In 1945, President Truman was faced with an important decision:

Drop atomic bomb(s) on Japan or prepare for an all-out land invasion. The two atomic bombs drop would end up killing more than 200,000 civilians. The military estimated that an invasion could kill more than a million civilians and soldiers.

***I. The Manhattan Project, led by Robert Oppenhiemer, was given the task

of creating an Atomic bombA. U.S. officials feared the Germans would create

the bomb before the U.S.

B. Scientist found that they were able to create massive amounts of energy by splitting the atom.

C. In July 1945 scientists successfully test the first atomic bomb.

***II. Truman Decides to use the A-bomb

A. Truman Issued a warning to Japan to surrender or face complete and utter destruction.

B. On August 6th, 1945 an American plane (Enola Gay) dropped an atomic bomb onto the city of Hiroshima. -70,000 people were instantly killed, 140,000

by the end of 1945.

C. On August 9th the U.S. dropped a second bomb onto the city of Nagasaki killing over 40,000 people and 80,000 by the end of 1945.

D. Two days later Emperor Hirohito forced the Japanese government to surrender to the U.S.

E. September 2, 1945: V-J Day = Victory in Japan Day (Formal surrender)

***III. U.S. Occupation of Japan

A. Trials held for Japanese war criminals

-7 out of 28 leaders were found guilty and sentenced to death (including Tojo)

B. U.S. occupied Japan for 6 years under the direction of General Douglas MacArthur

-Called for a New Constitution (w/ free elections and women suffrage)

-Introduced a free market economy
