us. No, the Church exists to serve Jesus, to do what Jesus wants us to do. The Church doesn't belong to us. It belongs to Jesus. This month, LCMC challenges us to reorient ourselves and our church with 3 days of focused prayer. The purpose is not to put in our prayer requirement for the year. The purpose is to get our prayer life powered up for 2017. I need it. You need it. Immanuel Lutheran Church needs it. So take a prayer walk on those days. Or come sit in the sanctuary at Immanuel. Or find some time alone at home. And begin with a question, "God, what would you like us to talk about?" Read a little Scripture, give God what is on your mind, and listen to God's Spirit within you. Then share with me or someone else what you hear from God. Yours in Christ, Phil Nielsen

The Harvest Connection Seminar

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, our LCMC partner in Audubon, Iowa, will be the host for a great opportunity to grow in faith and in our understanding of God's mission in the world today. Pastor, teacher, and author Bill Moberly will lead The Harvest Con-nection seminar on Saturday, January 28, from 8:30 to 1 pm. Southwest Iowa churches and community members are invited to join together when Bill will help us explore three critical questions: What does the Bible really say about the global mission of Christian congregations? What remains to be done to fulfill Je-sus' Great Commission to go and make disciples of all nations? And what does this mean for our life and our congregations? Bill's presentation will open our eyes and awaken our lives to the big picture of what God is doing in the world and how we are part of that work. Bill Moberly is Founder and Director of Awakening Lives to World Missions. He is Di-rector of Outreach and Development for China Service Ventures. He is author of Ig-niting a Passion for Missions. You are encouraged to participate. There is a $10 fee to help cover materials and lunch. Preregistration is appreciated. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the hallway if you are interested in a joining a group from Immanuel for the morning.

COUNCIL MEETING SUMMARY December 13, 2016—7 pm

13 of 16 council members and the pastor attended. Steve Allen opened the meeting with a devotion from "Jesus Calling".

The Treasurer reported that YTD income at the end of November was $233,731 and YTD expenses were $234,222 with a net deficit of 491. November's income was unusually low. The roof debt was at $15,520. Council decided to authorize paying off the roof debt if we have sufficient funds in our gen-eral fund at the end of the year so that we can start 2017 with no debt.

The Executive Committee recommended a 2017 budget proposal of $275,860 which is an increase of less than 1 percent over 2016. Council approved the budget proposal to be presented to the congre-gation at the annual meeting.

Mission/Outreach reported that January mission support would go to LCMC. Also, they plan to pre-pare a survey for the annual meeting to receive input from members about which mission partners we are called to support. They are also looking for volunteers to help with Hero's Attic on January 14, 9 to noon.

Worship will be developing a job description for a volunteer wedding coordinator committee.

Property reviewed the report on the annual roof inspection. Two patches were repaired. Otherwise the roof looked good. More LED lights have been ordered to finish bulb replacement in the sanctuary.

Executive Committee appointed themselves as the Long Range Planning Committee and will use a congregational evaluation survey through Natural Church Development. They also purchased a time clock to help track employee payroll.

Nominating Committee is still searching for two council positions: Education and Mission/Outreach or Treasurer. The Church council is recommending that the Stewardship Committee not be continued in 2017. The duties of the Stewardship Committee would be absorbed by the Pastor and the Execu-tive Committee.

Annual Meeting Note: The Church Council is recommending amendments to the constitution of Im-manuel Lutheran Church to be voted on at the 2017 Annual Meeting and ratified at the 2018 Annual Meeting. The amendments are as follows:

Amend 11.01 to delete "Stewardship" from the list of co-chairs of official committees who serve on church council. The result is to reduce the membership of the church council from 16 to 14.

Amend 13.01 to delete ""Stewardship" from the official committees of the congregation.
