As the school grows, so does the number of teachers and I have been delighted with the quality of skilled personnel that have joined us from around the world, including the U.S.A., Australia and of course, the United Kingdom. Dear Parents,

This term has seen a significant growth of the school. We ae pleased to welcome more pupils from other Newton branches and other schools in Doha. We all come together as one international community that strives for excellence and celebrates success. As the school grows, so does the number of teachers and I have been delighted with the quality of skilled personnel that have joined us from around the world, including the U.S.A., Australia and of course, the United Kingdom. Our vision unites us in a drive for outstanding outcomes and encourages each young person to unite in our core values. We also come together to pay our respects to our beloved Qatar and celebrate this great nation and the values that we hold dear to us.

There have been challenges that the school has had to face. The significant disruption that was created by the drainage works outside the school has been a challenge for us all. I am also aware of the frustration that many parents have experienced by the lack of availability of key items of uniform. This has been recognized and concerns have been forwarded to manufacturers and suppliers.

As always, the wonderful and talented children that attend this school continue to be my inspiration and passion. Being the Principal at NBS Muraikh is the greatest privilege of my professional life. Early Years have been settling in to school and getting to know

the school rules and routines. The children are now beginning to understand

the concepts of listening, sharing and sitting nicely on the carpet. They are

making super improvements in their spoken English, learning new words every

day and gaining confidence to use them with their friends and teachers. This

term, they have thoroughly enjoyed the role play room and the fun learning

experience they can have in it.

Foundation Two have been doing ‘My Extraordinary World’ topic. They

went to Snow Dunes on a school visit to learn though play and experience the

snowy weather in the Artic. The children have been reading class stories such as

'Handra's Surprise' and sampling all of the delicious fruit in the story. They are

beginning to segment and blend CVC words and they are working very hard to

remember all of the tricky words. In mathematics, they have been counting,

writing and saying numbers up to 10 and also the 2D shapes; square, rectan-

gle, circle and triangles.

Foundation One have been learning about ‘Animals’ where they have

been looking at farm animals, Artic animals and animals that live in the Jungle.

They thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Teddy Bear’s picnic’ during Book Week and the

loved dressing up as their favorite book character. The children have been

working on counting up to 5 and they are getting very good at it.

This term the children and staff really enjoyed having their parents in for

‘Stay and Play’. This was an excellent opportunity to show their parents all of

the fun learning activities they do at home. The staff are very excited to have

parents connected to Tapestry and they cannot wait to see all of the learning

you do at home.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

Year One have had a busy first term!

At the beginning of term we celebrated Book Week. We held a reading breakfast

which was a great success, with parents, teachers and pupils reading books to each

other. We ended the week with a character dress-up which was great fun!

We took part in a ‘Big Morning Move’, the pupils dressed up in some of

Pudsey’s favourite colours, completed a guided workout outside and raised money

for BBC ‘Children in Need’ around the world!! Year One went on an educational

visit to see ‘Born to be Wild’ in the cinema, which consolidated our learning on

‘Animals’ and their habitats, in science. In English, our topics were ‘Labels, lists and

captions’, ‘Recounts’, ‘Poetry and Rhyme’ and ‘Stories with Repeated Phrases’. In

mathematics we learned about ‘Place Value and Number Bonds’, ‘Fractions’, ‘Time’,

‘2D and 3D Shapes’, ‘Measurement’. Our humanities included ‘Old and New Toys’

and ‘My Local Area’. The pupils got great enjoyment out of these topics and

engaged in great conversation, sharing ideas and opinions with one another. Year

One have shown great progression throughout this term and we hope that they will

continue to grow and learn as we approach term two.

We have had a lot of fun this term in Year Two. In English we have read

stories about the jungle, safari and Africa. We have learnt to write stories, diaries

and newspapers. Including a newspaper report on the Great Fire of London. We

have improved our writing skills to include more exciting adjectives and

punctuation such as question marks, exclamation mark and speech marks. In

mathematics, we have looked at place value and number lines, addition and

subtraction and multiplication and division. We have touched on topics such as

shape, time and measurement. We have enjoyed completing challenging problem

solving question and using our numeracy skills practically. In Science, we have

covered the topic of habitats as well as plants and other living things. We enjoyed

researching habitats of wild animals and the habitat project at the end of mid-term

showed the children had learnt a lot. We have learnt about plants, we have

planted sunflowers to study their growth; we have conducted experiments with

celery to see how plants absorb water and learnt where our fruit and vegetables

come from. In humanities, we have learnt about Kenya, and how it is different than

us in Qatar. We have learnt to compare to sets of information and pick out the

similarities and differences. We have learnt how to read the temperature on

thermometers and have looked at the different climates in Qatar, Kenya and the

UK. We have learnt the history of the Great Fire of London, being detectives find-

ing out who was to blame. We have used organization skills to sequence the

days and the major events during the Fire. In art, we have created African patterns,

Savanna desert sunset pictures and studied the work of Jackson Pollock. We have

had such a busy first term, but already looking forward to next year!!

Key Stage 2 (Years 3,4,5,6)

In Year 3, the children participated in various interactive and engaging activities. We

have explored magnets and forces, where the children explored the classroom, searching for

magnetic and non-magnetic materials; they have also enhanced their learning and understanding

of rocks which included creating our own rocks using a variety of materials. Additionally,

the children participated in a Humanities project which involved them creating a volcano or

earthquake presentation which, not only, served as a tool for consolidating their knowledge of

key concepts, but it has been incredibly useful for preparing for the challenges that they will face

during their Term 1 examinations. The children spoke with great confidence and as a result they

are participating more in classroom discussions and enhancing their social skills. Furthermore, to

reward the children for their efforts, Year 3 participated in a visit to the cinema to

watch Abdominal which developed their learning and understanding of living things and the

environment.

During term 1, Year 4 have begun to develop their independence and creative thinking

through various discussions, debates and experiments inside and outside of the classroom. They

have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Vikings in history and the world around them in

Geography. Similarly, they have been working towards improving their writing skills by writing

various narrative stories and recounts which have linked to their humanities topics. During

mathematics lessons, the children have worked on place value in 4 digit numbers and have begun

to look at equivalent fractions and division. In science they have completed work on animals and

their habitats and they have conducted various experiments on the digestive system which helped

them to develop a better understanding of how the body breaks down the food they eat. At the

end of term, the children enjoyed a trip to the cinema at the Villagio mall to watch a movie which

linked to our school values of respect and diversity. The Year 4 children have worked extremely

hard this term and Mr Morrison and Miss Boyle are very proud of their efforts!

In Year 5 we have had a very busy first term. In mathematics we extended our

understanding of place value, practised adding 3 and 4-digit numbers together and checking our

answers using the inverse function. The children also really enjoyed learning about angles,

measuring and drawing angles using a protractor and constructing circles using a compass. In

English writing this term we produced a variety of works including myths, instructions, poems,

explanation texts and newspaper reports. In particular, the children enjoyed The Moon Landing

of 1969 and wrote fantastic newspaper reports on the event and even had an interview day

pretending to be the NASA astronauts. In science we learned all about Earth and Space which

linked well with our Newspaper report writing and we also studied the human lifecycle. In

humanities we studied the Ancient Greeks, Water Cycle, rivers, mountains and biomes. It has been

a very enjoyable first term and we look forward to Term Two.

Year 6 have had a fantastic start to the year and have been learning about different

emergency services in PSHE. This culminated in a visit from QISC to talk to the children about fire

safety and Saad Al Hajri being dressed up as a firefighter. Children have also been learning

about the rainforest and the destruction happening in the rainforest. To support this topic, we

took the children to see 'Born to be Wild' at Novo Cinema, Mall of Qatar. Children

have spent the term learning about the Mayans and the Mayan civilisation. They have

made Mayan masks and print designs using the Mayan symbols.

The student council has been a valuable voice within

Secondary. Through them, we have acquired more lockers

and improvements in the quality of canteen provision. It was

very rewarding to see the Year Seven enjoy their visit to

Snow World at the end of the term in recognition of all their

hard work. The examinations have consolidated the great

progress that the students have made. It is a considerable

change from Year Six into Year Seven and the challenges

can be high. However, with cooperation from the teachers

and the parents, there has been real progress.

The Year Eight has grown in confidence and maturity.

There is a focus on academic outcomes and I know that the

teachers are always happy to receive any queries that you

might have. The Year Nine continue to do themselves proud

and the Year Ten have set the example for which everyone

should follow. Their role as prefects has proved to be a signif-

icant support to all the staff.

It is important to the school that Islamic values and

Qatari culture and history are recognized and celebrated.

Ms. Marwa, our Arabic coordinator, is always happy to re-

ceive any queries that you may have about the Arabic and

Islamic syllabus.

In Arabic Lessons & Arabic activities

Students have undertaken a variety of activities this term in Arabic,

Islamic and Qatar History lessons.

In addition, we visited the Qatari National Convention Center attending the World Innovation Summit for Education in the presence of Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al Thani. This was a great success and it illustrated the success of ‘Education

Above All’ to provide 10 million children around the world with access to education.

We also took assemblies for all year groups to encourage the appreciation

of Qatari values. It was clear that students gained much from this participation.

We did (Pray for Rain) Istisqa on Thursday 14th November. We are grateful to all parents who attended this and supported us with this. Our students

worked very hard work for their examinations and we wish them great success.

As always, our Arabic week was hugely successful. We are proud of all our students and their participation. There were many activities. The highlight was Qatar National Day. We appreciate all student and parent support. We are also very grateful to our Principal, Mr. Wilson, who is always enthusiastic of our traditions and culture. He is always striving to ensure that Islamic values and Qatar history is

celebrated and supported within the school community.

At NBS Muraikh we believe passionately in the love of reading throughout all year groups. It has been proven that a child who actively reads, progresses across all subjects. We want our children to strive for excellence and learn to love and value books and stories. Reading can spark a child's imagination and stimulate curiosity. It can also help

develop a child's social skills and communication skills.

We are delighted that our pupil’s reading attainment is progressing tremendously.

We believe this is a result of a number of different things such as, the continued

support from our parents, our fun and very successful ‘Reading Breakfast’, and our

fantastic and hardworking pupils. This term we enjoyed 'Book Week' and a visit

from a famous author, Jonathan Meres. The children gained a lot from these

experiences and were shown how reading can be fun and exciting. We

would like to thank all parents and pupils for their support and efforts

during all reading events this term and inform you all that there

will be another 'Reading Breakfast' on Thursday 9th January.

We hope to see you all there.

NBS MURAIKH FOOTBALL ACADEMY 2019

This term saw the formation of the NBS Muraikh Football Academy. Over the last 10 weeks more

than 60 children from Years 1-9 came and practised their skills. The academy was an extremely

enjoyable experience for both staff and pupils during which children learned, developed and

began to master various skills within the sport. The focus of the sessions were based around the 4

pillars of Football Coaching Technical, Tactical, Physical and Mental development. Primarily the

focus was on technical development (ball control, passing, shooting etc.) while also aiming to

improve mental (self-esteem and confidence) and physical development (speed, coordination).

Overall it was a hugely successful first term, the participation and effort levels of the children could

not be faulted and we look forward to resuming again in the New Year.

In boys sport, ten pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 participated in an inter-Newton Tag

Rugby competition here at NBS Muraikh. The day was a huge success and it was a great

opportunity for all of the boys to showcase their skills and represent their respective schools,

which they all did impeccably. Each game was contested fairly and competitively with great

sportsmanship and a lot of quality tag ruby displayed by each school. Well done to all

involved!

An international community of learners striving for excellence and celebrating success

Our school represents one of the Newton Group schools. Our

school provides an overwhelming experience for the students. It

harmonizes excellent quality of discipline which is provided by the

Principal and the teachers. They aim to provide us with the

opportunities to excel. They allow us the chance to appreciate and

benefit from what we, the students, have been provided with. Our

dear Principal determines the rules of the school to be followed. Our

teachers are compassionate and help us to feel diverse within a

comfortable environment in the school. I want to thank everyone that

puts in effort for us to feel the way we feel about our school, from the

our Principal, to our cherished teachers and to our positive classmates.

We will always stand together assured that “We are an international

community of learners, striving for excellence and celebrating success.”

Regards, Aya Arabi Katbi, 10 Red (Head Girl)

From the moment I stepped into Newton British School Muraikh

in August 2018, I have found the school to be one of the best

decisions I have ever made! This school embeds its mission in all

aspects of school life. From setting realistic targets for all pupils, to

challenging and encouraging them to do their best. This coincides with

the great quality of education provided by the teachers and their

continued effort that they put into lessons by giving us the

opportunity to enjoy each and every lesson. Teachers have an innate

ability to give us a better understanding of the subject material

through fun activities which help us to fully understand the subject.

Thank you, Khaled Sherif 10 Blue (Headboy)
