Dear 4-H Family, Beginning this enrollment season, all 4-H youth and volunteers will be enrolling via the 4Honline enrollment data management system. Open enrollment begins October 1, 2016 and will go thru January 15, 2017. 4-H families will create their own login and password that will be used multiple times throughout the year to communicate and transfer information to their local Purdue Extension Office, such as change of email or mailing address, registering for state and county events, and receiving newsletters and other pertinent information. Additionally, this system will allow approved 4-H adult volunteers to better communicate with youth members and their families. All youth and approved adult volunteers in the same household will create and submit individual member profiles from this family account. After your youth member information has been submitted, you will receive an email notifying you of the enrollment status. This process must be completed no later than January 15, 2017. Families that do not have internet access or would like assistance with the online enrollment process can stop by the Extension Office Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Opportunities to enroll with our assistance will also be available at your local 4-H club meetings, 4-H Kick-off on November 12th, and evening hours as requested. Please contact us before going online yourself to begin the enrollment process. We are always here to help in any way we can. Feel free to contact us at (812) 338-2352 if we can be of any assistance. Think about your recent trip to the grocery store. How did you make decisions on which products to purchase? Of course

there are those products you always purchase and there is little choice in mind…look at the price and load it in the cart.

If there is a choice to be made perhaps you flipped the product over and read the product label to learn ingredients,

nutritional content and even use instructions.

Product labels are a great tool but guess which products don’t carry a label of any kind? That’s right… all of the fresh

fruits and vegetables that are so healthful for our families.

I always ask the question …if you didn’t know how to select, prepare or serve fresh green beans…what is the chance

you would actually purchase them to serve to your family?

Everybody knows how to prepare fresh green beans right? Wrong!

And that is just one example. Do you know the nutritional content of turnip greens? How to make a meal using kohlrabi? How to

store raspberries? Surely everyone know how to cut up a melon?

As simple as each of these questions may seem, these and a thousand others are roadblocks to many shoppers making the choice to

buy and prepare fresh foods for their family.

Farmers’ market vendors routinely share this “common” knowledge with shoppers in the hope of making a customer happy and

increasing sales but in many other places where food is sold this is not a readily available service…until now… with the availability

of FoodLink!

FoodLink is a FREE tool developed by a team within Purdue Extension to help busy shoppers choose high quality fresh Indiana

products over lesser choices that may have less nutritional quality and may not taste as good as those fresh choices.

FoodLink provides vendors access to materials that include Quick Response (QR) codes that are unique to each of over 40

common Indiana fruits and vegetables from Asparagus to Zucchini and even Honey!

Grocery stores, farmers’ market vendors, farm markets and others simply make the appropriate QR code available to the shopper to

scan from their smart phone and allow them to use the clear concise information that immediately appears at their fingertips to make

the decision that is right for them and their families.

FoodLink allows them (you!) to use the power of the smartphone and the precision of a QR code to put information quite literally

in the palm of their hands as they are making food decisions at the point of purchase.

This code driven tool will provide immediate access to the user about proper food selection, use, preparation, pairings, storage and a

variety of other quickly accessed information including quick and easy recipes that will encourage the

incorporation of fresh fruits and vegetables into the diets of Hoosier families. The tool will address the

needs of not only home shoppers but also those of institutional buyers with recipes suitable for not only a

family of four but groups of 400.

Codes can be reproduced and placed on signage-large or small, physically on larger produce (melons and

pumpkins etc.), in print advertisements, on clothing (aprons, shirts, hats etc.), on boxes used for wholesale

shipments and many creative ways that we have yet to identify.

If you are a farmer or grocer, please take a few minutes to take a look at the FoodLink website at

www.purdue.edu/FoodLink to see if it might have benefit to you. We hope to

have our local JC store and food producers get involved in this project.

If you are a shopper please watch for FoodLink QR codes and marketing

materials wherever you shop. If you don’t see them there… ask the vendor to go

to the FoodLink website.

Due to a generous Specialty Crop Block Grant provided by the United States

Department of Agriculture and Indiana State Department of Agriculture there is

NO COST to use FoodLink!

For more information about how to access and use FoodLink resources in your

farm marketing or shopping activities, please contact Gail Peitzmeier, Purdue

Crawford County Extension director and educator, by calling 812-338-2352or

We are very excited to introduce the newest member of our Purdue Extension family and your new Crawford County Ag & Natural Resources/Youth Development Educator, Molley Scott.

My name is Molley Scott and I’m proudly joining Crawford County’s Extension team as the

new 4-H/ANR Extension Educator. I’m twenty- two years old and a Kentucky native from

the small town of Munfordville, Kentucky. I’m the eldest of three children. I’ve grown up

on my fourth generation family farm located in Hart County. I recently graduated from

Western Kentucky University where I received my B.S. degree in Agriculture with a

concentration in animal science. Over my college career I had the opportunity to study

agriculture abroad in Ecuador. I was a member of the WKU Livestock Judging Team,

Meats Judging Team, Block & Bridle Club, Agriculture Ambassador, a sister of Sigma

Alpha Sorority, and an employee at the WKU Floral Design and Training Center. I enjoy

being outdoors and anything adventurous! My hobbies include showing livestock,

canoeing, riding four-wheelers, photography, sports, and traveling.

County Extension has always been a big part of my life through 4-H activities and my

family farm. I have been heavily involved in the 4-H youth program since the age of four

when my parents introduced me to my very first market lamb project. To this day my

brother, sister and I still competitively show livestock together as a family hobby. My

family farming operation consists of beef cattle,

tobacco, hay production, and showing

livestock. Being involved in 4-H at such a young

age has shown me the importance and value

that extension holds on a community, its youth,

and the future of agriculture. I have grown up

with a respect for agriculture, while 4-H has

helped me instill excellent leadership skills, and

it has shaped me into the person I am today.

Head, Heart, Hands, and Health have taught

me determination, passion, hard work, and re-

spect for my club, my community, my country,

and my world. As an Extension Educator I

have the opportunity to teach others the skills

and knowledge I’ve learned through my 4-H

career and agricultural roots. I look forward to

meeting the people of Crawford County and

enhancing the community by being a resource

of knowledge and a helping hand.
