    ImprBrain n interview withG a r y N u l l P h . D .

Gary Null is one of the founding leaders of the health food movement in the1970s, and host of the longest running health radio show in America. He hasinspired thousands of Americans to adopt healthier living habits, proving thatgetting older doesn t m ean you have to look or feel run-d ow n. Ga ry N ull is theauthor of 7 8 books on a wide variety of health topics such as anti-aging, naturalhealing, fitness, and nutrition. His latest book,GaryNull s Mind Power showspeople how to rejuvenate their brain and memory naturally.

In your neiv book. M ind Power , yo uwrite that we don tnecessarily have tolosebrain unction as we age. That s right. We now know th at thereare many things we can do to stop g/y-cation,which is a primary way that thebody ages, creating what we call non-functioning proteins. W he n you eat thecommon diet, you create these glycatedby-products, and that s destructive tothe body s biochemistry. But by creat-ing a more challenging environmentfor ourselves, we can stop the agingprocess or slow it dow n. W e are doingtoo many things that are passive. In regards to mental function, is itcorrect to s a y , U s e it orlose if fThat s correct. Television, reading, andmovies are all passive. W e need to beproblem-solving, doing hobbies. Weneed to relax ourselves in better waysto help our whole system rebalance.Isn t there a link between exercise andbrain function? That s c orrect. Exercise is a missinglink, b ut it s the consistency of the ex-ercise that s im porta nt. I recom mendsix days a week, up to 45 minutes aday aerobically, another half hour withresistance exercise. If you re do ing itrigh t, th ere are ma ny benefits. You rehitti ng t he m uscles, you re hitting the

anaerobic and aerobic systems, andyou re increasing the detoxificationprocess of the liver and ki dney s. You rerebalancing mood hormones, like en-dorphin s, in th e brain. You re lower-ing your blood pressure, and loweringyour cholesterol. You re ra ising yourmetabolism and h eart beat while you reexercising, and also making your rest-ing pulse lower. You re stren gthen ingthe cardiovascular system, an d you reburning intramuscular fat. Youre alsogaining more strength, endurance, stamina, and range of motion.Yo u ' v e written that there a r e over 1,000substancesthat m ay cause brain toxicity, and thus a decline in mental function.Which are the most common? Most cleaning materials are full of tox-i n s . Then there s chlorine in the water, which is a very strong neurotoxin thatdestroys brain cells. Mercury, which isin fish like swordfish and tuna, is alsoa neurotoxin. Alu min um is toxic; leadis toxic; copper from copper pipes inhigh a moun ts is toxic. These things areall toxic to the brain cells; they destroyneurons or interfere in their proper use. Then of course there s cigarette smoke. There was a time when environmentalillness was not considered legitimate, but today there s whole science divi-sions focusing on it.

What type o f water filtration do yourecommend? The best type of water filtration is onetha t goes beyond charcoal. Charco alallows bacteria and viruses through intremendous amounts, as well as para-sites like giardia and cryptosporidium .You need to have a triple filter withbaked-in silver, because that will havebroad-spectrum anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. And you need it to bedown to 0.5 micron filtration, whichwill trap most of the other sediment, like heavy metals and pesticides. You mentioned plaque build-up in thebrain. Is there a connection betweenhigh-fat diets and Alzheimer sdiseaseY e s there is. At its very core,Alzheimer s is a ma tter of steroid plaquebuilding up in the brain, and this comesfrom inflamm atory responses. So themore things that cause inflammationin th e body, th e more you re going tohave that happen. An ythin g you cando that can help neutralize or lessenthe impact is going to he good for you. That means getting rid of commercialwater that has fluoridation and chlo-rine, and getting rid of fried foods thatcreate heterocyclic amines, which is avery dangerous carcinogenic chemicaland causes inflammation in the brain.

Interview continued from page 17If you stop all the caffeine, carbon-ated beverages, artificial sweeteners, processed carbohydrates, dairy andmeat products, then that will stopthe inflammatory agents from gettingin the body. Also taking things likehighly concentrated D H A fish oil,and green tea, DHEA, L-carnitine,vitamin C, lycopene, etcthese thingshelp trap additional free radicals, neu-tralizing them, protecting your body.Antioxidants are like the bullet-proofvest to protect against free radicals, which are the bullets. You mention cbronic inflammation. How big of a problem is tbisfIt s the num ber one cause of physicaldisease in the world. It s related to al-most all diseases: hea rt disease, cancer, dementia, Alzheim er s, Parkinson s,multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, fibro-cystic breast disease, etc.Wbicb vitamins and minerals do youtbink are the most lacking in tbe average American diet?Vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin C,and calcium and magnesium. Peopleshould take a high-potency daily mul-tiple, and a high-potency B complex. And you want something that doesn have all the artificial excipients, bind-ers, and fillers. W hat s im portan t isthe level of bio-availability. In fact, one of the worst sources of most nu-trients is directly from food, becauseof people s poo r dige stion. The averageperson doesn t have a good digestivesystemthey have a leaky gut, or theyhave over-stressed their digestive sys-tem because they have been eating toomu ch food, or there s an imba lance inthe acid/pH ratio. Mo st people s dietstend to be far too acid ic, and they reeating too much fat, so the food doesn thave a chance to get through in a prop-erly absorbed form. The impo rtant is-sue around supplementation is takingthe time to get an evaluation, a blood

chemistry, to see what you actually need, because this wholeidea tha t one size fits a l l just doesn't work. You've written tbat C oQlO is one of tbe most important nu-trients for people over tbirty. Wby is tbisfIt's because thecellsofthe bod y dim inish in thecapacityto create energy, andeverything in thebody runsoffen-ergy. Coenzyme QlO ensures that your cells have enoughenergy. It s nodifferent tha n acar: ifyou're get ting verypoor performance from your transmission, your carburetor, your air filter, then you're just going to chug along at a lowercapacity. That's no different tha n what's going on inside thecells of the body. The mitochondria are energy factors of thebody. You have from a few doze n to a few hund red per cell. The brain and the he art have the most, because they use themost energy. The brain doesn't weigh but about two po undsor so, and yet it uses up to 2 0% of the total body energy.Sobecause it's so active all the time, inorder n ot to suffer frombrain fatigue orlossofreal active co gnitio n, you needtohave what is called ATP,oradenosine triphosp hate, w hichis actually the precursor to creating energy. Coen zym e QlOensures that your cells actually have that extra energy, andas aresult, the hea rt m uscle works more efficiently, asdoesthe brain. Iwould recom mend the average person take 100milligrams of CoQlO, three times a day.Don't you a dvocate tbe elimination ofsugar from our diets?Y e s , no one should be having refined sugar; it's just too de -structive.I believeweshould educate thepublic honestlyabout the effects of sugar. People need toknow its conn ec-tiontocancer, he art dise ase, digestive disorders , and over-grow th of Candida and yeast.Sbould we eliminate a ll meat and dairy rom tbe diet?Y e s . M ea t is notdesigned forhuman consumption.Wesecrete enzymes under the tongue which help dissolve andbreak down carbohy drates. And if you look at the longest-lived and the healthiest people, they're vegetarians, not mea'teaters. Dairy products are a throw-off by-product of th ebody of the anim al. It's not meant for hum an consum ptionbut for baby cows. Ithas excess amo unts of calcium, phos-phorous, sodium, andproteinm ore than what a humanbaby or human being requires, and it's highly allergenic. How mucb do you tbink str ssaffects our beaitb?I would say that 30% ofeverything t hat happenstoyouisbased on stress reactionsinthe body. ^For more information from Gary Null, visit his website at www.garynull.com
