Dr. Robert Marzano

Addresses Salem Academy / Salem Public Schools

Joint Conference

Salem Academy Charter School brought Dr. Robert Marzano to Salem for a full day workshop with the Salem Academy Charter School faculty and with the leadership teams from the nine schools in the Salem Public Schools district on Friday, January 23. The event was a key element in the Project on Standards Based Instruction begun in September as a result of a $364,400 Federal grant awarded to Salem Academy for the purpose of disseminating our best practices in this field for the benefit of the district schools.

Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research in Colorado. A leading researcher in education, he is a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include The Art and Science of Teaching and Effective Supervision. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators.

Will Emerling, Grade 9, won Third Place in the Youth Group for the Essex National Heritage Photos contest.

After a reception on January 28, the winning images will be dis-played at the National Park Ser-vice Regional Visitor Center in Salem, (2 New Liberty Street, Salem MA) and at the Office of the Merrimack Valley Planning Commision in Haverhill (160 Main Street, Haverill, MA) for about a year.

The winning images were select-ed by a panel of judges that in-cluded guest judges Joshua Bas-seches, Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Peabody Essex Museum and three-time Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Stanley Forman.

Winter Weather Alert Since our students use the Salem Public School buses, Salem Academy Charter School will follow the Salem

Public Schools regarding delayed openings or school closings due to bad weather.

We do not call the radio and TV stations. We do, however, place a “one-call” telephone call to all families confirming the information. Please be sure that we have the proper telephone number so that we can

reach you with a “one-call”. In addition, delays and closing are announced on our website and facebook page.

Calendar Raffle is the Best Fund Raising Deal of the Year! For the month of January, Salem Academy students have an opportunity to sell February Calendar Raffle tickets at $10 each offering buyers 28 chances to win with every ticket.. Each day in February, a ticket is drawn from the drum. The winner gets the prize indicated for that day. All prizes are valued at $25 or more. The grand prize is an ipad mini. Wining tickets go back in the drum, so even one ticket can win multiple prizes. 100% of funds from tick-et sales go directly in the students’ personal school accounts and are available to pay for field trips, school clothing, social events, or fees for any other school sponsored programs.
