IMZ GOLDEN PRAGUE PREMIERES AT THE 49TH

INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL GOLDEN PRAGUEAs in years past, the IMZ accompanied the 49th ITF Golden Prague Festival

and competition by organising the Golden Prague Premieres and a workshop in

cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

The screenings of the Golden Prague Premieres took place in the Small Hall

of Žofín Palace including the following programmes:

Golden Prague Premieres I: Flat Pack – The Musical, SVT, Sweden – A musical

„furniture saga“ about „the wonder of Sweden“ – Ingvar Kamrad, the founder of

IKEA. The score is by Erik Gedeon, who also directed this performance from Malmö

Stadsteater.

Golden Prague Premieres II: C(H)OEURS, Euroarts, Germany – Musical theatre by

Alain Platel. For years, the tension between the group and the individual has been

the central theme in Platel's performances. In C(H)OEURS he examines – together

with his dancers and the Teatro Real choir – how „dangerously beautiful“ a group

can be.

Both productions were enthusiastically received. Lively discussions with the

filmmakers/producers following the screenings underscored the success of the

Golden Prague Premieres 2012.

On Tuesday 16 October, an EBU and IMZ  workshop was dedicated to

“Rights management in the digital era“. Once again, the EBU and the IMZ

decided to join forces to promote and strengthen the arts in the audio-visual media!

After presentations by Peter Goethals (EBU), Malte Ludin (Tele München Gruppe),

Pavlina Kvapilova (Česká televize) and Peter Maniura (BBC) the presenters and further

panellists – Bernd Hellthaler (EuroArts Music), Chris Hunt (Iambic Productions) and

Lothar Mattner (WDR) discussed in a high profile debate the challenges and

opportunities in social media for broadcasters and the private sector.

Generally, the whole festival is open to anyone interested in high-quality music and dance

programmes and films on the TV screen. Festival participants have the chance to view all

competition programmes submitted to the 49th ITF Golden Prague in the festival's video

library.

EUROARTS

Happy Birthday, Daniel Barenboim!

Just in time for his seventieth birthday, Daniel Barenboim has received the prestigious

German ECHO Klassik for his life's work. The versatile pianist and conductor

renowned for leaving his musical mark – as it is honoured by numerous awards, among

them seven Grammys – has been active on the concert stage since the age of seven.

In 1999 Barenboim established the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which is

made up of young musicians from eight ethnic groups from the Arab world and Israel.

With the recording of the memorable concert in Ramallah in August 2005,

together with Paul Smaczny's award-winning documentary Knowledge Is The

Beginning, plus a conversation between Barenboim and the orchestra's co-founder

Edward Said, EuroArts has put

COLLEGNO

Karsten Riedel & Franui: Fool Of Love

We were overjoyed when we learned about the lucky encounter between

Franui and Karsten Riedel: The “musicbanda” from the tiny East

Tyrolean village Innervillgraten, equipped with a hammered dulcimer, harp,

zither, wind and string instruments, make music with the pop singer from

Bochum-Wattenscheid, who played with ska, punk and reggae bands

before he started working for the theatre. Eventually they launched their

Shakespeare Sonnet Show at the Burgtheater (on stage for the

2012/13 season) in Vienna, the congregation was enchanted, everyone wanted a

souvenir to take home – and here it is. Fool of Love is the art of the lied adapted for the 21st century, aka

“village pop,” as the experts are wont to say.

Suddenly there it is, the mysterious world of Shakespeare sonnets. Fool of Love is an extraordinarily clever, feathery and

musically ravishing approach to the poet. Caution, highly addictive! Kurier newspaper review

Franui sets reticent accents, slightly jazzy with soft, only sometimes sharp brass, complex harmony and rhythms

between polka and mariachi. The sonnets sound as they would have been written for this ageless music.

JOB CAROUSELAfter twelve years as Head of BBC TV Classical Music, Peter Maniura is starting a

new role.

For the last six months, he has been dividing his time between Classical Music and

the new BBC/Arts Council England digital on-line arts service The

established permanently, and Peter has been asked to continue at the creative helm of

Peter Maniura will still be working for the BBC but will be leaving Classical Music

Television assuming his new role on 1 November. Oliver Macfarlane will be continuing

as Acting Head of Classical Music.

“The twelve years I have spent as Head of Classical Music have been enormously fulfilling

and enjoyable and I’d just like to say thank you for your friendship, support and creativity

during this period. Leaving will be a real wrench, but I am fortunate because I’m moving to

what, I believe is one of the most exciting roles in broadcasting and the arts. I hope that I will

soon be able to discuss creative opportunities and new projects with you in the context of
