You read that correctly – ministers of Christ.Because that is what you all are. You are ministers of Christ each and every day in everything you do. Each of us is called in our Baptism to bear the good news of Jesus Christ even when we may not feel qualified to do so or like Jonah or resist that calling to do Gods work out of fear. The Womens Circle, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month (September – May) at 9:00 a.m. recently went through a Bible study on the above passage as found in Gather magazine. (Women of the ELCA, 2016, pp. 28-32) The study is primarily centered on forgiveness and how challenging it is to wrap our heads around the notion of Gods mercy. In this case, Jonah cant fathom why God would forgive the Ninevites for their detestable behavior. Yet, what really struck me was the verses above. The word of the Lord came to Jonah and it directed him to go to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was in Assyria, which was Israels enemy. And our text tells us instead of going to Nineveh Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish.Tarshish is in modern day Spain and was approximately 2,500 miles the opposite direction of Nineveh. Not only does Jonah flee, but he gets as far away as possible. The task he has been called to is too frightening. Too daunting. As ministers of Christ we too often retreat for the safe confines of our own Tarshish.Perhaps, thats back into the comforts of our homes. Perhaps, thats back to the way its always been done. Perhaps, thats just to sit back and tell ourselves someone else will do it. Gods work is frightening at times because it does lead us places we dont want to go; however, once we do go God is able to do some pretty amazing things through us and we often encounter the grace and mercy of God we simply cant imagine. Where is God calling you? Where is God calling our congregation? Wherever it is may we have the eyes to see it, the ears to hear it, the minds to comprehend it, and the courage and strength to go. Blessings on the journey! Dear Faithful Ministers of Christ, Yes, that’s right. You read that correctly – “ministers of Christ.” Because that is what you all are. You are ministers of Christ each and every day in everything you do. Each of us is called in our Baptism to bear the good news of Jesus

Christ even when we may not feel qualified to do so or like Jonah or resist that calling to do God’s work out of fear. The Women’s Circle, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month (September – May) at 9:00 a.m. recently went through a Bible study on the above passage as found in Gather magazine. (Women of the ELCA, 2016, pp. 28-32) The study is primarily centered on forgiveness and how challenging it is to wrap our heads around the notion of God’s mercy. In this case, Jonah can’t fathom why God would forgive the Ninevites for their detestable behavior. Yet, what really struck me was the verses above. The word of the Lord came to Jonah and it directed him to go to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was in Assyria, which was Israel’s enemy. And our text tells us instead of going to Nineveh Jonah “set out to flee to Tarshish.” Tarshish is in modern day Spain and was approximately 2,500 miles the opposite direction of Nineveh. Not only does Jonah flee, but he gets as far away as possible. The task he has been called to is too frightening. Too daunting. As ministers of Christ we too often retreat for the safe confines of our own “Tarshish.” Perhaps, that’s back into the comforts of our homes. Perhaps, that’s back to the way it’s always been done. Perhaps, that’s just to sit back and tell ourselves someone else will do it. God’s work is frightening at times because it does lead us places we don’t want to go; however, once we do go God is able to do some pretty amazing things through us and we often encounter the grace and mercy of God we simply can’t imagine. Books For Adults This month’s theme is Luther and the reformation. Next year, we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the issuing of the 95 Theses. The first book Luther’s Fortress: Martin Lu-ther And His Reformation Under Siege by James Reston, Jr. was recommended by a member. It details the crucial time after the Diet of Worms in 1521 when Luther was in the Wartburg Castle and translated the New Testament into German.

Augsburg Press has made available to us a number of books concerning Martin Luther. We will have a display of them and will have a copy of each for our library. Members will also have the opportunity to buy their own copy of these books at up to 50% off the retail price. I will need to keep the descriptions of each book short since there are quite a few of them.

When Lightning Struck: the Story Of Martin Luther by Danika Cooley is written specifically with teen readers and adults new to Luther in mind in the style of a fast-paced novel.

Luther The Reformer: The Story Of The Man And His Career by James Kittelson is a best selling biography of Luther.

Resilient Reformer: The Life And Thought Of Martin Luther by Timothy F. Lull and Derek R. Nelson is a biography of Luther in which he “is portrayed more as a loud tenor in the Reformation chorale than as a solo voice of dissent.”

Atlas Of the European Reformations by Tim Dowley is a new atlas that gives a clear view of the broader reformation scene.

Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses: With Introduction, Commentary, And Study Guide by Timothy J. Wengert is a great resource.

The Annotated Luther, Volume I: The Roots Of Reform by Timothy J. Wengert contains writings “that defined the roots of reform set in mo-tion by Martin Luther.”

The Freedom Of A Christian, 1520: The Annotated Luther Study Edition by Martin Luther with introduction and annotations by Timothy J. Wengert. “Perhaps the most widely read of Luther’s writings and a great introduction to his theology.”

Treatise On Good Works, 1520: The Annotated Luther Study Edition by Martin Luther with introduction and annotations by Timothy J. Wengert. “Luther’s transformational idea of justification by faith alone was mis-represented in the early years of the reformation. In this treatise, Luther sets out to clarify the biblical foundation of good works.”

Warming Hearts with God’s Love and a Good Pair of Mittens

Far too often, there are children who arrive at LSI’s Beloit and Bremwood Residential Treatment Centers with almost nothing in their possession. And for children or youth who have been in the foster care system, it’s not uncommon for them to arrive with everything they own in a single garbage bag.

We give thanks for Iowa congregations because you faithfully respond to these needs, year after year! As winter approaches, LSI relies on your loving support to meet the demand for hats, gloves and mittens for children and youth at Beloit and Bremwood. With your generous dona-tion, each child can have the chance to shop for their own winter cloth-ing.

Your church has likely received or will soon be receiving a letter inviting you to participate in LSI’s hats and mittens appeal. If you would like more information, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philan-thropy and church relations, at [email protected] or 563-676-2065.

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in Ameri-ca). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gen-der identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orienta-tions. Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

Seeds of Hope The kids at the Beloit Residential Treatment Center in Ames have been hard at work this year in the Beloit Learning Garden.

The space gives kids the chance to learn new skills each week, like gar-dening and growing healthy foods.

“I love seeing how excited the kids get about the vegetables and picking them. Any time the kids are around healthy food, it’s really great,” says garden volunteer Rachel.

Kyanni has learned plenty of new lessons about farming. When she’s in the garden, she’s hard at work finding her favorite vegetable—broccoli—or helping the younger kids find good foods to pick and send back to Beloit’s dining room.

Kids like Paul have found a passion for farming and a love of vegeta-bles thanks to the garden and its volunteers.

Paul has been working in the garden throughout the year, and he loves learning about nature and making new food every week. His favorite vegetable is zucchini, which he now gets to grow in the garden.

When he grows up, Paul wants to be a farmer and plant “a whole bunch of stuff” for his family.

Thanks to the generous gifts of our donors, kids like Paul are growing up with access to healthy foods and a love of the outdoors.

Once again Bethany joined with thousands of ELCA congregations around America in a dedicated day of service which has come to be known as “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. This was an awesome day and we had several projects as outlined in the photos below. Keep up the good work faithful people of God and know that each and every day we respond to God’s grace through love and service of our neighbor.

God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday

Approximately 40 cars were washed and donations of nearly $500 received to go to the Operation Backpack Program at Hoover Elementary, which sends food home with approximately 20 students over the weekend.

The quilters continued to use their hands to create beautiful quilts of compassion.

This group gathered with the residents of Crestview Nursing and Rehabilita-tion Center to sing joyous hymns of praise to God.

President Black then spoke to the group and asked that as we go forward this evening and for all future meet-ings, all committee members should limit their reports to only those issues which are of particular interest to the Council as it relates to Church business and should not conduct pseudo-committee meetings at Council. Each committee chair should have a fully functioning com-mittee and be meeting with them on a semi-regular basis to conduct relevant committee discussions. Committee Reports: Building and Grounds: (Jamie Zimmerman) It appears our bat problem in the parsonage attic has been resolved but we will continue to monitor it for this next month before we close the attic completely up again. Education: (Tonya Samuelson) An email has been sent out to all parents who have children of Sunday School age regarding a planning meeting for tomorrow night. There has been some response though not as strong as the Education committee was hoping for.

Evangelism: (Greg Lipes) Paula picked up the sup-plies for the School Back Pack Program and 26 lunches were prepared for distribution. Unfortunately only 4 kids showed up at the school for the distribution which was disappointing. Old Business: Discussion took place regarding a number of creative ideas as well as different areas of emphasis we as a Church could or should be taking as it relates to “God’s Work, Our Hands”. It was decided to hold a free car wash at the church where we would accept donations from anyone who wished to make them and that all do-nations would be given to the School Backpack Pro-gram. The car wash will be on Sunday, Sept 11 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the church. In addition, it was also decided that any members who wanted to would go to the Nursing Home during this time to interact with the residents and sing some hymns. Also, the Lady Quilters will meet during this time and work on quilts for dona-tion.

New Business: There was no new business to be discussed. Meeting adjourned at 7:40 pm with the Lord’s Prayer. Next Council Meeting is Monday, September 12 at 6:30 PM

Faith at Home For some time now we have had short Bible passages and reflections pertaining to that text on the tables in the Great Hall. We have decided to also place those in the Newsletter. The passages and questions will match up with those found on the tables. Therefore if you want to continue the discussion at home you can. This is one more way we are trying to spur conversation about faith and also absorb ourselves in the word of God.

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

•I feel like I am carrying heavy burdens… •In finding rest for my soul, I… •Learning to walk and work with Jesus…

Isaiah 40:1-2

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served

her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

Matthew 19:4-6

He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

•For a marriage relationship to work… •Divorce… •When God is part of a relationship…

Isaiah 11:1-3

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear.

Dear Friends, We are nearing the start of the holiday season! Bethany will be hosting Angel Tree families again this year. I have coordi-nated this mission for a num-ber of years. I ask that you consider working with me this year to learn the process of this important event. Remem-ber these are all local families that support. We should get our families mid November. If you are interested in working on this mission, please contact me at [email protected] or 319-631-2661. Blessings, Jeni Schiele

First Communion Education

Is your child ready to start receiving the sacra-ment of Holy Communion? A tentative date for first communion instruction has been set for Monday, October 17 at 5:30 pm. All children going through the instruction will then receive their first communion during worship on Refor-mation Sunday, October 30. It is our belief a child does not need to be a certain age to take communion; however, some education is re-quired so the child will have a basic understand-ing of this sacrament. The decision of whether or not a child is ready is made between the par-ents/guardians and pastor. If your child plans to attend please let Pastor Chad know as soon as possible so supplies can be ordered.

Small Group Opportunity Have you ever desired a richer understanding of the foundations and practices of

Lutheran worship? Have you ever wondered why we gather? Or, how we encounter God in worship

and how that encounter shapes our response in both our communities and our world?

If you have, then join us for a study on all those questions and more as we read the short guide produced by Augsburg Fortress called: Worship Matters An Introduction to Worship. (Augsburg Fortress, 2012) This study is for any and all whether you are a newcomer to the Christian faith or to a Lutheran church or have worshipped regularly in a Lutheran congregation for years but simply want to know more about why we do what we do in worship. This course will meet 5 weeks. The Thursday’s we will meet are as follows: October 20 and 27, November 10 and 17, and December 8. We will gather at 7:00 p.m. in the Small Fellowship Hall. If interested please contact Pastor Chad or Paula as soon as possible so a participant guide can be ordered. They cost $6.99. Thank you!

For the past several weeks a small group has gathered to read a book about prayer, engage in lively conver-sation, and enter into prayer through a variety of different ways. It has been a wonderful experience and we are going to continue to meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Small Hall. We may discuss our prayer lives, watch short videos, read articles on prayer, or simply gather to pray. We welcome all to attend even if you simply want to sit and join in prayer. Our first session will be Thursday, November 3rd.

This is a follow-up article from the August Newsletter. We have been communicating where our benevolence gifts go once they are directed to the Southeastern Iowa Synod whom we are in partnership with as a church. In that article we explained that in 2016 Bethany Lutheran has committed 10% of our financial giving to go to the Synod to support that partnership and further shared ministries within the ELCA. We also communicated that 53.5% of that 10% goes directly to the ELCA headquarters in Chicago. So the question is, what kingdom work is done with those dollars? Well, that’s not an easy question to answer in a short space and for more information look at the poster on Pastor Chad’s door or on the bulletin board near the kitchen. However, here is just a few ways of how those gifts are stewarded by the church: plant and support 340 new congregations, develop and share resources for congregational use, send 220 missionaries to more than 40 countries (including more than 70 Young Adults in Global Mission), support the work of the eight ELCA seminaries and 26 colleges and universities, offer events and leadership opportunities, provide office space, equipment and human resources for ELCA Churchwide staff and operations, design and maintain communication tools, coordinate meetings and support for 65 synodical bishops, support social ministry organizations, such as Lutheran Services in America, to impact the lives of 1 in 50 Americans, and a host of others things.

Daily Bible Readings The foundational premise of this set of daily readings is their relationship to the Sunday lectionary. The readings are chosen so that the days

leading up to Sunday (Thursday through Saturday) prepare for the Sunday readings. The days flowing out from Sunday (Monday through

Wednesday) reflect upon the Sunday readings. The complete Daily Lectionary is also found on pages 1121-1153 of our hymnal, Evangelical

Lutheran Worship.
