America become a world power.

Economic and military competition from other nations, as well as a growing feeling of cultural superiority led to this shift.

This expansion became known as the New imperialism.

Imperialism is the economic and political domination of a strong nation over other weaker nations.

Economic Reasons

Number one motive was economic

Colonies had natural resources to help factories at home.

Colonies served as a market for manufactured goods.

Industrialized nations produced more manufactured goods than their people could buy.

Political Reasons Build an empire

Every country wanted a larger empire than competing countries.

National hegemony and pride-idea that a country’s greatness was measured by the quantity and quality of its colonies.

Recognition as a world power-America wanted to increase their political power and prestige-respect from other countries.

Military Reasons America wanted clear military advantage over other

countries.

Colonies can also serve as a fueling station for the Navy. (a place where ships can stop and load on supplies.)

Wanted a stronger navy-The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783- (Alfred Thayer Mahan-All major empires had a strong navy)

Cultural Reasons Social Darwinism had swept through nation. Idea that only

the strongest countries would prevail, and the strongest nations would have the most colonies and imperialistic power.

Racial and cultural superiority.

“White Man’s Burden”-Kipling wrote poem about it was the duty of white people to enlighten and uplift the African and Asian people of the world.

Religious Reasons Idea that Christianity is superior to all other religions-

Americans must spread Christianity to other countries.

Only true way to spread Christianity is to acquire territory from other countries.
