    Introduction:

You are going back in time to explore the immigration process at Ellis Island! You

have been learning how America is often referred to as a melting potand now

you will get the opportunity to explore why this is. I know we have been studying

immigration and now you will get the chance to dive in deeper! Did you know that

between 1820 and 1924 over 35 million people came to America? These people

went through many difficulties and hardships that we cannot even imagine. Letsfind out what some of these were!

    Task:

A fun part about history is to see how something that happened at one time can

affect events at another time. As you know immigration is an ongoing process stilltoday. In this case, you will explore what immigrants went through to get to

America. They arrived at Ellis Island, where they were inspected and had to pass

many tests before they could come to the United States. I will divide you into four

groups of six to learn about some of these experiences. Each member in the

group will be given a number and be required to look up a vocabulary word that

will be used for discussions. Then different steps will be followed in each group to

experience life as an immigrant on Ellis Island. Group work is essential, so make

sure you work together in this journey.

    Process:

Each person in the group will need to look up one word individually and then

share its meaning in the discussion area set for your group. As a group, discuss

the meaning of these words and use them throughout this process. Each

particular group will experience a part of Ellis Island and complete its own project.

Group 1 will experience the various places the immigrants had to go and create a

conversation through a live chat. Group 2 will learn about personal stories and

develop a summary through a video chat. Group 3 will learn about the various

nationalities that came to Ellis Island and create a timeline in Google Docs. Group

4 will explore how the immigrants were treated based on their social class and

create a skit using VoiceThread. Each project will reflect a different aspect of what

immigrants went through when arriving at Ellis Island.

    Group 1

    Step One-

Each person chooses a number below, look up your word and create a definition.

    1. Authorities

    2. Exclusion

    3. Deport

    4. Immigration

    5. Visa

    6. Inspection

    Step Two-

Share your definition in the Group 1 discussion area. Discuss how you think it

could relate to immigrants arriving in America.

    Step Three- Live Chat

Imagine that you have been transported through time right to Ellis Island. Youhave to pass inspection at baggage and registration, then go through an interview

and get a medical examination to make it to America. Everything you own, you

are carrying. Your group will create a conversation through a live chatabout what

may have taken place while in line at one of these places. Use the vocabulary

terms you just learned to guide you as well as your internet researching skills. This

conversation is between two immigrants standing in line waiting to come to

America, remember there are inspectors watching you.Make sure to includenames and dialogue. What kinds of things are you seeing? Is it family who is

talking or immigrants that do not know each other? Is one being deported?Research and be creative! It must be at least 2 paragraphs long.

Step Four- One person will share conversation in Immigration Discussion area. All

groups will post their final project here. Every person in the group will make a

reply to the post expressing what you felt while researching and writing the

    conversation.

    Group 2

    Step One-

Each person chooses a number below, look up your word and create a definition.

    1. Newcomer

    2. Ferry

    3. Disease

    4. Ellis Island

    5. Deformity

    6. Hardship

    Step Two-

Share your definition in the Group 2 discussion area. Discuss how you think it

could relate to immigrants arriving in America.

    Step Three- Video Chat

You will read personal stories to learn about real experiences on this journey. This

includes childrens stories as well. When you think about immigrants coming to

America you may first think of adults, but there were children who made their

way as well. You will also be able to read stories of children who have arrived

recently. Compare and contrast the differences and as a group you will video chat

to create a written summary of these experiences. Include similarities and

differences you found from the people. What was interesting to you about the

childrens own personal stories? Can you imagine doing this?

    Step Four-

Share your summary to the class by having one person post it in the Immigration

Discussion area. All groups will post their final project here. Every member of the

group will reply to the post to tell the rest of the class what you learned about the

children and what really stuck out to you.

    Group 4

    Step One-

Each person chooses a number below, look up your word and create a definition.

    1. Steerage

    2. Social Class

    3. Elite

    4. Assimilate

    5. Verification

    6. Equality

    Step Two-

Share your definition in the Group 4 discussion area. Discuss how you think it

could relate to immigrants arriving in America.

    Step Three- VoiceThread

You will now explore what it was like to come to America as different socialclasses. Pay attention to how each one was treated and if you think it was fair.

Think about how these social classes are seen today and be prepared to give

some examples. If you have more money will you get better treatment? Using the

words to help guide you create a skit using VoiceThread. Represent what it might

be like for first class, second class, and the steerage class at Ellis Island. Will you

divide your group into the social classes? Will one of you be an inspector?

    Step Four-

You will now share your skit with the class by having one person post it in the

Immigration Discussion area. All groups will post their final project here. Every

member of the group must reply to this post and discuss how social classes are

represented today. Role playing allows you to imagine what it was like for some

    of these people.

    Evaluation:

Students, you will be graded on how well you contributed to your group and how

you worked together online. I am looking for positive attitudes and collaboration.Make sure you manage your time and be respectful to each member of your

groups time. Your research and the quality of your finished products are also

essential. As long as you work hard and do what you are supposed to in

completing this project you will do great! See theRubricfor details.

    Conclusion:

Well students it has been a long and hard journey being an immigrant, but you

were amazing! I hope you will remember some of the actual hardships

immigrants went through to get to America. The different groups projects were

to not only show the diversity of what happened, but also how we relate to that

diversity today. Immigration was a huge deal and has made America what it is

today, a melting potof so many different people. People who came to America

did it because they truly believed in it, so remember to always stand up for what

    you believe in!

arriver at Ellis Island so many years ago.

Objective: Students will work in groups to explore immigration by creating

    projects using various technologies.

    Standards: Students will:

-Utilize live chat, video chat, Google docs, and VoiceThread

-Identify and discuss immigrant obstacles and examine immigrant status

-Reflect on personal feelings or emotions going along with being a new comer
