Happy Hands Presentation By Mary Malzkuhn on October 5, 2011

- by Patricia Beech -

On October 5, Mary Malzkuhn presented “Signing Their

Lives Away: The Fame and Misfortune of the Men Who

Signed The Declaration of Independence” based on the

book by Denise Kiernan & Joseph D’Agnese. She focused

on 7 Founding Fathers of the United States:

* John Adams

* Josiah Bartlett

* Benjamin Franklin

* Elbridge Gerry

* John Hancock

* Samuel Huntington

* Thomas Jefferson

John Adams had a big role in persuading Congress to declare independence.

He was the 2nd President of the United States. He assisted Thomas Jefferson

with drafting the United States Declaration of Independence. John Quincy Ad-

ams (one of his chidren) became the 6th President of the United States.

Josiah Bartlett was an American physician and statesman. He represented

New Hampshire when signing the Declaration of Independence. His position

made him the second to sign, just after John Hancock.

URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josiah_Bartlett

Benjamin Franklin was appointed to the committee that drafted the Declara-

tion of Independence. He was the first United States Postmaster General. He

had other titles, which were leading author, printer, political theorist, politi-

cian, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplo-

mat. He invented the lighting rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage

odometer, and the glass “armonica”. He formed the first public lending library

in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania.

Continued — Happy Hands Presentation

by Mary Malzkuhn

Elbridge Gerry was one of the signers for the Declaration of Independence

and the Articles of Confederation. He was Vice-President under James Madi-

son during 1813-1814. The word “gerrymander” was created when he got

the Massachusetts legislature to redraw the boundaries to favor his party.

URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbridge_Gerry

John Hancock is remembered for his large and stylish signature on the United

States Declaration of Independence. According to legend, he signed his name

largely and clearly so that King George could read it without his spectacles.

Because he was president of the Continental Congress, he was the first to

sign.

Samuel Huntington signed the Declaration of Independence, representing

Connecticut. He also served as President of the Continental Congress from

1779 to 1781. He was the 3rd Governor of Connecticut from 1786 until his

death.

URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Huntington_(statesman)

Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independ-

ence. He also authored the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom. He was

Governor of Virginia during 1779-1781. He was the 1st United States Secre-

tary of State during 1790-1793. He was the 3rd President of the United

States during 1801-1809. He spoke five languages. He founded the Univer-

sity of Virginia. He designed Monticello. He was a farmer, architect, and in-

ventor. Among his inventions was Great Clock powered by the Earth’s gravitational pull on

Revolutionary War cannonballs.
