The Magic FluteWith an enchanting blend of visual wizardry and whimsical comedy, Matthew Wild’s dream-like staging in Michael Mitchell’s poetic designs gives new expression to Mozart’s fable about the power of music. Protected by the magic of their enchanted flute, Tamino and Pamina discover that only music can lead them ‘through death’s dark night’. A young cast of outstanding singers from Cape Town Opera and the University of Cape Town Opera School, usher in summer with Mozart’s most joyful and uplifting masterpiece.

Nice Coat (Lekker Jas)Soli Philander’s Nice Coat is about – as he puts it – his Cape Town. Born out of a desire for a narrative about Cape Town – the place of his birth, his youth, his heart – that didn’t serve a political agenda; wasn’t an exercise in attracting tourists; and did not disregard the daily, stark realities that so many Capetonians trying to survive have to embrace daily.
Philander is adamant about the unique ‘sound’ of Cape Town – ‘there is a rhythm to it, a beat’ – that he maintains is the essence of being Capetonian. In his conversations about; his criticism of; and his tribute to Cape Town, he seamlessly plays with word and intonation, idiom and phrase, rhyme and reason, to engage mind, memory and emotion in a delicately-humoured, hour-long rhyme.

TORDRETORDRE opens rather mischievously with music from Funny Girl, William Wyler’s American musical film. Two dancers come charging onto the stage and, as they do so, we smile at the sweeping body beautiful archetypes, which lay behind so many Broadway fantasies.

The Frog PrinceA long time ago a handsome young Prince rode off to seek his fortune. Tired and thirsty, he stopped at a well for some water. At the well, the friendly Frogs warned him that the well belonged to a Witch and that she would turn him into a Frog if he drank the water! But he did not listen!
The Prince drank the water and turned into a Frog – and only the kiss of a Beautiful Princess would be able to break the spell.
Join us and help the Prince and Princess outwit the Witch.

The world-famous Imperial Ice Stars, who have won international critical acclaim and five-star reviews with their previous tours of The Sleeping Beauty on Ice, The Nutcracker on Ice, and Swan Lake on Ice, are set to thrill South African audiences at the Artscape Opera House from 10 January 2018 with their magical production, Cinderella on Ice. The innovative Imperial Ice Stars specialise in performing theatrical ice-skating in the intimacy of the theatre. They are renowned for their daring displays on the ice, and their unique style of story-telling.
Cinderella on Ice – one of the most artistically-challenging ice shows ever created – is a dramatic new interpretation of the classic tale. It was conceived and choreographed by award-winning ice director, Tony Mercer, alongside three of the world’s most respected ice coaches, Evgeny Platov (dual Olympic gold medallist and four-time World Champion), Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski (the 2006 & 2007 ice dancing World Champions).
Performed on a specially-created stage frozen at minus 15 degrees Celsius, Cinderella on Ice boasts stunning special effects including fire and rain, flying, magnificent projected scenery depicting a Siberian town square, and a black and silver art deco theatre. The stunning costumes are designed by Albina Gabueva, head designer at Moscow’s famed Stanislavsky Theatre.

Dear PatronsArtscape Theatre Centre has just commenced with the front of house foyer upgrades. While it may look like an ugly duckling for a while over the next few months, it will soon be transformed into a beautiful swan.We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience it may cause while we work to make your experience more memorable.Kindly note that the upgrades, reconstruction and new foyer developments will not affect your current theatre experience. All scheduled performances including our bumper Festive Season productions will be staged because ‘the show must go on’.Thanking you for your considerationMarlene le RouxArtscape CEO
