VISUAL ARTS
Catherine Leutenegger
Head On Photo Festival 2016
Swiss photographer Catherine Leutenegger will be visiting Sydney in May to attend Head On Photo Festival 2016 and to open her exhibition ‘Kodak City’. ‘Kodak City’ is the result of Catherine’s investi-gation into Kodak which was established in 1888 by George Eastman, who revolutionized photo-graphy and founded the photographic industry. However, by 2012, plagued by legal battles and the impact of the digital revolution, Kodak was bankrupt. Her investigation reveals what remains of Kodak as a business and the ways in which the decline of the company impacted the city of Rochester where the headquarters were established in
1888. It is a testimony both engaged and objective, covering a part of America’s industrial heritage that faces the inevitable disappearance. It is also a way of paying homage to the father of modern photography, George Eastman (1854 -1932) in his hometown, which he transformed into the cradle of the world’s collective memory for the entire 20th century. MUSIC
Eluveitie’s saga of success began just when mainman and mastermind Chrigel Glanzmann decided to form ELUVEITIE with the goal to fuse gothenburg styled melodic death metal with ancient folk melodies and themes to a powerful mixture that would soon become the „New Wave Of Folk Metal“. That was back in 2002 and Chrigel only meant to form a studio project
ARCHITECTURE
The Great Wall of WA - 230 Metres of Rammed Earth Wall
The longest rammed earth wall in Australia
and – probably – the southern hemisphere,
has been selected as a finalist in the
(Australian Institute of Architects)
Western Australia architecture awards.
At 230 metres long, the rammed earth wall
meanders along the edge of a sand dune
and encloses twelve earth covered
residences, created to provide short-term
accommodation for a cattle station during
mustering season. With their 450mm thick
rammed earth facade and the sand dune to
their rear and forming their roofs, the
residences have the best thermal mass
available, making them naturally cool in the
subtropical climate.
The rammed earth wall (construction) is composed of the iron rich, sandy clay that is a dominant feature of the site, gravel obtained from the
adjacent river and (bonded with) water from the local bore (hole).
The design of the accommodation represents a new approach to remote North Western Australia architecture, moving away from the sun
baked, thin corrugated metal shelters to naturally cooled architectural earth formations.
