Movements made in Western CanadaProgressive Dairyman Editor Karen Lee
Both British Columbia and Manitoba grew in herd size enough to out-rank Saskatchewan and Alberta, respectively. British Columbia’s average herd grew by 12 cows to 172, ranking it second in the country for herd size. Alberta’s average herd size shrunk by one cow and Manitoba’s gained nine cows to 149, moving it to a ranking of fourth.
Even though Alberta decreased in herd size, it did have the most noticeable increase in milk per cow compared to last year at 8.7 percent. It now ranks second in the country in that category. New Brunswick also grew in milk per cow enough to increase in ranking over Prince Edward Island.
Growth in the installation of robotic milking facilities remained steady throughout most of the country when compared to the two previous years, with the exception of two provinces. Quebec installed only half the number of robots in 2015 than it did in 2013 and 2014. Meanwhile British Columbia installed robots at three times the rate it had in the previous two years.
In terms of trade, the amount of imports remained the same, while exports dropped to widen Canadian’s dairy trade balance to -$689 million. This extends the negative dairy trade trend established since 2009. PD
