impact

With a new strategic plan as our guide, we have spent the first year of my tenure as dean redefining the George Mason University School of Business experience. It has been a year of substantive changes with a singular focus, our students.

In a short period, we•created the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which serves as a central hub of entrepreneurship education and innovation activity at the university

•opened the Mason Innovation Lab, which provides mentorship, physical space, and stipends for student teams to develop their business ideas

•redesigned our undergraduate curriculum so our students can develop stronger professional and quantitative skills and have more experiential learning opportunities

•made a home for our graduate and executive education programs on Mason’s Arlington Campus that offers a graduate student lounge, breakout rooms, conference room and faculty and staff offices

Also notable is our change in name to School of Business. We are undergoing a significant transformation as a business school and our new name better represents the breadth of our programs and expertise and the community we serve. As we move into a new era as the School of Business, we look to the community that we serve for support to sustain the momentum we have built during the past year.

Donors like you—who give your time, money, or expertise—enable us to deliver a high-impact, experiential business education to our students, launch initiatives designed to weave innovation and entrepreneurship into all aspects of our programs, provide meaningful financial assistance to our students, attract and retain top faculty and staff, and support our network of alumni.

Thank you for your continued support.

Message from the Dean

FUNDING PRIORITIES

Sarah E. NutterDean

Annual Support provides a critical source of expendable capital that enables us to remain competitive, flexible, and

innovative by responding to changing circumstances and taking advantage of new opportunities.

Student Experience and Financial Aid investments allow us to fulfill the university’s top priority—providing students

with a transformational learning experience that helps them grow as individuals, scholars, and professionals.

Faculty Enrichment and Research Funding contributions drive the innovative research and inspired teaching that are

integral components of a relevant curriculum in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape.

Academic Excellence and Programmatic Support gifts serve to sustain and expand student programming as well as

community and global outreach efforts.

Fall2014

In November 2013, Dean’s Advisory Council member Kristina Bouweiri made a bold move by establishing a fund to support the work of Mason’s Women in Business Initiative. Together with Guylaine Saint Juste, she took her philanthropy further by building a consortium of prominent women willing and able to take the Women in Business Initiative to the next level.

“I hope this group will be a great resource for students, alumni, and local businesswomen. We hope to create mentoring, networking, and business opportunities. We hope to fund scholarships to support exceptional female students and raise capital to send a Mason cohort to the Global Summit of Women,” says Bouweiri.

On August 1, 2014, the newly formed consortium comprising Mason alumni and friends representing a variety of industries came together to think through the initiative’s role in the university’s ten-year strategic plan.

Armed with actionable goals, the consortium hit the ground running to accomplish much in a few short months, including sponsoring a group of students to attend the National Association of Women MBAs annual career fair, serving as guest speakers in School of Business classrooms, and providing intellectual stimulation and professional development to the community through a series of events.

With the help of alumni, donors, and consortium members alike, the influence of the Women in Business Initiative will only grow in serving as an access point for recruiting top-performing Mason students, a network of innovation and collaboration, a hub for lifelong learning, and a provider of business insight in support of women in the workplace.

Spotlight on our Champions

STAFFSPOTLIGHTJean-Pierre Auffret Director, Executive Degree Programs

As director of executive degree programs at the School of Business, Jean-Pierre (J.P.) Auffret has employed his 30 years of technology industry and academic experience to grow the MS in Technology Management and MS in Management of Secure Information Systems programs.

Though he is instrumental in growing both executive degree programs, Auffret’s research interests in CIO and IT executive leadership, development and application of emerging technologies, and eGovernment drive him to push the success of the MS in Technology Management program in particular. As one of the founding partners of the U.S. Government’s CIO University, the program’s success lies in its location in one of the most dynamic technology regions in the United States and in its partnerships with many local, innovative technology firms.

Auffret knows the success of the program is dependent on all those supporting it and makes a point of nurturing those relationships to achieve sustainable growth. Learn more about Dr. Auffret at business.gmu.edu/jpauffret.

STUDENTSPOTLIGHTJ. Scott BauerMason Innovation Lab Participant

Since its conception, the smartphone has become such an integral part of daily life that many don’t know what they would do without it. However, there are still instances when having your smartphone accessible just isn’t practical or safe. But now, thanks to the invention of two members of the Mason Innovation Lab, people will have to say goodbye to their beloved phones even less frequently.

Scott Bauer, a graduate student concentrating on social entrepreneurship at George Mason University, and his friend turned business partner, Jimmy Rogers, created OnYou, a magnetic smartphone case designed for runners, cyclists, gym-goers, and other active people.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have amazing people helping us, many of them professors at George Mason and members of Mason’s business community. Any success we have will be due to the contributions of many and we’re extremely grateful for the continued support.” Read the full story at business.gmu.edu/onyou.

ALUMNISPOTLIGHTBrian E. Kearney, ’02COO, Kearney & Company

In the third grade, Brian Kearney began working for the family business making copies of tax returns. Seventeen years later, as he began his college search, he sought a university that would enable him to continue working while getting a formal education. For Kearney, Mason’s proximity to home and flexibility in scheduling made for a perfect fit.

Since graduating from Mason in 2002, Kearney has become chief operating officer at Kearney & Company. As an executive, he found his Mason experience to be one of inspiration when seeking opportunities to enrich the community. Knowing firsthand the challenges and sacrifice that come with the need to work through college, he decided to establish the Kearney & Company Scholarship at Mason’s School of Business.

The scholarship seeks to support an exceptional junior or senior accounting student with academic merit and a passion for civic service who has maintained a job while pursuing his/her degree. In Kearney’s mind, “Allow me to support you financially so you have the ability to focus on your studies.” Find out more about Brian Kearney and the scholarship at business.gmu.edu/kearney.

FRIENDSPOTLIGHTSteven B. AlloyPresident, Stanley Martin Companies

When asked to get involved with the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship (CREE) as a board member, Steve Alloy enthusiastically accepted. As a classic entrepreneur with a passion for real estate having started half a dozen real estate companies in the national capital region, the opportunity with CREE provided him with the chance to give back to the community and help foster the next generation of developers and

real estate entrepreneurs.

Having developed communities for more than 10,000 families, Alloy has a commitment to excellence in community and home design as well as energy efficiency and sustainability. He hopes to share his experiences in leading large real estate organizations and in creating entrepreneurial value will benefit current and future students. He also hopes to help George Mason create one of the most notable real estate programs in the country. Read more about Steve Alloy and CREE at business.gmu.edu/alloy.
