Why study Music at UCSI?

Established in 1990, UCSI University's Institute of Music is Malaysia's premier music school in both the classical and contemporary fields. The Institute has empowered students to chart careers in music for more than 25 years and it is at the heart of the Malaysian music industry. There is perhaps no other music school in Malaysia that is more constantly and consistently referred to than the Institute of Music. Much of this stems from the gold standard the Institute has set, both in academia and the industry. Many of the who's who in the Malaysian music circle teach, once taught or studied at the Institute. The Institute is acknowledged as one of Asia's leading music schools and it actively collaborates with leading musicians, music schools and conservatories around the world.

With the vision of being the leading music institute in the region, the Institute of Music aim to produce leaders and competent practitioners for the music profession. ONN SANAlumnus of Bachelor of Classical Music (Hons)

Onn San was nominated for 5 times the Kakiseni’s Boh Cameronian Arts Award and won 3 awards in the same event. He is also the first Malaysian nominated for “Best Original Film Score” at the 56th Golden Horse Award for the film, The Garden of Evening Mists (TGOEM).

JEREMY YEOAlumnus of Bachelor of Classical Music (Hons)

Youngest Malaysian to clinch first place in the prestigious American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music (Advanced category) and performeda gala summer concert at the Carnegie Hall in 2013

ALTON WONG Current student of Bachelor of Contemporary Music (Hons)

Invited participant of the Commonwealth Youth Dialogue Conference 2019. He also has led a jazz band to the final round of the Singapore International Jazz Battle and Forum 2018 as the only Malaysian jazz band.

AINA ABDULAlumna of Bachelor of Contemporary Music (Hons)

Won the Senior Grand Champion Vocalist of the World Championships of Performing Arts Hollywood California in 2014. She is also crowned as the first runner-up for Mentor Legend 2019. Her song ‘Sumpah’ was nominated in the Anugerah Juara Lagu 34

Event HighlightsUCSI International Piano Festival and Competition (IPFC)

UCSI University International Piano Festival and Competition (UCSI IPFC) aims to raise the musical standards within the country and region by providing opportunities for young musicians to perform in public and grow in their performing experience. The contestants will also receive constructive feedback from the adjudication panel of well-established international and local pianists. Through UCSI IPFC, we aspire to promote music appreciation and engage the performers, parents, teachers and students through recitals, master classes, and lectures.

UCSI Piano Pedagogy Conference (PPC)UCSI University Piano Pedagogy Conference (UCSI PPC) are committed to bring together piano pedagogues from the classical and contemporary streams. Through UCSI PPC, we provide a platform for sharing ideas and perspectives about piano pedagogy among acclaimed pianists, professors, pedagogues and students. In fact, we provide opportunities for networking and future partnerships between presenters and conference registrants. Additionally, UCSI PPC is a platform for instructors, students and music fans to discover and purchase music scores, method books, pedagogical materials as well as teaching aids and music accessories.

. Duration: 15 minutes

. Memorisation is strongly encouraged for scholarship application.

. Classical Music: THREE pieces of contrasting styles (e.g. Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Modern)

. Classical Voice: THREE pieces of contrasting styles in at least TWO different languages (e.g. German, Italian, French, English, Chinese)

. Contemporary Music: THREE pieces of contrasting styles (preferably contemporary styles – jazz, pop, rock, Latin, popular styles, etc.)

. Classical Music: THREE pieces of contrasting styles (e.g. Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Modern)

. Classical Voice: THREE pieces of contrasting styles in at least TWO different languages (e.g. German, Italian, French, English, Chinese)

Notes:(i) String/woodwind/voice majors are required to bring along their own piano accompanist. If unavailable, one may be engaged from the institute for a fee. Contemporary music candidates may choose to use minus-one recordings to accompany their audition. Please bring your own laptop, tablet or other similar audio-playback device. The Institute will prepare a 1/8 – 1/8-inch audio connection.(ii) Composition majors are required to submit a portfolio of compositions and pass the audition on a major instrument.
