With under one month to go before exams start in earnest we know how hard our Year 11 and Post 16 students are working and revising. We have previously included advice on how to manage your stress levels during this time (available here) and we now turn our attention to the detail...your exam timetables and exam rules! The following five rules for sitting your exams are key: Morning exams start at 9am...afternoon exams start at

1.15pm. Please ensure you are in attendance 10-15 minutes before the start time of your exam. It takes time to get up to 250 students into the Sports Hall and into the right seats. There can be several different exams taking place at the same time. We are aware of the roadworks into Ilkley from Addingham and are investigating options to ensure you are not affected by them during exam time.

Please line up in the correct place for your exam, as outlined on your personal

timetable. You need to know exactly which seat and which room you will use for each of your exams. Not all exams take place in the Sports Hall. If you are in “S3”, or another venue, for an examination you should normally wait outside the room. If you have to bring a bag or coat it must be left at the front/rear of the room as instructed. You will find a card with your picture and name on the desk where you should sit. Examination Board rules state that you must be silent and face the front. If there is any communication between any students it will be assumed that you are cheating and will be treated accordingly. You must not talk until you have left the examination room.

Late arrival for an examination disturbs others in the room and could delay the finish

time of the examination for you. If you arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of any exam, Mr Baker will decide whether you will be able to sit the examination. The Examination Boards will have to be notified. Please ensure you allow enough time to get to school so if you are delayed for any reason e.g. traffic, you will still arrive in good time.

If you miss an examination you will not be able to do it

at a later time. You will have to wait until the next available exam season, which will be in the summer of the following year.

If you are ill and cannot take the examination, you must

telephone the school immediately and leave a message for the Examination Staff. You must provide a sick note from your doctor. Please see information later in this booklet. If you do not have a genuine reason for missing an examination you will be charged for that exam. Failure to pay may result in your results being withheld.

Year 11 Study Leave Dates 2016 Study leave for Year 11 students this year will commence from 12.30 pm on Friday 20th May. Although we initially set the date for Study Leave this year as Friday 27th

May, following recent feedback and discussions with a number of parents, we have now revised this date to Friday 20th May. This slightly later start date for study leave this year, compared to previous years, is in order to find a more appropriate balance between all students being able to access specialist teaching and revision right up to some of the early big exams, as well as allowing time for private study leave. Year 11 lessons will continue up to Friday 20th May - attendance in all lessons until 12.30pm on this date is compulsory for all Year 11 students. For the week commencing 23rd May, through to Friday 27th May, all Year 11 lessons will continue to run for those students wishing to access specialist teaching or supervised revision, though this will be on a voluntary basis and any students preferring to study independently at home will be able to do so. Once GCSE written exams have commenced, teachers will use their professional judgement to most appropriately utilise class time to assist students either with subject specific revision or, when there is an exam that afternoon or the following morning, allow students to conduct their own revision in preparation for this. After half term, from June 6th, there will be dedicated revision spaces in school, including the Library for impact revision, staffed by teachers, for students to continue to come into school if they wish to do so. This will again be on a voluntary basis, and students preferring to remain at home to study will be able to do so. Any students coming into school after half term, other than for an exam, should sign in and out at the library. The only exceptions to the above will be for a targeted group of students who would benefit from a more structured programme of revision in school throughout the examination period. Individual students who meet the criteria for this support will be spoken to directly about this in the coming weeks, and issued with a personalised revision timetable. Once students have completed their final exam, they are not expected in school until results day – Thursday 25th August 2016.

Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) – IGS Is Exploring More Formal School Partnership Working Many of you will have heard in the news over recent weeks that the government has extended its plans for academising schools (through the publication of its most recent White Paper – ‘Educational Excellence Everywhere’), where the intention is that every school becomes an academy by 2020, with most schools working formally in partnership with other schools by forming or joining MATs (Multi Academy Trusts).

Ilkley Grammar School, as a leading school in the region, and an established academy of almost 5 years, has been looking at how we can develop our partnership working more formally with other local schools for several months already. This has been steered through a governors’ strategy group that has focused on exploring and assessing the possible options available in the local and wider area, working closely with other interested schools’ headteachers and governing bodies.

Having reviewed the opportunities of partnership working, alongside the future potential benefits that a MAT could bring to IGS and its students and community, IGS’s Board of Governors has approved that the school should now look to apply to become a Multi Academy Trust, with the intention to work formally with both primary and secondary schools over the coming months and years.

The focus for our intended partnership working initially would be with schools in the local area that share our vision, ethos and values, and we are delighted to say that we will be working on the early stages of our application with Bingley Grammar School. In addition, we will be exploring the possible early involvement of other local schools, and will work with schools and their governing bodies over the coming weeks before finalising our application.

Introduction of Personal Best Time (PBT) From September 2016, we will be introducing an additional ‘Personal Best Time’ (PBT) lesson once per fortnight. This will focus on a wider programme of academic and pastoral support for you, along with further personal development and enrichment opportunities, by building on our ‘Personal Best’ (PB) philosophy. This bespoke new programme will include opportunities for enhanced student leadership, mentoring programmes and ‘vertical’ learning opportunities across Year 7-13, with a focus on developing a range of life skills outside of subject specialisms through our IGS ‘values’. The PBT programme will help build character and resilience, as well as increasing your knowledge and understanding of current affairs and the wider global world. The introduction of PBT will have an impact on the timings of the school day. The new timings from September 2016 will be:

Year 11s To Remain On Site During Lunchtimes From September 2016 From September, we will be in a position once again to accommodate all Year 11 students on site during lunchtimes, and so all Year 11 students will be required to remain on the school site during lunchtimes. This has become possible due to us bringing our catering service in house, as well as some planned changes to the social spaces available for Year 11 students.

Whilst we understand that some of you may feel this is a loss of privilege, this is not the intention – it means that we are better able to safeguard and supervise all of you throughout the lunch break.

Post 16 Professional Dress Code For All New Students From September 2016 As was first communicated to prospective students and parents at the Post 16 Open Evening in November, we are changing our Post 16 Dress Code for all new Post 16 students from September 2016. Over the past few months, our current Post 16 dress code has been reviewed in partnership with IGS’s Post 16 student leadership group, with the aim of better reflecting the high expectations of Post 16 students at IGS who act as role models to all students at the school and within the community.

The student leadership team, along with the Post 16 and Senior Leadership Teams have worked on developing a dress code with the jointly agreed aim of creating a smarter, more professional look, to help foster a sense of pride, whilst still allowing opportunities for personalisation and affordability. The dress code will be: Tailored trousers/skirt/dress (grey/dark/subtle colour of choice) Collared shirt/blouse/smart top (plain or subtle pattern/subtle colour of choice) Smart, plain jumper/cardigan or a tailored jacket (grey/dark/subtle colour of choice) Burgundy/black IGS post 16 tie or professional tie of choice (optional for girls) Smart footwear in keeping with professional dress Post 16 IGS identity lanyard. Final decisions on the appropriateness of any clothing (e.g. skirt length) will be at the discretion of the

Post 16 Team/LT

We had 3 teams playing in the White Rose Schools’ Rugby (WRSRS) Finals on Tuesday at West Park Leeds Rugby Club, Bramhope. The afternoon was a fantastic display of some of the best rugby teams around and all our players worked really hard outside of school to get to the final. Last year, we only managed to get one team into the WRSRS finals; this year, Year 9, 10 and 1st XV (6th Form) all took their place.

Our Year 9 team: Joe Wolf (9DSF); Matthew McGregor (9SP); Charlie Brow (9LG); Oliver Doyle (9PB); Charlie Wilde (9ACF); George Kapur (9SL); Archie Elgood (9LAM); Josh Rowland (9PDH); Thomas Davies (9LAM); Jacob Spauls (9LAM); Ashley McEwan (9SP); Cameron Hawdon (9LG); Fin Tunney (9LG); Reuben Tometzki (9ACF) and Sam Bretherick (9LAM) kicked off first and enjoyed the greatest success out of the three teams. They dominated throughout the games winning all of their matches:

IGS 40 v 15 TGS IGS 20 v 15 Horsforth IGS 25 v 10 Whitcliffe Mount

The boys finished as well deserved champions!

The Year 10: Oliver Greaves (10JK); Oliver Burton (10JDA); Tony Yarinakis (10KL); Quinn Stewart-Holmes (10JDA); Peter Davison (10CW); Jack Hamilton-Croft (10JDA); Sam McKinnon-Evans (10JB); Jake Miller (10MEK); Jacob Bradley (10MEK); George Pickles (10JDA); Alex Ford (10JPC); Nathan Hargreaves (10JB) and Ethan Mears (10JDA).

The team played some fantastic rugby but luck wasn’t on their side, finishing their matches: IGS 10 v 15 Parkside IGS 5 v 30 Wharfedale IGS 10 v 30 Ripon GS The 1st XV Team were strong but the competition were also on top form. The boys won 2 out of their three games but the force of Ripon Grammar School meant they were unable to take the top spot: IGS 10 v 0 Allerton High IGS 12 v 7 Roundhay IGS 5 v 15 Ripon GS

Congratulations to Mr Scott and Mr Fountain who took on a challenge of a lifetime at the weekend...they entered the ‘Fellsman’! The Fellsman is a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This being the case, the route does not follow well defined footpaths, so the entrants’ navigational skills with a map and compass are tested as well as their physical fitness. Because of this, only fit and experienced walkers or runners are encouraged to enter. The event started at Ingleton at 8.30 on Saturday morning and contenders had to navigate their way between 25 checkpoints, most of which were hill tops. Neither Mr Fountain nor Mr Scott had entered this event before and the weather was kind(ish) to them, with good visibility and no rain, although there were some light snow showers and temperatures hit below freezing through the night. After a gruelling 17 hours, Mr Scott crossed the finish line with Mr Fountain following 10 minutes later.

Well done to Sarah Pickering (12TG) and Lucy Jacques (12LCM) who took part in the Todd Crag Junior Fell Race held by the FRA Junior Championship on Saturday 16th April. Both girls ran in the U18s girls’ race with Sarah finishing in 2nd place in a time of 23:18 mins and Lucy closely on her heels in 5th position in 24:38 mins...fantastic effort girls! Congratulations to Mrs Knowles and Miss Brides who took part in the Skipton Triathlon at the weekend. Mrs Knowles finished the race in a staggering 1 hr 16 mins and 40 secs. Finishing 6th female overall, 2nd in her age category, our athletic PE teacher recorded the following split times: 400m swim—7 mins 22 secs; transition 1—2 mins 2 secs: 20km cycle— 45 mins and 9 secs: transition 2—58 secs and her 5km run was finished in 21 mins and 2 secs. Miss Brides finished 19th in her category with a brilliant performance, even with chain issues on her bike leg, of: a 9mins 6 sec— swim; 5 min 23 secs—initial transition; cycle — 1 hr 5min 8 sec; a second transition of 2 mins and 55 secs and a final run in 29 mins 23 secs.

Mrs Knowles

Miss Brides

Bravo to Harri Pitches (13AH) who has been accepted into RCS - Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow to study BA Acting. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is a national and international centre of excellence for performing arts education. Building on their roots in 1847 as a national academy of music, they are now one of the world’s most multi-disciplinary conservatoires, offering specialised and intensive teaching in dance, drama, music, production and screen. Usually the Conservatoire take older students who have applied year on year, or students from Drama Schools; it is a fantastic achievement for Harri to be offered a place. For those of you who were lucky enough to catch Oliver last year...you saw him here first!
