Explore Pittsburgh's art, architecture and culture scene with visits to iconic places including: Falling Water, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Mattress Factory, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Conservatory, public mural art and a live performance at Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The experience will allow you to explore college and career preparation through an immersion in science, technology, engineering and math. Trainees undergo a variety of astronaut training exercises (1/6th Gravity Chair, Multi-Axis Trainer, SCUBA in the Underwater Astronaut Trainer), engineering challenges (Design, build and launch a rocket and safely recover its payload, construct a heat shield, build a rover), and teambuilding activities, all culminating in an extended-duration simulated space mission. The program is a college-accredited program through the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Students will earn one hour of freshman-level general science credit that can be transferred to another college. Students are responsible for souvenirs and lunch.

The Great Smoky Mountains Cost: $480 – 5 travel days Leaders: Mr. Jordan Samsonas, Mr. Adam Armstrong, Mrs. Amy Mucha Number of students: 35-42 Open to students in grades: 9-12

We will travel via charter bus to the Gatlinburg, Tennessee area where we will spend three days hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We will stay in a hotel each night (no overnight, outdoor camping) in downtown Gatlinburg. Each night, we will have an opportunity to eat at a restaurant of our choice and explore local sights/experiences. The average high in January in the Smoky Mountains is 48 degrees; the average low is 26. Gatlinburg averages 4 inches of snow in January. In other words, it should be great weather for hiking and exploring one of the most beautiful national parks in the United States. The total cost for the trip is $480. That includes transportation, accommodations and a $100 stipend for food. Proper hiking gear and equipment is required and may be an additional cost to consider (possibly about $300 - depending on what you already have). Students considering this course should be able to hike up to seven miles/day in varying terrain.

INTERNATIONAL TRIPS El Salvador - Love & Hope Children’s Home Cost: $1610 – approximately 10 travel days Leader: Mr. Dan Larlham, Miss Kate Flenniken Number of students: 8-16 Open to students in grades: 9-12 Passport required Love and Hope Children’s Home, an orphanage in El Salvador, is operated by two CVCA alums, Justin (1998) and Rachel (2001) Klubnik. This is a life-changing opportunity to see and serve on the mission field as well as experience a culture different than ours. The people, specifically the kids at the home, are the biggest draw. While there, our students will serve a local homeless population, minister to a local downtrodden community, and help Love and Hope with any jobs needed. This trip affords the students of CVCA a chance to truly follow the command of Jesus to love God and love others. Note: Suggested spending money $100-$200 for souvenirs, snacks.

South Africa – Serving Through Sports Cost: $3910 – approximately 10-12 travel days Leaders: Miss Courtney Wagner, Mrs. Michaela Toburen, Mr. Jon Young Number of students: 12-26 Open to students in grades: 9-12 Passport required January is the perfect time to travel to South Africa as temperatures range from 60-85 degrees. We will head to Cape Town where students will spend 10 days in sports ministry partnering with various organizations: Amandla Edufootball, CTC 10 Foundation, Ubuntu Football Academy, Sporting Chance, and Ambassadors Football. While most of our time will be spent working with these organizations, we will also have opportunity to see the amazing things Cape Town has to offer. These include hiking, seeing wildlife, taking surf lessons, and a bike tour. Our trip will end with an overnight safari. The evenings of our trip will be spent at the team house where we will dive into God's word and investigate different ministry styles. Ultimately, this trip provides an opportunity for students to learn how any common ground, such as sports, can be used as a tool for the spread of God's kingdom. As students serve people in a different country they will find themselves growing in a deeper understanding of God's world and develop a deeper compassion for His people everywhere. Students are responsible for souvenirs and snacks. Immunizations may be required. JOSHUA EXPEDITION TRIPS - Joshua Expeditions provides global opportunities for youth that serve

to encourage and highlight their gifts through hands-on experiences. Joshua Expeditions is a non-profit Christian organization founded for the purpose of assisting schools and churches in bringing the world to young people and bringing the Gospel to the world. Joshua Expeditions has been providing purpose-filled educational travel for over a decade to groups from all over the country. By design, every Joshua Expeditions tour includes ministry opportunities which add value and perspective to each experience.

Please note: After the initial deposit, all payments are made directly to Joshua Expeditions. Four equal payments are required between June 1-November 1, 2018.

CVCA Short Term Exchange Program Trips

STEP – Brazil: EIPG

Cost: $2410 – approximately 9-10 travel days (includes transportation, meals, and accommodations) Leaders: Mr. Dale Schilling, Mr. Steve Hyatt Number of students: 10-15 Open to students in grades: 9-12 Passport required Travel with us to Atibaia, Sao Paulo, Brazil as we serve with teachers and students from our sister school, Escola Internatcional Preparando Geracoes (EIPG). They will be our hosts as we travel with them to serve the community with a “Vacation Bible School” type of program. You will be immersed into the Brazilian culture where Portuguese is the native language. Schools are on “Summer Break” during January – haven’t you ever wanted to go to Brazil for summer break in January? This very special school collaboration is being planned in a local community that needs the Gospel. Our ministry will include music, sports, arts, English classes, and much more as we work together with EIPG students and parents. We believe these days will be a blessing to all involved and a powerful way of sharing the Gospel. While not a prerequisite, students participating in this trip are asked to consider hosting a student from EIPG during their two week visit to CVCA, in the fall (Homecoming week). Note: In addition to a passport, students are required to have a tourist visa to travel to Brazil (approx. $350, valid for multiple years), contact Mr. Schilling for details.

STEP Cambodia: BrightStart Learning Cost: $2410 – approximately 9-10 travel days Leaders: Mrs. Ellen Rasper, Mr. Emery Nickerson Number of students: 8-12 Open to students in grades: 9-12 Passport required Come experience the culture, history and beauty of Cambodia during this 10 day trip. Our team will be accompanied by BrightStart Learning founders, Gwen and Vernon Higaki and hosted by their staff (visit website here). While in Cambodia, students will have opportunity to lead VBS-style stories, music and English instruction at several of the BrightStart facilities. We will visit our partner school, Dewey International in Battambang to meet with students, administration and faculty. Additionally, we will also experience the history and culture of Cambodia through visits to museums, temples (including Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world which was built in the 12th century), and other attractions throughout the region. Students are responsible for souvenirs, food while traveling, pre-trip required shots, and need a passport (valid August 2019 or beyond).

STEP - Dominican Republic – Doulos Ministry & Cultural Exchange Cost: $1810 – approximately 10 travel days Leaders: Mrs. Gabby Hutt, Mrs. Marcie Lichi Number of students: 6-24 Open to students in grades: 9-12 Passport required

Doulos Discovery School (DDS) is a vibrant bilingual Christian school set in the verdant mountains of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic. Known by Dominicans as the outdoor adventure capitol of the DR, this area boasts the highest peak in the Caribbean, multiple waterfalls along two major rivers, mountain biking, hiking, rappelling, zip lines and rock climbing. Doulos Discovery School offers CVCA's only reciprocal exchange program. Preview Doulos’ study-abroad program for yourself, and visit with CVCA’s former exchange students now attending DDS. Students participate in hands-on service opportunities on campus and in the community. While there, students stay in villas within walking distance of the school (bring a swim suit for the pool!) and will spend time interacting with students, helping in classrooms, serving to improve campus facilities, trying tasty Dominican dinners hosted by Doulos families, visiting a fair-trade coffee farm, sampling the outdoor adventures at Pico Escondito, and worshiping in a local evangelical church. Help us build community within the Body of Christ across borders and cultures and see the Dominican Republic in a whole new way! Check out the Doulos Discovery School Video. Note: Trip cost includes transportation, meals in country, and accommodations. Students are responsible for own meals while in airports and for souvenirs.

STEP Norway: Danielsen School Cost: $2010 – approximately 9-10 travel days Leader: Mr. Steve Kasiguran Number of students: 6-11 Open to students in grades: 9-12 Passport required Norway is a beautiful country. Bergen, the second largest city, sits on the western coast and is considered the gateway to the fjords. A highlight of the trip is the “Norway in a Nutshell” tour by train, bus, and boat through the mountains and fjords. The Short Term Exchange Program (STEP) Norway provides the opportunity for home-to-home exchanges between students from Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and the Danielsen Videregaende School in Bergen, Norway. Students from both schools learn about the customs and culture of the exchange country. Our students experience first-hand the commonality of faith we enjoy in Christ, as we typically attend church and youth group services while we are in Bergen. They also develop a measure of independence as they learn how to deal with a different currency and with people whose native language is not English. Students interested in travel to Norway should also consider hosting a Norwegian student from Danielsen School in Bergen, Norway, for approximately two weeks in the fall (Homecoming week). Each CVCA student typically stays with the family of the Danielsen student they host in the fall.
