Eight- een members and partners ventured down the highway to spend the time playing our golf, enjoying plenty of fellowships, and undergoing that special experience of a District Conference. So we returned with improved swings, expanded waistlines, and stimulated brains. As with all conferences there was the good, the not-so-good and the inspirational. Overall a successful conference and one enjoyed by all – see a more detailed report later in this edition of In Gear. Our own Ken Mirams was one of the Rotary speakers (something he man- aged to keep quiet about). Ken spoke about our work on Sabu and the Solar Project in particular and did an excellent job. Our meeting this week has been set aside for a training seminar on the District 9810 Youth Protection Policy. As previously advised, the issue of youth protection is very relevant to Rotarians and it is important that all members are aware of the policy and their responsibilities when participat- ing in a youth program. And this applies to partners as well which is why they are invited to come to the meeting. Ken Mirams has prepared a short presentation on the policy and this will be followed by an interactive session that will help illustrate how the policy gets applied. Presidents Report No meeting last week as it was the District Conference at Geelong. Eight-een members and partners ventured down the highway to spend the time playing our golf, enjoying plenty of fellowships, and undergoing that special experience of a District Conference. So we returned with improved swings, expanded waistlines, and stimulated brains. As with all conferences there was the good, the not-so-good and the inspirational. Overall a successful conference and one enjoyed by all – see a more detailed report later in this edition of In Gear.

Our own Ken Mirams was one of the Rotary speakers (something he man-aged to keep quiet about). Ken spoke about our work on Sabu and the Solar Project in particular and did an excellent job. Our meeting this week has been set aside for a training seminar on the District 9810 Youth Protection Policy. As previously advised, the issue of youth protection is very relevant to Rotarians and it is important that all members are aware of the policy and their responsibilities when participat-ing in a youth program. And this applies to partners as well which is why they are invited to come to the meeting. Ken Mirams has prepared a short presentation on the policy and this will be followed by an interactive session that will help illustrate how the policy gets applied. Other important events coming up are:

On Thursday 13 April, we are off to the theatre to watch The Book of Mormons – no meeting at the VGC.

On Thursday 20 April, we have the Sons and Daughters night to which you are requested to invite a son or daughter (or niece or nephew or any-one else under the age of fifty) to showcase Rotary and seek their input as to how Rotary can become relevant to their contemporaries.

On Thursday 4 May, we are hosting the official opening of our indige-nous art exhibition “The Art of Kakadu”. This event, organized by a team led by Bob McArthur and in cooperation with the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile

Hotel, to be held in the Artrium space at the Bayside City Council offices in Royal Avenue, will take the place of our regular meeting at the VGC. It is unfortunate that the event is on the same day as the District 9810 Golf Day. However, golfers can attend both if they forego the golf day dinner.

And do not forget that the Farmers Market is on again this coming Saturday 8th April. The raffle will be in aid of Rotarians against Ma-laria (RAM). This disease is a significant killer (especially of chil-dren) in our near neighbours in the South Pacific. Coincidentally Rotary was praised last week on Radio National Breakfast for sup-porting the research team that has recently made a breakthrough in the development of an effective long-term vaccine. Having it availa-ble for general use may take several more years so in the meantime RAM needs plenty of support to continue its preventative work, in-cluding the distribution of mosquito nets which will be on display on Saturday.

from the second song and the dance floor never emptied until the last number. Saturday Night Dress-up: It was disappointing to see only half the attendees making a real effort but those that did were very good. Beaumaris was able to secure third place against some very tough competition. See photo-graphs. General Comments: The conference, though successful in terms of what it set out to achieve, may need to be re-vamped in duration, format and cost to reverse the falling attendances. Other districts are trying different approach-es and it would be interesting to see if these alternatives have been successful. The conference in 2018 is on the first weekend in March at BENDIGO. Report to Members on District Conference 9810 31-March – 2 April 2017 Attendance: Number of attendees was around 300. This continued a downwards trend over recent years Howev-er this number filled the chosen venue quite well. Venue: The Conference Centre, Cunningham Pier Gee-long This was an interesting, uniquely located and generally effective venue. Cabaret seating (tables of eight) worked well and encouraged mingling with other Rotarians. Sound system worked fine but line of sight to stage was awkward and speakers were not always clearly seen be-cause of the stage and backdrop setup.

Theme: Building Networks – Realising Dreams was the theme and most presenters used it to good effect. Speakers: The presentations covered a wide range of topics with a slight emphasis on international projects, with India and Africa being the main foci. Typically for a conference the quality of presentation and relevance of content was variable though the general standard was high. Paradoxically the most inspirational presenters were those who shared their life stories that did not involve Ro-tary directly. However, their common theme was the need to challenge yourself to realise your Rotary dreams. Food and refreshments: Generally satisfactory but not quite up to the best offered at other conferences. Saturday Night Dinner: The Pier venue proved to be a very good venue for the evening. The food and beverag-es were good. The live music was by a group led by Mel-bourne musician Jules Boult who is into Delta Blues mu-sic. It proved very popular; people were up and dancing
