Implant Retained Dentures

Implant retained dentures issignificantly higher pricedthan standard dentures, they present the benefit ofallowing upper dentures to be created in the shape of an arch instead of having to cover the entire palate. This is of special importanceto people who have severe gagging reflexes,

and probably could not wer fulldentures because of that. A full set of implants can be expensivefor many people, however, a min-imum of two implants can retain a lower denture, which may not havebeen tolerated by that patient other-wise. Generally speaking, more than two implants are required forupper implant retained dentures.

Implant retained dentures are also of particular value to patients who cannot wear lower dentures. As a toothless patient ages, and the bonecontinues to resorb, lower ridges often fade away entirely. This leavesno vertical bone underneath the gumsto steady a lower denture. The placement of just two implants in thefront of the lower jaw can makeit possible to retain a lower denture, which would otherwise not be possible for the patient to endure.

When should my dentures need to be replaced ?

Over time, artificial dentures will need to be relined or rebased, this is due to normal wear. In the Gentle-dentist to reline an existing denture, the artificial teeth are refited. Dentures may need to be replaced sometimes,if they become too loose and the artifi-cial teeth show signs of significant wear. Dentures become loose because a mouth naturally changes with age.

surrounding bone and gum ridges can recede or shrink, causing jaws to align unproperly and finally causing the denture to fall off. Shrinking ridges can also cause dentures to fit less securely, and also cause health problems including sores and infections. A loose denture also makes chewing more diffi-cult and may change your facial features. It's important to replace worn or poorlyfitting dentures before they cause problems.

Selecting a balanced diet for propernutrition is also important for maintaining a healthy mouth.

How long should I wear my dentures?

During the first few days, you may be advised to wearthem most of the time, including while you sleep. Afterthe initial adjustment period, you may be instructed to remove the dentures before going to bed. This allows gum tissues to rest and promotes oral health.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Dentures are very delicate and may break if dropped even a few inches. When you are not wearingthem, store your dentures in a glass of water. Like natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily to removefood deposits and plaque. Brushing helps prevent dentures from becoming permanently stained and helps your mouthand gums stay healthy. It's best to use a brush designed forcleaning dentures. A toothbrush with soft bristles can also beused. Avoid using hard-bristled brushes that can damage dentures. Some denture wearers use hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid, which are both acceptable forcleaning dentures. Avoid using other powdered household cleansers, which may be too abrasive.

Page 13: Immediate Denture

The first step in cleaning dentures is to rinse away loose food particles thoroughly. Moisten thebrush and apply denture cleanser. Brush every surface, scrubbing gently to avoid damage.Dentures may lose their shape if they are allowed to dry out. When they are not worn, dentures should be placed in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water. Your dentist can recommend the best method. Never place dentures in hot water, which could cause them to warp.Ultrasonic cleaners are also used to care for dentures. However, using an ultrasonic cleaner doesnot replace a thorough daily brushing.

Can I make minor adjustments or repairs to my dentures?

You can seriously damage your dentures and harm your health by trying to adjust or repair your dentures. A denture that is not made to fit properly can cause irritation and sores.See your dentist if your dentures break, crack, chip, or if one of the teeth becomes loose. A dentistcan often make the necessary adjustments or repairs on the same day. A person who lacks the proper training will not be able to reconstruct the denture. This can cause greater damage to the denture and may cause problems in your mouth. Glue sold over-the-counter often contains harmful chemicals and should not be used on dentures.
