Who presents the courses?

IChemE are in the great position of having highly qualified course directors who will provide the training. They have hands-on experience and may have encountered many of the problems that you may be experiencing. CV’s are available upon request.

How many people can attend?

We recommend that if you have six or more people to train, the most cost-effective route is in-company training.

Where does the training take place?

We will come to you, either at your company’s site, or an external venue of your choice.

How long does it take to organise?

Organisation of a course can be done quickly, but dates are dependent on the course directors availability.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes, all course attendees receive a certificate of attendance. If you successfully pass the Fundamentals courses assessment a ‘completed’ certificate is issued.

There are several different ways in which we can modify our standard material. All in-company training courses focus on your industry, and we can adapt the programme to allow subject areas of particular interest to be discussed in greater detail. Alternatively we can amalgamate modules from several courses to create a specialised course; or we can create a totally bespoke programme that is unique to your company.

What if I can’t see the training course I need?

IChemE has the knowledge and resourses to be able to create a training solution unique to your company. Contact us with your requirements.

What is included in the cost of the training?

The price covers the presentation of the course, all materials required, and course directors’ time. You will also have the opportunity to ask our experts confidential questions. Travel and course directors’ expenses are not included and will be invoiced separately. This information is given in greater detail on the course contract.

Successful partnershipsBuilding, sustaining and profiting from business-academic links

Businesses increasingly look to universities as sources of innovation and skills if they are to survive and prosper, and universities need business if they are to maintain research and teaching that are both excellent and relevant. But in the toughest financial environment for generations, both sides must be able to form, sustain and make the most of academic-industry links despite the differences between the sectors. Successful relationships can yield major financial and other rewards: unsuccessful ones merely disappoint. This masterclass will show you how you can maximise the prospects for success, and give you some practical tools and approaches to use.

Outline programme:

Including case studies to highlight success, the topics covered include:

– the expanding opportunity: why business-academic partnerships matter more than ever

– the businessman’s view: what companies look for in partnerships and why; examples of success

Six stage hazard studies in project managementSix stage hazard studies have shown that they can improve process safety and enhance project performance – giving better financial control, better time management and reduce last minute changes. The system allows critical issues to be identified and resolved early on in the life of a project, reduces reliance on HAZOP at too late a stage in the design, and provides a framework for handling HSE issues in a project.

This course shows how hazard studies fit into the life of a project and stresses their benefits and potential pitfalls. It allows time in small group work for participants to get a feel for how the hazard studies work in practice, and to understand the preparation needed to make them go smoothly and efficiently.

Safety instrumented systems according to IEC61511

Safety instrumented systems (SIS) are one type of protection layer as identified by a risk analysis (e.g. Layer of protection analysis (LOPA)). IEC61511/ISA 84 has been developed to provide rules and guidance for the implementation of SIS in the process industry sector. It should be noted that this standard is a ‘performance’ type standard which allows many different solutions for instrumented systems in risk control. The course will address alternatives in detail.

Process safety and the board: an executive programme in process safety managementThis one-day event has been developed by the Institution of Chemical Engineers with input from members working across several high hazard industries and from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to help boards in industries with major process hazards to review their understanding of process safety management as a way of keeping their operations safe and of meeting their obligations for the direction of their organisations.

The programme combines interactive sessions that debate the real issues and decisions faced by boards and executive teams with expert input from the process industry. Facilitated discussions enable the board to review its access to information, its understanding of key issues and its ability to make cogent and timely decisions that respond to the concerns of the public, the regulator, the staff, contractors and investors.

Making open innovation workOpen innovation is a key business issue for ambitious firms across most industry sectors. The key is to access and utilise new ideas and opportunities from a wide variety of sources, develop them effectively and then exploit them for maximum benefit – often using several channels in parallel for different application areas. Think of it as the innovation venturi! This course shows how to make open innovation work in practice, looking at the topic from the perspective of the main players involved: the businessman; the researcher or research organisation such as a university; and the policymaker who wants to see innovation flourish in a sector, region or country.

New to managementA manager must display skills and behaviours which are very different from those required of a member of a team. The transition needed to succeed is probably greater for someone moving into their first managerial role than it will be at any future point in their career. Unfortunately for many new managers – and their employers - the training they receive does not recognise the fundamental changes they need to make. With guidance however, most new managers can quickly understand and start to put into practice the necessary skills and behaviours. The course focuses on how delegates lead their team and deliver results through them. It recognises that attendees are likely to be professionals with significant experience of the workplace. It is content rich and fast-paced, providing learning points, hints and tips that will be of use to delegates for years to come.

Layer of protection analysis (LOPA)Layer of protection analysis (LOPA) is a semi quantitative tool for analysing and assessing risk on a process plant. It uses an order of magnitude technique to evaluate the adequacy of existing or proposed layers of protection against known hazards. LOPA typically builds on the information developed during a qualitative hazard evaluation, such as a process hazard analysis (PHA), and can be used to meet the risk assessment requirements of IEC 61508 and 61511.

This course covers the basic methodology of LOPA and the detailed stages of its application. Participants are shown how significant scenarios are identified and how frequencies are estimated for the worst-case events. They are shown how to assign risk categories and therefore determine the number of independent protection layers (IPLs) that should be in place. The specification and requirements for a protection layer to be accepted as an IPL are discussed.

IChemE international forms of contractThe IChemE Forms of contract suites are drafted as performance-based contracts for the design and construction of process plants and other output-based projects. Process plants are increasingly spanning national borders, and IChemE’s international suite of contracts reflect the particular needs of international contracting under a wide range of legal systems.

This two-day course examines the suite of international contract forms available (lump sum, cost reimbursable, target cost): their applicability to process plant contracts, their approach to risk and payment, and their structure.

The first day focuses on the duties of the contractor, the various stages of the works, the testing regime, and the role of the project manager, looking at the IChemE International red book.

The second day looks at risk allocation, the difference between price and cost based contracts and the consequent differences in cost liability, and the different payment terms in the three main contract forms – the lump sum International red book, the cost reimbursable International green book and the target cost International burgundy book. Reference is also made to the International yellow book for subcontracts.

Human factors in health and safety

There is an increasing emphasis on the importance of managing ‘human factors’ to achieve improved safety and business performance in the chemical process industries. Major accidents, including those at Texas City and Buncefield, have once again highlighted the importance of addressing this aspect of performance. However, many of the safety and operational professionals charged with managing human factors have no formal qualifications or training in the behavioural sciences. To help address this gap, The Keil Centre and IChemE have organised this 2-year development programme. It builds upon the needs identified in the process industries, namely:

– content covering human factors in process safety, health and safety generally, with links to other aspects of business performance;

– a modular course design, with short residential events spread over time, also providing networking opportunities with like-minded professionals; and

– consultancy skills development to help implement human factors solutions.

IChemE is the hub for chemical, biochemical and process engineering professionals worldwide. We are the heart of the process community, promoting competence and a commitment to sustainable development, advancing the discipline for the benefit of society and supporting the professional development of members.

The Keil Centre is a private firm of Chartered psychologists based in Edinburgh, UK. The Keil Centre has long-established links with the process industries through involvement in IChemE safety conferences, seminars and symposia, the European process Safety Centre, and international commercial consulting activities. See www.keilcentre.co.uk for more details.

Carbon footprinting

Climate change is increasingly recognised as the biggest environmental threat we face, and as such it is also becoming a critical business issue. Organisations of all types and sizes are under an increasing pressure to provide information on their carbon footprint and to demonstrate what they are doing to mitigate the effects of climate change. This IChemE course has been designed to help organisations address these pressures by providing hands-on experience on estimating the carbon footprint of their products.

This course is aimed at understanding the fundamentals for estimating carbon footprints of products, processes and technologies. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), used to calculate the carbon footprint along supply chains, will be explained and applied in a number of practical case studies and hands-on exercises using a carbon footprinting software tool. The focus will in particular be on the application of the PAS2050 standard for estimating carbon footprints. The advantages and disadvantages of carbon labelling will also be discussed.

Objectives:

The participants can expect to learn about a range of issues related to carbon footprinting, including:

– the requirements of the carbon footprinting standard PAS2050

– how to estimate a carbon footprint for business-to business and business-to-consumer communication

– how to identify and reduce carbon ‘hot spots’ along supply chains.

Who will benefit?

This course is aimed at corporate and other organisations, and could in particular be useful for:

– environmental and sustainable development managers;

– technical and operations managers

– communications and marketing managers

– r&d managers

– estates and business development managers

– any other professionals who wish to update their
