    Importance of Indian Cows

    cow milk:

India is a predominantly vegetarian nation.

Traditionally milk has always been a favorite part

    of diet all over India.

( Modern Nutrition science informs that there are

some important proteins for human nutrition

which can be made available only from animal

sources. This could be the basic reason as to whyin the Indian traditions of vegetarian diets allow

Milk and its products as essential for human

    diets.

!f late diabetes" heart disease "bone and #oints

related diseases particularly in ladies have

assumed epidemic proportion of growth in the

Indian population. This situation has manifested

itself more in urban areas due to widespread

supply of milk from crossbred high yielding cows

$uropean cows" and buffalos" instead of Indian

breeds of cows. The %rban life style of more

indoor living also results in little e&posure to

natural sun light. This causes 'itamin deficiency. 'itamin deficiency is now recogni)ed

to be directly related in poor bioavailability of

essential minerals like Calcium for skeletal health.

. Modern medicine is yet discovering the numerous benefits of

naturally produced 'itamin . This is reproduced below:

(Vitamin D Miracles) - quoted from internet

Sunlight and vitamin D are critical to all life forms. Standard

textbooks state that the principal function of vitamin D is to

promote calcium absorption in the gut and calcium transfer across

cell membranes, thus contributing to strong bones and a calm,

contented nervous system. It is also well recognized that vitamin D

aids in the absorption of magnesium, iron and zinc.

Vitamin D also enhances the uptake of toxic metals like lead,

cadmium, aluminum and strontium if calcium, magnesium andphosphorus are not present in adeuate amounts.

!eceptors for vitamin D are found in most of the cells in the body

and research during the "#$%s suggested that vitamin D

contributed to a healthy immune system, promoted muscle

strength, regulated the maturation process and contributed to

    hormone production.

During the last ten years, researchers have made a number of

exciting discoveries about vitamin D. &hey have ascertained, for

example, that vitamin D is an antioxidant that is a more effective

antioxidant than vitamin ' in reducing lipid per oxidation and

increasing enzymes that protect against oxidation.

Vitamin D deficiency decreases biosynthesis and release of insulin.

(lucose intolerance has been inversely associated with the

concentration of vitamin D in the blood. &hus, vitamin D mayprotect against both &ypes I and &ype II diabetes.

&he risk of senile cataract and )acular degeneration with age is

reduced in persons with optimal levels of D and carotenoids.

Vitamin D plays a role in regulation of both the *infectious*

immune system and the *inflammatory* immune system.

+ow vitamin D is associated with several autoimmune diseases

including multiple sclerosis, Sogren-s Syndrome, rheumatoidarthritis, thyroiditis and rohn-s disease.

/steoporosis is strongly associated with low vitamin D.

0ostmenopausal women with osteoporosis respond favorably 1and

rapidly2 to higher levels of D plus calcium and magnesium.

Vitamin D deficiency has been mistaken for fibromyalgia, chronic

    fatigue or peripheral neuropathy.

Infertility is associated with low vitamin D. Vitamin D supports

production of estrogen in men and women. 0)S has been

completely reversed by addition of calcium, magnesium and

vitamin D. )enstrual migraine is associated with low levels of

    vitamin D and calcium.

3reast, prostate, skin and colon cancer have a strong association

with low levels of D and lack of sunlight.

4ctivated vitamin D in the adrenal gland regulates tyrosine

hydroxylase, the rate limiting enzyme necessary for the production

of dopamine, epinephrine and nor epinephrine. +ow D may

contribute to chronic fatigue and depression.

0eople with 0arkinson and 4lzheimer have been found to have

    lower levels of vitamin D.

+ow levels of D, and perhaps calcium, in a pregnant mother and

later in the child may be the contributing cause of *crooked teeth*

and myopia. 5hen these conditions are found in succeeding

generations it means the genetics reuire higher levels of one or

    both nutrients to optimize health.

    7/25

3ehavior and learning disorders respond well to D and6or calcium

combined with an adeuate diet and trace minerals.

    Vitamin D and Heart Disease

!esearch suggests that low levels of vitamin D may contribute to

or be a cause of syndrome 7 with associated hypertension, obesity,

diabetes and heart disease. Vitamin D regulates vitamin8D8binding

proteins and some calcium8binding proteins, which are responsible

for carrying calcium to the *right location* and protecting cells

from damage by free calcium. &hus, high dietary levels of calcium,

when D is insufficient, may contribute to calcification of the

arteries, oints, kidney and perhaps even the brain.

)any researchers have postulated that vitamin D deficiency leads

to the deposition of calcium in the arteries and hence

atherosclerosis, noting that northern countries have higher levels

of cardiovascular disease and that more heart attacks occur in

    winter months.

Scottish researchers found that calcium levels in the hair inversely

correlated with arterial calcium8the more calcium or plaue in thearteries, the less calcium in the hair. 9inety percent of men

experiencing myocardial infarction had low hair calcium. 5hen

vitamin D was administered, the amount of calcium in the beard

went up and this rise continued as long as vitamin D was

consumed. 4lmost immediately after stopping supplementation,

however, beard calcium fell to pre8supplement levels.

4dministration of dietary vitamin D or :V83 treatment has been

shown to lower blood pressure, restore insulin sensitivity andlower cholesterol.

It is no wonder that 7ogic e&ercise of 8urya

Namaskar has always received very high priority

    in Indian tradition .

    The Right Fats

&he assimilation and utilization of vitamin D is influenced by the

kinds of fats we consume. Increasing levels of both

polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids in the diet

decrease the binding of vitamin D to D8binding proteins. Saturated

fats, the kind found in butter, tallow and coconut oil, do not have

this effect. 9or do the omega8; fats. D8binding proteins are key to

local and peripheral actions of vitamin D. &his is an importantconsideration as 4mericans have dramatically increased their

intake of polyunsaturated oils 1from commercial vegetable oils2

and monounsaturated oils 1from olive oil and canola oil2 and

decreased their intake of saturated fats over the past "%% years.

In traditional diets, saturated fats supplied varying amounts of

vitamin D. &hus, both reduction of saturated fats and increase of

polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats contribute to thecurrent widespread D deficiency.

&rans fatty acids, found in margarine and shortenings used in most

commercial baked goods, should always be avoided. &here is

evidence that these fats can interfere with the enzyme systems the

body uses to convert vitamin D in the liver.2
