The Capital Area Immigrants' Rights

Coalition strives to ensure equal justice for

all immigrant adults and children at risk of

detention and deportation in the Capital

region and beyond through direct legal

representation, Know Your Rights

presentations, impact litigation, advocacy,

and the enlistment and training of

attorneys to defend immigrants.

DETAINED ADULT PROGRAM

The Detained Adult Program provides general information

about immigration processes, support in making informed

decisions, and as often as possible, direct legal representation

to noncitizens facing deportation while they are held inside

ICE detention centers.

DETAINED CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

The Detained Children's Program provides Know Your Rights

presentations, legal counsel, and social services to

immigrant children who entered the United States without

their parents and who are detained by the Office of Refugee

Resettlement. These children include toddlers, pregnant

teens and teen moms, and children in long-term foster care.

OUR PROGRAMS

IMMIGRATION IMPACT LAB

The Immigration Impact Lab is CAIR Coalition's appellate and

federal litigation project. Through the Lab, CAIR Coalition can

respond proactively to the injustices we witness every day

through appeals and class-action lawsuits that have the

potential to improve immigration laws for large numbers of

immigrants.

Shout out to Freddie Mac, whose in-house legal department took on 10 cases in 2019 for 8 different clients!

Most recently, a team at Freddie Mac secured an impactful victory for Carlos,* a38-year-old father and long-time resident of the United States. Carlos' wife,Teresa,* is sick, and relies on Carlos to be the primary breadwinner andcaretaker of both her and their daughter. Freddie Mac's team wasted no time.They put together beautiful arguments detailing how Carlos qualified for notjust one defense to deportation, but two unique defenses to deportation,essentially fighting two cases at once. In the final moments of 2019, the judge granted Carlos withholding ofremoval! He can now stay in the United States, safely and permanently, andfocus on providing for his daughter and wife. Carlos said he was lookingforward to getting home so he can drive his daughter to school and cook mealsfor his family. Congratulations and thank you to all the amazing pro bono attorneys that arecentral to the CAIR Coalition team!

CAIR Coalition is proud to be a plaintiff and co-counsel on amajor lawsuit challenging President Trump's rule barring asylumfor individuals who enter or attempt to enter across the southernborder, if they did not seek protection from a third country while

en route to the United States.

As stated in the complaint, the rule “radically rewrites” the lawsgoverning asylum eligibility. CAIR Coalition is proud to unite with

RAICES and Hogan Lovells to challenge this injustice.
