Ethiopians have a long legacy of success at the Olympics, particularly in running events.

Ethiopia first participated in the Olympics in 1956.

Since then they have won 21 gold medals, 7 silver and 17 bronze.

Ethiopia has won gold medals in both menand women’s marathon, 10,000m and 5,000m events.

Many attribute this to Ethiopia’s high altitude – much of Ethiopia is over 2000m above sea level.

In 2012 hundreds of athletes from all over the world took part. Thousands of people from around the world watched them

compete at one of the Olympic stadiums; millions more watched the Olympics on television.

For many athletes, competing in the Olympics is the goal of their whole career.

Haile Gebreselassie is an Ethiopian athlete and 2 time gold medal

Olympic athlete. He said “Winning a medal for my country is my

dream come true!”
