Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,
We have had a wonderful last week of term with a series of excellent
community events happening. At the assembly last week, PPL
presented a really informative assembly item on the Kimochi Dolls
emotional literacy program now operating so successfully in our junior
primary classes.
On Tuesday there was a huge attendance at our Grandparents Day.
We are hoping to have a report and some quality photographs in the
newspaper next week. My thanks to Mrs Meyer for organising and
coordinating this wonderful day of community and engagement.
Thanks also to the teachers and EAs for organising such a fun time in
the classrooms for all our visitors and their grandchildren.

On Wednesday, both year two classes had a most enjoyable Dinosaur Day, with plenty of parent
volunteers looking after the group rotation of activities.
Yesterday our pre-primary classes combined for a Fairy Tale Day, again with significant help and
involvement of many parent volunteers. The children had a wonderful day of guided construction
and artistic work with some exceptional results.
We are all so fortunate to work
and learn in such a happy and
positive environment, where
everyone is appreciated and
supported in all aspects of school
life.
Year Five School Camp
Our year five students have spent the last three days at Bridgetown Camp School. We have had
reports about how good the camp has been, particularly the gourmet meals with photos texted
to make us all hungry.
The students enjoyed a range of activities, including photo orienteering, canoeing and bush track
cycling. In the evening, the students participated in a mini-olympics and a quiz night. They also
visited Big Brook Dam, the Manjimup Timber Park and Donnybrook Apple Park in a busy few days.
My thanks to Mr Danaher and Mrs Kartana who attended as teachers, and to Bruce Currie and
Nicole Jasper who attended as parent helpers.
Classroom Blogs
A good way for parents to keep abreast of all the learning happening in the school is to access
the classroom blogs on our website. Please go to http://www.ladyofcape.wa.edu.au, click on
“Our Learning” and Class Blogs is the first item on the drop down menu. Alternatively you can click
on the icon on the left hand side of the home page. My thanks to all our teachers for presenting
the blogs with so much information and presented so attractively.
Upgrade to Images on the Website
Whilst on the website you will notice that the images have been updated with the photographs
taken by Carolyn Moylan recently. My thanks to Mr Torrese and Carolyn for their respective roles
in the update.
Much Appreciated Service to the School
Today marks ten years of service to our school by Mr Hogan. It is a real bonus to have John on
staff as our cleaner, gardener and resident handyman who is our “go-to person” whenever we
have a problem. My thanks to Mr Hogan on behalf of all in our community. His expertise and
ingenuity saves the school a considerable amount of money.
First Semester Reports
Mid year reports are being sent home today in sealed envelopes. I spent yesterday reading and
signing all reports and, as mentioned last week. I am very happy with the rate of improvement
being shown by all students. We will post the reports to families not at school today.
Stage 5 Build
You will notice that our building plan is underway with excavations happening ready for the Sloan
Drive access road and for the foundations of the buildings. Please refer to the newsletter of last
week for more details.
The car park above the main car park will be completed by week 2 of term 3. Mr Torrese will send
an email towards the end of the holidays outlining the operation of the “Kiss and Drop” that will
commence at drop off time to overcome parking difficulties whilst the staff are unable to use the
upper car park.
On-line School Calendar - Website
As the calendar is continually updated, it is suggested that parents don’t print out a copy for
reference, but refer the website regularly to keep up to date with events planned.
School Disco – Friday 23rd June
Thanks again to the efforts of our very able parent volunteers; Leanne Verhoeff, Lauren Bidesi and
Nicole Vernon, for arranging a great night for our children last Friday. A good time was had by all!
Commencement of Term 3
Term three commences for the staff and students on Monday 17th July. Parents please note that
there is no PD Day for staff on the Monday.
Best Wishes for Holidays
I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe family holiday. As outlined last week, I will be
taking five weeks long service leave at the start of next term and will return to school on Monday
21st August.
As outlined last week, Mr Torrese will be Acting Principal in my absence, with Mrs Meyer and Mrs
Birch sharing the Assistant Principal role. It is great to be able to go on leave knowing that the
administration of the school will continue seamlessly with such experienced professional and
committed staff available to replace me. My first two years at OLC have been a wonderful
experience, but very busy with so much happening. I am looking forward to a much needed
break.
Kind Regards and God Bless,
Des Wilkie
Principal
Holiday Reading.
Attached to this newsletter is a list of books suggested to “HOOK” reluctant
readers. It has been compiled by Maggie Dent and her colleagues. The list
has been created with boys in mind but would be quite suitable for girls too.
As a mother of four boys herself, Maggie Dent has some very sensible insights
into coping with the needs of boys.

GRANDPARENTS DAY
What a joy it was to see a record number of Grandparents attend the 2017 Grandparents Day!
The morning began with a a prayer service beautifully led by the children in Kindy to Year 3. During
the service we asked God to bless and protect our Grandparents and we showed appreciation
for the special role that they play in our lives. Following the prayer service we had a surprise video
of a number of children with their Grandparents underaking a some amazing activities.
Grandparents were then treated to morning tea and a video performance of this year’s winning
OLC Eisteddfod Choir, led by Mrs Horrocks.
Following morning tea, the Grandparents were invited to visit classrooms and engage in numerous
activities with their Grandchildren. The smile on the faces of both the children and the
Grandparents was testament to how much each values the other.
Many thanks to all of the Grandparents who attended and to the P&F reps from each classroom
who organised and provided plates for the morning tea. Thank you also to the classroom teachers
who organised the fantastic activities in each classroom and the beautiful artwork that was on
display in the hall. We are blessed, and look forward to another successful event next year.
YEAR 6 CONFIRMATION
Our Sacramental program resumes in Week One of next term with our Year 6
students and their families required to attend a preparatory workshop for the
Sacrament of Confirmation. The workshop will take place from 5.30pm on
Thursday the 20th of July in the school hall. The sacrament of Confirmation
completes the sacrament of Baptism. During the Sacrament, the candidates
receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit to strengthen their faith. The workshop
is a wonderful opportunity for the candidates and their parents to develop a
shared understanding of the sacrament. Students will be confirmed on
Saturday the 5th August at 6.00pm at Our Lady of the Southern Cross. All OLC
families are invited to come along and support the students on the continuation of their faith
journey.
ST VINNIES DRIVE – “GIVE A CAN IF YOU CAN”
Our local St Vincent De Paul Society regularly puts together food hampers for those people of
Dunsborough who may be struggling to make ends meet. Many of us are fortunate to be blessed
in our daily lives and it is important that we consider those less fortunate, and take action to show
compassion. To this end, next term I will be placing a box in the undercover area and will be asking
for donations of non-perishable food items that we can donate to the Vinnies. So next time you
are at the shop, maybe grab an extra can or packet of something and drop it off to the box. All
donations will be most gratefully received. Thank you!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Wishing you a safe and relaxing holiday. I hope you all stay dry and warm! God Bless.
Mrs Amie Meyer, OLC Religious Education Coordinator.

OLC Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update
Well we've been busy in the garden and it's
looking terrific! MANY thanks to our fabulous team: Amanda, Robyn,
Sherylee, Lisa, the Mike's, James, Dave, we simply couldn't do it
without you! AND a huge thanks to our "little" gardeners who did some
seedling planting with their grandparents this week, can't wait to
harvest those little babies next term for some more "fun" activities.
Today we held our second market and despite the weather and diminished school numbers we
had a fabulous time and raised some funds to keep growing this invaluable program to support
FUN FOOD EDUCATION for the kids and entire school community.
A HUGE thanks to the effort and time contributions made by Robyn (lemon butter queen),
Amanda (adding the "thyme" to the team), Vanessa (sign writer extraordinaire), these sorts of
value added events are impossible without a dedicated and passionate team!!!
In the spirit of sharing, below are the recipes from today's "market" offerings that are immune
boosting and timely in this weather...
Organic Fermented Probiotic Lemonade:
3 lemons juiced
4 strips of peel
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 litre of water
1 tbsp - 1/4 cup raw honey to taste
2 capsules of "quality" probiotic or fermenting culture
sealable or fermenting vessel
Combine all ingredients, tightly seal in the jar and leave to ferment for 5 days (in winter and less
in summer) then pop it in the fridge to cool and enjoy!
Organic HOT Buttered Turmeric Lemon Latte
3 cups of water
2 large lemons juiced
3 thick strips of lemon peel
4 cinnamon sticks
1 heaped tsp turmeric latte spice blend (realhealthykids.com)
1 heaped tbsp butter or coconut oil
honey to taste (less sugar is ALWAYS best and add it when ready to drink)
Simmer ingredients for 5-10 minutes then strain and add honey to taste. I like to heat it in the
thermomix so I can then give it a wizz and make it creamier.
See you next term with MORE fabulous market themes!
