    PUBLIC HEALTH

    (MASTER OF SCIENCE)Public Health is the art and science o preventing disease, prolonging lie and promoting health. Public Health is not only concerned

    with maintenance o health by reducing or eliminating disease risks and environmental health hazards, improving social conditions, and

    encouraging healthy behaviours and liestyles, it also encompasses the distribution and optimal management o healthcare services.

    The programme will provide students rom a wide range o health and related proessional backgrounds with the knowledge and skills

    in public health sciences and related disciplines which will make them more eective contributors in their ield o healthcare.

    Philosophy

    The Masters o Science in Public Health is based on the World Health Organisations principles o Health or All; they are:

    equity intersectorial collaboration health promotion and disease prevention

    international cooperation community participation

    Who will benefit from the programme?

    The Master o Science in Public Health programme is suited or those who want to advance in their careers in a related ield. They are:

    a. Medical doctors b. Nurses c. Health oicers d. Environmental health oicerse. Health service managers . Hospital administrators g. Nutritionists h. Health education oicers

    i. Environmental and health engineers j. Pharmacists

    Public health professionals today are faced with both old and new public health

    challenges. They range from infectious diseases such as influenza and the HIV/

    AIDS pandemic, chronic disease epidemics, cancer and obesity. The challenges also

    include the health of our increasingly elderly populations, high-risk behaviors that

    endanger our health such as smoking and substance abuse, the safety of our

    water and our food, as well as the threats of natural and man-made disaster

    including bioterrorism. The IMU Master of Science in Public Health prepares oneto face these challenges through multidisciplinary approaches that apply the

    latest scientific knowledge, common sense and teamwork to solve important

    health problems. Students in the programme will obtain a population-based

    perspective on health besides a curriculum focused on the core disciplines

    of epidemiology, biostatistics, management sciences and the environmental,

    biological, behavioral and social factors that influence the health of populations

    and communities.

    01 WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE PROGRAMME?

    On completion, the student should possess an understanding o the science and art o

    Public Health including concepts o health and disease, and the actors that inluence them.

    This acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitude will enable the student to practise their

    knowledge in a wide range o service and academic settings.

    02 WHAT ARE THE PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES?

    The programme enables the student to understand the principle and practice o Public

    Health through the application o:

    1. Knowledge and understanding o the main disciplines o Public Health, including

    statistics, epidemiology, health system management and health economics,

    health protection, medical sociology, communicable disease control, policydevelopment and occupational and environmental health.

    2. Important skills related to public health, including the use o inormation technology,

    research methods, analysis and interpretation o data and inormation, critical

    appraisal and reasoning, strategic management, creative problem solving,

    multidisciplinary team working and eective written and oral communication.

    3. Development o a holistic attitude in solving health problems in the community

    and cultivating intellectual curiosity and lie-long learning in meeting the

    challenges o public health in the 21st century.

    03 WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

    The minimum entry requirements are as follows:-

    1. A medical degree rom a recognised university; or

    2. A Bachelors degree or its equivalent from related disciplines with CGPA

    2.50 and above.

    3. A Bachelors degree or its equivalent from related disciplines with CGPA

    below 2.50 but above 2.00 and with at least 3 years o experience inrelated disciplines may be considered.

    English Language Requirements:All students are normally required to provide evidence of their ability

    in the English Language in order to study in IMU. The standard English

    Proficiency requirements are usually overall band score of IELTS 6.5 or

    TOEFL 550 (PBT) or 79 (IBT) or MUET band 4. KEYFACTS

    04 WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME?

    The programme is a 1 years ull-time programme taught in English running over

    3 semesters. The programme is divided into 12 modules and the modules in each semester

    are as ollows:-

    Semesters 1 and 2 each comprises twelve weeks o active learning ollowed by oneweek o assessment. Semester 3 is or undertaking the dissertation. The programme

    oers the option o ull-time study over 1 years, or part-time over a maximum o

    3 years.

    The ull-time Format is a concentrated 18-month course o study at IMU that begins

    each year in early March/September. The programme is structured to provide

    the core requirement in the academic programme starting in March/September.

    The programme consists o 2 Semesters o theory ollowed by a 3rd Semester o

    dissertation writing and electives.

    The part-time Format oers modules that are available during weekends in a

    classroom setting. The students should complete the degree within three (3)

    years. The programme begins in March/September at IMU together with ull-

    time students but the classes are held during the weekends to cater to working

    students. Assignments and assessments or both part-time and ull-time students will

    be similar.

    05 WHAT ARE THE TEACHING/LEARNING APPROACHES USED? The programme is taught in close collaboration with the Ministry of

    Health, Kuala Lumpur City Council, Non Governmental Organisations

    and other public health related institutions.

    Teaching and learning methods vary in line with the objectives of

    the course but they include a range o methods including didactic

    lectures, guided and independent group exercises, practicals,

    seminars, workshops and problem-based sel directed learning.

    Field visits with hands-on experience in observing the public

    health challenges that are currently aced by the community are anintegral part o the course.

    E-learning approaches are used extensively and includes web-

    based e-learning courses, online simulation and virtual mentoring.

    06 HOW ARE THE STUDENTS ASSESSED?

    Assessment is through class tests, practicals, reports essays, problem-based learning,

    projects, dissertation and written examination.

    07 WHO ARE THE TEACHING STAFF?

    The teaching aculty relect a multidisciplinary background and are drawn rom the

    Division of Community Medicine, Division of Population Health, Division of Human

    Biology and Postgraduate Studies. The teaching aculty have many years o academic

    and service experience and a large number o them have also served in the World

    Health Organisation in various capacities. In addition, honorary lecturers are invited

    rom the Ministry o Health and the public and private health service organisations.

    08 WHAT DISTINGUISHES THE IMU MSC (PUBLIC HEALTH)FROM THE OTHER MSC PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMMES?

    The full time 1 year format, where students interact with our faculty.

    ABOUT IMU

    IMU Bukit Jalil Campus

    The International Medical University (IMU) is Malaysias rst and most established private medical andhealthcare university with over 20 years o dedicated ocus in healthcare education.     In its continual quest for academic excellence, moving into research was a natural progressionwith medical and healthcare-related research, as well as medical education being areas o

    key ocus. IMUs research eorts are expected to be urther enhanced now that the Instituteo Research, Development and Innovation (IRDI) has been launched in September 2012.

    The university had a major breakthrough in 2010 with the start of its Healthcare Centres whichallowed IMUs staff and students to receive and treat patients. The Healthcare Centres,which serve as a teaching site or IMU students, bring the disciplines o allopathic (Western)medicine and those o complementary and alternative medicine together under one roo.

    Today IMU is an integrated medical and healthcare institution, oering education, healthcareand research in partnership with some o the worlds most respected individuals anduniversities in the eld o medicine and healthcare.
