Immigration to America
before the Civil War was
moderate due to the
expense and difficulty of
travel.
During the Civil War there was hardly any Immigration
After the Civil War
ended Immigration picked up again and
many came to America
In the 50 years before before the Civil War about 5 million immigrants came to America
In the 50 years following the War 25 million people
came to America
One of the reasons Immigration picked up is Steam Boats. Passage on one of these boats
across the Atlantic was about $10-$15.
Where The Immigrants Came From

Great Britain, Iceland and Scandinavia

Many of the cities and the infrastructure of American Civilization
(roads, railroads, buildings, water and sewer systems) were
built by Immigrant Labor
The railroad was built mainly by Irish and Chinese Immigrants
