In Memoriam
FRANCIS TAKUMI KAMIKAWA of Headquarters Company
passed away on June 13, 2016 at the age of 97
Our deepest sympathy to his family
THANK YOU TO ALL THE GRAVE
DECORATING VOLUNTEERS
Every year, as the list of 100th veterans who have
passed away grows, so does our need for more
volunteers to help honor these men by placing floral
tributes at their final resting places across Oahu (this
year, we had over 1,000 graves at Punchbowl alone).
We would like to thank all of these following devoted
volunteers without whom the 2016 100th Grave
Decorating would not have been possible.
Diamond Head Memorial Park: Glenn and Jean
Imada, and Earl Kawaguchi.
Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe:
Mary Aoki, Harry Nakayama, Skip Tomiyama
and her four senior friends, and Jan Yuasa.
Mililani Memorial Park: Rural Chapter members
Honolulu Memorial Park, Nuuanu Memorial Park
and Oahu Cemetery in Nuuanu: Karen Yamasaki and
family.
There were so many volunteers who helped at
Punchbowl that the list is still being compiled now
and will be published in the November PPP.
Thank you also to these volunteers for coming to
the Clubhouse on Friday, September 23 to unpack all
of the bouquets from their shipping boxes and sorting
them into buckets: Sophie Hatakenaka, Gary
Hayakawa, Harry Nakayama, James and Janine
Nogawa, Jan Sakoda, Arlene Sato, Dot Tamashiro,
MaryAnn Tanabe and Charlotte Unni.
You may not realize it but preparations for the
2017 Grave Decorating began on Saturday,
September 24 when the 2016 event was over. It is a
year long project with lots of behind the scenes work
being done by a handful of people.
Much mahalo to Arlene Sato who has coordinated
the Grave Decorating for many years. She has been
responsible for every step of the project: from
ordering the flowers, to preparing the lists of
gravesites, to organizing volunteers and so on, all
while juggling babysitting two grandchildren.
Thank you also to Bert Hamakado who spent his
year updating the list of 100th veterans buried at
Punchbowl and making sure the vets on our lists were
in the right gravesites.
Arigatoo to Gary Hayakawa for recruiting high
school students from various Key Clubs who were
strong in muscle and numbers so we finished in
record time.
DOG CHAPTER NEWS by Joy Teraoka
Our Chapter President, Harry Nakayama, has been
nominated for President of the 100th Infantry Battalion
Veterans’ Executive Board of Directors for the coming
term. Let’s get
behind him and
support him. In fact,
let’s elect the
Nominations
Committee’s slate of
officers, as all of them
have demonstrated
dedication and
commitment to our
veterans’
organization.
There will be a Dog Chapter meeting on Saturday,
October 1 at 9:00 am to decide whether we will have a
Christmas Party this year. If we do decide to have a
Christmas Party, it will be on Sunday, December 18.
If you have any news to share about our Doggie
members, please call me at 218-7222 or email
[email protected]. Thank you.
HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS by Janice Sakoda, Daughter of Gary K. Uchida
What a nice time we had at our Fall Luncheon for
HQ/Medics at Fook Yuen. Some of the ladies told me
they were happy to get their “fix”
of pigs feet. I’m told it’s a source
of collagen that improves hair,
skin and nails. Joining us at the
luncheon were: Pat Akimoto,
Ken and Delores Akinaka,
Bessie Fukumoto, Carol and Wayne Matsunaga,
John Oki, Elsie Oshita. Also, Janice Trubitt and
Dot Tamashiro, Ed and Jan Sakoda.
A great big thank you to all who came to help with
the Joint Memorial Service. That includes helping
prep the flowers on Friday afternoon, placing flowers
at the gravesites of our 100th veterans, and attending
the Joint Memorial Service.
The election of the Executive Board of Directors
will be held Saturday, November 12. Please make
every effort to come vote, hear the latest about what’s
happening at the Clubhouse, and renew friendships.
Reminder: Save the date! Our annual HQ/Medics/
C Chapter Christmas party will be held Saturday,
December 17. December seems like a long way away
but time has a way of getting away from us so mark
your calendars now. Look for RSVP forms in the next
issue of the PPP.
GREEN THUMB CLUB by Janice Sakoda
Thank you to all who came
and helped place flowers on
the graves of the 100th
veterans. We appreciate your

Our next Green Thumb
Club meeting will be held on
October 29, 2016 starting at
11:00 a.m. We are trying to schedule a farm tour in
Waialua but details have not yet been worked out. If
you are on my mailing list, you’ll get an update from
me.
If you have any suggestions or ideas on
excursions, feel free to share it with me or any Green
Thumb member.
If you’re interested in being included in our email
group, please let me know
([email protected]) Dates and times may
change so please email me if you’re interested so we
can keep you updated of any last minute changes.

BAKER CHAPTER NEWS by Jayne Hirata
As was announced in last month’s PPP, a private
service was held for the late Judge Takashi Kitaoka
who passed away on August 9. The military funeral
honors at Punchbowl were conducted by the
100th/442d color guard and Maj. Gen. Robert E.
Lee. It was especially touching as the soldiers and
General Lee were part of the weekly Wine Gang
along with Judge so their words and actions had
even deeper meaning. Following this service, Judge
was laid to rest besides his beloved wife, Yukie, who
had predeceased him in 2013.
Judge would have enjoyed the Celebration of
Life his four sons, including 100th President Lloyd
Kitaoka, held in his memory at the JCCH. It was
an afternoon of “liquid refreshments” and lots of
laughter. The biggest laugh of the day came when
we were told that Judge said he was so proud of his
sons because none of them went to prison!
If you were looking for Baker President Ann
Kabasawa’s always ono brownies at the JMS
refreshment tent (I was told that many people were
on the hunt for them), they weren’t there and neither
was Ann as she had flown up to Oregon to attend her
niece’s wedding. Ann will have a short rest at home
and then she’ll lead the Hawaii group up to the Las
Vegas Mini-Reunion as she does each October.
Although the date to sign up has passed, if you are in
Vegas, you are welcome to stop by the 100th
Hospitality Room at the California if you are around.
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK by Jayne Hirata
HANAKOKOLELE
You’d think I would know by now that I cannot do
two things at once so putting together the PPP while
sending my twins off to college resulted in many errors
appearing in the September PPP. The biggest one was having the wrong
date of death for Judge Takashi Kitaoka who passed away on August 9
and not September 9. I could hear Judge telling me that if I had done that
in his courtroom back when I was an attorney, he would have thrown me
in contempt! There were several other places I mixed up August for
September and vice-versa so I apologize if anyone went to the right place
but at the wrong time. The good news is, the right twin got to the right
college.
EARLY PUBLICATION DATE FOR NOVEMBER PPP
I will be on the Mainland for the Mini-Reunion and two college
Family Weekends from October 15 to 31 so my goal is to have the
November PPP ready by October 14.
If you are submitting an article for the November issue, please send it
to [email protected] no later than Monday, October 10 by 12:00
noon. If I do not receive it by that date and time, I will not be able to
include it in the November PPP but will roll it over to the December PPP.
I apologize for the rush but I plan to enjoy my trip (well, the days in
Vegas anyway) so I’m not bringing my lap top.
SOS - SUPPORT OUR SOYA FUNDRAISER
I would like to invite everyone to the SOS - Support Our Soya -
Fundraiser at the Clubhouse on Sunday, October
9 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Five year old
Soya Miyagi was battling neuroblastoma, a
rare childhood cancer, when he passed away on
September 24. 100% of the proceeds will be
donated to Soya’s parents to pay for his medical
bills and other expenses.
We will have onolicious snacks at the Bake
Sale and beautiful greenery at the Plant Sale.
Almost everything at the Garage Sale will be $1. The Soya Shop in the
Board Room will have all new gift items including t-shirts by Michelle
Shiroma (A Co.), Okinawan t-shirts, treats by Snacks Galore and I’ll
have sock dolls too.
Admission is free with free parking at ‘Iolani School.
Sponsors for this event are the Friends of Soya Miyagi including Live
Yuimaaru and Able and Baker Chapters of the 100th Infantry Battalion.
Donations of baked goods (packaged but not priced), plants (priced),
and gently used or new items can be dropped off at the Clubhouse on
Saturday, October 8 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Baked goods may also be
dropped off on the day of the event from 8:00 am to 9:00 am. We can
also use boxes and bags for purchases and volunteer help on both days.
Please contact me at 366-3148 or e-mail [email protected] if you
have any questions.
