Look kindly on all candidates for Confirmation as they listen to Your voice. Open their hearts to Your Spirit and bring to fulfilment the good work that You have begun in them. As we prepare these children for Confirmation, make each of us an instrument of Your love. Teach us to appreciate what is holy in others, and to be patient with what we do not understand. Deepen our faith in the Gospel and help us to pass it on by our example. We pray that You will continue to guide us and sustain us. Through Christ our Lord, Amen. Dear Parents/Care givers Eucharist Sacrament Congratulations to the Year Four students who received the sacrament of First Eucharist last week. It was lovely to be present to support these students with this important part of their lives. Thank you to Father Noe, Mrs, McAuley , Mrs Strydom and staff for their support of these students. Father Noe in his homily discussed the importance of the Eucharist in nourishing our relationship with God, he also talked about how as a parish and school community our support nourishes each one of us. We continue to keep all the students in our prayers as they are nourished by the Eucharist and reaffirm their relationship with God. A special mention to the school choir who made the sacrament so special with their amazing singing. Confirmation Sacrament We keep the Year Six students in our prayers this week as they prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday. Through the support of parents, staff and parish we hope that these students continue to nourish their gifts from God and through the Holy Spirit strengthen their relationship with God and others. Interschool Cross Country Well done to our students who participated in the cross country last week. The students displayed a high standard of sportsmanship and it was great to see the encouragement they gave their fellow runners as they crossed the finish line. It was a delight to be able to watch some of the children for this event. Their hard work and practice has obviously paid off and they should be very proud of their efforts. A special mention to Lexi Reid 9th (Year Four girls), Brook Strachan 10th (Year Four girls), Noah Charles 10th (Year Four boys), Olivia Pursell 5th (Year Five girls), Noah Jones 3rd (Year Six boys) and Corbyn Knox 5th (Year Six boys). Thank you to all the staff and parents who organised the practices, supported the students and encouraged their efforts. A special mention to those children who were reserves for the event, your dedication to the cross country group makes the school success possible. Further information regarding this event is on page four.

New Community Members We welcome Aarush Cheppalli (3H) and Suniesha Couzens (2D) and their families to St Joseph’s. We trust you all will soon feel a part of the school community.

Kindergarten 2021 Last week I started the interviews for our new Kindy 2021 cohort – it is such an honour to showcase the school to new families and to welcome families to St Joseph’s as they start their Catholic education journey. A highlight for me was when the current Kindy students started engaging with new parents and showing off their classrooms and telling parents about all the great things they do in Kindy. It is lovely to see such pride in our school especially so confidently from some of our youngest students.

Skills for Life - Year Six Our Year Six students were able to hone their lifesaving skills last week by attending a course run by the Lifesaving Association. It is such an invaluable skill to be able to identify the needs of others and offer life saving techniques to help them. Well done to everyone involved.

Class Visits & Communication It has been a highlight of my week to not only visit the classrooms but also to have some students visit me in my office to showcase their fantastic work. I have been delighted to see some amazing factual information about frogs as well as some great creative artwork. I love hearing the children describing the learning processes they used to create their pieces of work. I look forward to putting some of this creative work on display in my office.

Communication is a strong tool for creating and maintaining a positive school culture. I am really impressed by the manner in which students at school are taking the opportunity to introduce themselves to me and tell me a little about themselves and discuss the things they love about St Joseph’s. It has also been lovely that a number of parents have introduced themselves to me and told me all the things they love about the school. We encourage parents to keep the avenues of communication open between staff and parents so that we can work closely in partnership to support the learning and development at St Joseph’s and celebrate all the great achievements.

Congratulations Congratulations to the following students on their fantastic achievement in being awarded Academic Scholarships, P&F & Indigenous Bursaries from Bunbury Catholic Colleges for 2021.

School Fees A system generated fee statement was emailed to every family yesterday. A reminder that the term three instalment is required to be settled by Thursday, 20 August (week 5) unless you have either a Direct Debit or Bpay set up. Parents who have a concern with the payment of fees are invited to make an appointment with Ms Quirk for a confidential discussion. Annette Quirk Principal St John of God Hospital Volunteers “Collectively we do what no person can do singly.” Do you have time to volunteer? We have many varied roles at the hospital as well as opportunities to form a valued relationship with a resident in an Aged Care facility in Bunbury, who is socially isolated. These roles are rewarding and make a positive difference to the lives of people. If you are interested, you can visit our Website www.sjog.org.au/bunbury and choose Working With Us, then Volunteers, where you can read about the different roles and compete an application form. Alternatively, you could ring Sue Demarte, Coordinator of Volunteer Services on 97221694, or email Sue on [email protected]

Mary was born in Victoria to Scottish immigrants. She was the eldest of eight children and spent her early years working to support her family. At the age of 24 she dedicated her life to God and took on the name “Mary of the Cross”. Helped and encouraged by Fr Julian Tenison Woods, Mary opened a school in a disused stable in Penola, South Australia. Her vision was to provide education for underprivileged children. Many women came to join her there, and Australia’s first religious order, the Sisters of St Joseph, was founded. Mary and the Sisters were committed to serving the poor – to going to where the need was and living amongst those in need. This took Mary all over Australia to many rural areas. For various reasons, Mary faced opposition throughout her life, which at one point culminated in her being excommunicated. In the face of trial, Mary was a model of forgiveness, insisting no ill be spoken of those who wronged her, while also remaining resolute in her convictions. In her early years, Mary developed a devotional life that involved St Joseph who attracted her because of his humility and obedience; the Sacred Heart to whom she turned when in need of care and shelter and the inspiration and witness of St John the Baptist. Her spirituality showed in her trust in the will of God, and she was further influenced by the Jesuits who promoted the art of living constantly with a listening, discerning heart so as to find God in all things. As her awareness of God’s unconditional love grew, Mary’s loving heart became enriched and freed and began to over-flow into genuine concern for others. For her, God was caring and forgiving of all people without exception. In leading the Sisters, Mary was very conscious of the need for them to be aware of God’s presence and power working within them, by taking time to nurture this love and enable it to overflow into their compassion, for-giveness, courage and resilience. She often reminded her Sisters about being united with their God so closely that they could become their best selves. Taken from https://www.sosj.org.au/resources/marys-spirituality/ Melanie Stapleton Assistant Principal Anaphylaxis At St Joseph’s we have some students who are allergic to nuts, dairy products, raw eggs and shellfish, to name a few. Anaphylaxis is the most severe allergic reaction and due to the life-threatening nature of these allergies our school community seeks to minimise risk by keeping our school as allergen free as possible. To assist us we ask that you not send to school food that contains nuts (this includes peanut butter, Nutella, all nuts and cooking oil containing peanut oil, as well as food containing nuts), raw eggs and shellfish. This is especially important in the Junior Primary and ECE where young children are less able to manage their allergy. Helping your child to write: creating a “literacy rich” home When our families enjoy opportunities to read, write, speak and listen, our children learn that these are important skills for everyday life. Some ways to create a literacy rich home:

Books, books, books … you can never have or read too many books. Set aside a special family reading time.

Discuss what your child is reading or writing. Display labels and alphabet and word posters in your child’s bedroom and around the home. Organise a bookshelf to display your child’s books. Create a comfortable nook that “invites” family members to curl up with a good book. Provide various writing materials or create a special “writing box” that will help your child see writing as a special activity. Collect props for imaginative play that forms the basis for practising speaking and writing. Most importantly, read yourself … this is the best modelling and encouragement.

MJR: Reflecting on what Jesus said and did Jesus said, “Be humble, be comforted, be meek, be just, be merciful, be pure-hearted, be peacemakers, be courageous.” (Matthew 5:12). Not only did Jesus remind us what loving God and each other looks like, he showed us. Jesus healed many people others rejected (think of the lepers, the blind and the paralysed). He talked to those that everyone hated (the Roman centurion, tax collectors). And he forgave those who crucified him. When we think living like Jesus is too hard, we can remember he gave us his Holy Spirit to empower, encourage and help us. He also said the things that are impossible for us are possible with God – a reminder we need every day! Jane Olsen Assistant Principal School Board Summary - July 2020 Welcome Back to Term Three and a special warm welcome to our new Principal Ms. Annette Quirk. We are sure you will enjoy being a part of our wonderful school community. We would also like to welcome Mrs. Josette Knox, who has joined our staff in the Kindy learning area. Interviews for Kindy 2021 are underway and we look forward to welcoming new families into our school. The mid-year school budget was reviewed and approved by the board. The Family Business Directory is now up and running. A link for you to view is included in the newsletter. In the current economic climate, supporting local business and at the same time supporting our wonderful families, is a great way to support your community. There is still ample opportunity to get involved if you have a business to promote and it is free! A friendly reminder to be vigilant of the car park rules which are in place for the safety of all. It is important that vehicles keep moving in the drop off/pickup lanes to avoid stationary traffic on Parade Road and Washington Avenue. Mrs Blee Board Chairperson Interschool Cross Country - Message from Mrs Jones Congratulations to the St Joseph’s Interschool Cross Country team who represented us at last Thursday’s event. Many teams members performed very well due to hard work and preparation through the running club and extra training at home. They should feel very proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mrs Charles for her ongoing support with our students. Not only did Mrs Charles bring some Manea students to assist in the warmups on the day, but she also took home the school running shirts and washed them for us. Also thank you to Mrs Reibel who accompanied me to support the running of the carnival as a course official. Mrs Jones Sport Specialist
