But the truth is how many really know Farm Bureau? The first question you must ask is which Farm Bureau are you talking about? Huh? That’s right there are TWO powerful entities that answer to the name Farm Bureau! One, the original, is the Kansas Farm Bureau Association, and the other, the associa- tion’s flag ship member benefit, Farm Bureau Fi- nancial Services, a diverse and trusted insurance and investment company. Confused? Well it is a little confusing because as different as the two enti- ties are they have a great deal in common. It all began, so I am told, with the Farm Bureau Association, an or- ganized group of farmers and ranchers, realizing it would be a great benefit to them, as a group, to have a quality insurance product they could purchase. As the story goes, the associ- ation having been around awhile, had some credibil- ity, and in forming the in- surance business, granted it some of their credibility by sharing its name and logo. Thus forming the first generation of Farm Bureau Insurance that is available to purchase to the associations members! Since that time two very different identities have been developed as a great history has been estab- lished. The Kansas Farm Bu- reau is a proud state orga- nization that is a member of American Farm Bureau. There is a Farm Bureau association in almost every state in the union and together they form American Farm Bureau. They call themselves “The voice of agriculture” and one could defend rightful- ly so! They are very much a grass roots organiza- tion. The state association is comprised of county boards served on by local citizens in each of Kansas 105 counties. They are a farm advocate and when it comes to Ag issues when the association speaks our law makers in Topeka and Washington listen! Their advocacy for the welfare of farmers and ranchers and the com- munities of farmers and ranchers is second to none. I would challenge each reader and member to not only visit www. KFB.org to see what Delaney Implement Company In business since 1956 Delaney Implement Company has been doing busi- ness since 1956 and just wants to let you know that we are still doing business. Room and meals furnished and the fairest wage you can get anywhere in the state of Kansas. Special train leaving for Larned tonight.” The speaker was E. E. Frizell, then mayor of Larned; the time was early July in 1919. Pawnee County had its best wheat prospects in several years and there was a severe shortage of labor to harvest it. Although the Armistice ending the first World War was signed the previous November, demobilization was a slow process and harvest hands were in demand everywhere. Pawnee County had experienced near crop failures in 1917 and 1918. Now there was wheat and Larned busi- ness men were determined to save it for the farmers if they could. Headed by Mayor Frizell, a committee of busi- ness men combed the larger cities of the state, signed up willing workers with the lure of good wages, free transportation, and three or four weeks of steady em- ployment. Biggest potential labor market was Kansas City, and it was there that the Mayor and his assistants adopted their old style medicine show tactics to attract prospects. The campaign was a monumental success. Two special trains, one carrying 400 harvest hands, the other more than 300, pulled into the Santa Fe station on the eve of the wheat harvest. Farmers paid the railroad fare, business men provided the lip service that was vitally important in getting the job done. Other groups of workers were signed up at Wichita, Topeka, Newton, and at other cities. Some came from as far as St. Louis. A great crop was harvested and threshed. Other members of the Pawnee labor scouting squad- ron were Nathan Jones, V. O. Standish, C. T. McTyre, Perry Baughman, W. L. Earl, W. E. Wiggins, Charles Grimsley, Paul Margois, James Dunn, R. R. Davis, Hugh Freese, Ward Schumacher, W. A. Scott, and Todd Milloway. 620-525-6221 • 620-285-9376 (Jim’s Cell) Jim Delaney Service Manager
