Welcoming Our New Providers

For your consideration:

• The number of Americans, ages 65 and over, is projected to increase from 47.8 million in 2015 to about 98 million by 2060.

• Today, people who reach age 65 have an average life expectancy of an additional 19.4 years (20.6 years for women and 18 years for men).

Americans are living longer and living well for longer periods of time. This has created a growing demand for health care and provider services to meet the needs of an aging population. While many older adults are living healthy, active and independent lives, as more people reach their 80s and 90s, the number of older adults needing help with daily living increases.

As a health care provider and faith-based ministry, our goal at Agnesian HealthCare and SSM Health is to ensure we are preparing to offer the care needed for our older adult population when it is needed the most.

That’s why we are so excited to be opening our new 104,784- square-foot Christian Home & Rehabilitation Center in Waupun. The Christian Home is proud to offer a facility that will help to heighten our residents’ overall experiences with the dedicated health care professionals they have come to know over the years.

However, we all know it takes more than a new building to provide high quality long-term nursing care. It takes a commitment by employees and providers to continue offering quality care, as well as continuing our mission and the churches’ goal to meet the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of those we serve.

JUULLike cigarettes, Juuling delivers a dose of nicotine. Each pod contains 59 mg/mL. That’s equal to one pack of cigarettes.

Since neither vaping nor Juuling is regulated, there is no telling how high the nicotine levels actually are. Juuling is so dangerous that it is banned in some countries.

VAPINGTiny puffs or clouds of vapor are produced when using e-cigarettes. People often believe that the liquid used in vaping only contains water and flavoring, and are unaware that it contains nicotine. The fact is that it contains 18 mg/mL or more!

To get the facts, go to agnesian.com/juuling.

CIGARETTESThe average cigarette contains around 12 mg of nicotine. However, the milligrams of nicotine in cigarettes can range from 8 mg all the way up to more than 24 mg.

“If you haven’t heard of Juuling, just ask your kids. Don’t be mistaken by the fancy packaging and enticing flavors that are engaging teenagers. Juul delivers a dose of nicotine stronger than cigarettes and will lead to a generation of nicotine-addicted adults.”- Filip Troicki, MD, Agnesian Cancer Center radiation oncologist

“Students are trying Juuling unaware of the consequences and long-term effects. What we do know is that nicotine is harmful to a developing brain and all forms of smoking should be avoided.”- Aaron Sadoff, North Fond du Lac School District superintendent

“Every day, nearly 2,500 kids smoke their first cigarette, and more than 400 become daily cigarette smokers. The possibility of another generation getting hooked on nicotine is a nightmare health care providers are trying to avoid.”- Kimberly Mueller, MSN, RN, Fond du Lac County Health Department health officer/director

For Jeff Collien, and his wife, Lisa, fitness is core to their lives. As owners of Club Fitness in Waupun, Jeff, 50, knows what active lifestyles can bring to an individual’s well-being.

So, following an injury, Jeff was experiencing popping in his knee, as well as swelling and pain. Looking for answers, an MRI showed that Jeff had a torn meniscus.

“Meniscus tears can happen during a rotating movement while bearing weight, such as when twisting the upper leg while the foot stays in one place during sports and other activities,” according to Bert Callahan, MD, orthopedic surgeon. “Tears can be minor, with the meniscus staying connected to the knee, or major, with the meniscus barely attached to the knee by a cartilage thread.”

Dr. Callahan performed arthroscopic surgery on Jeff’s knee. He had surgery on a Thursday and went home the same day.

“Dr. Callahan and his nurse did a great job explaining the procedure to me and made me feel as comfortable as possible,” Jeff says. “The care I received was excellent, and I appreciated that I could get this surgery done so quickly and efficiently.”

He then completed physical therapy with Tom Lechner, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at Waupun Memorial Hospital. Jeff progressed from walking to therapeutic bicycling to unassisted squats.

“In working with Jeff following his surgery, I assessed his progress with range of motion, functional movements, pain level and muscle activity,” Lechner says. “I also worked with Jeff on exercises that were appropriate based on his capacity at each phase of rehabilitation. These exercises were transitioned into a home program that would allow Jeff to develop a solid base for daily movements and enable him to eventually complete more challenging activities fitting to his lifestyle.”

Jeff is sharing his positive experience with others who might be facing similar orthopedic concerns.

“I would encourage anyone who is facing similar symptoms to not hesitate to touch base with your primary care physician and then a specialist like Dr. Callahan,” according to Jeff. “It is wonderful to be back to doing what I love - spending time with my wife, four children and eight grandchildren, and being an active part of our fitness center.”

For 15 years, Bonnie Czoschke’s life was filled with inner turmoil. By Christmas 2017, no matter what Bonnie ate, she got sick, and suffered from acid reflux (GERD). At 64 years of age, the Brownsville resident wanted to enjoy her retirement after serving 40 years as a secretary with the Mayville School District.

“I had to be very careful with everything that I ate,” Bonnie recalls. “It was not uncommon to have instant pain in my stomach, almost like a heart attack. The pain would last sometimes 10 minutes but other times for two hours. Then I would vomit. That’s how it kept going.”

That’s when Bonnie turned to Andi Weigand, APNP, nurse practitioner. Weigand immediately referred her to an endocrinologist - James Findling, MD - as well as Jerry Evans, MD, gastroenterologist. Both physicians conducted various diagnostic tests to find the underlying cause of Bonnie’s health concerns.

A follow-up referral to Christopher Nervi, MD, general surgeon, showed that Bonnie had a hiatal hernia.

“In a hiatal hernia, part of your stomach pushes up into an opening (the hiatus) in your diaphragm,” according to Dr. Nervi. “The diaphragm is the muscle between your stomach and your chest. In most cases, your food pipe (esophagus) goes through the hiatus and joins your stomach. But with a hiatal hernia, the top part of your

stomach moves up through that opening into your chest. The top part of your stomach gets pinched. Stomach acid can back up (reflux) through the opening. This may cause heartburn and other symptoms.”

Surgery with Dr. Nervi was set. “By using the da Vinci robotic surgical system, we can create a stronger valve between the esophagus and stomach in a minimally invasive way. This helps to stop stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus. The procedure is so successful that patients might be able to avoid any further treatment for GERD, including medicines like proton pump inhibitors.”

For Bonnie, the surgery was remarkable. “I woke up and felt pain-free for the first time in a long time,” she recalls. “Dr. Nervi made me feel very comfortable knowing that he took every possible step before surgery for a successful outcome. He impressed me with his education on all options. My recovery went so well - I was able to sit up right away, and I honestly did not realize how sick I really had been.”

Thanks to her remarkable recovery, Bonnie encourages anyone to seek care right away. “I felt like I didn’t have surgery - I felt that good. I have energy now that I haven’t felt in a long time. And, I am enjoying spending quality time with my two children and three grandchildren.”

The most common type of acid reflux disorder is called gastroesophageal reflux, or GERD. Learn more at agnesian.com/GERD.

With God’s help, the love of a Christian wife and family, and excellent cancer care, Russell, 77, a Winnebago County resident, became a prostate cancer survivor. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test results are important to know as an elevated PSA is often an indicator of cancer.

Russell, founder of the Schwalbe Insurance Agency in Fond du Lac, now retired, was seen by his urologist, Aaron Johnson, MD. After following his PSA for 10 years and three biopsies, Russell’s PSA was elevated to indicate further treatment was needed.

An MRI of the pelvis revealed cancer and an MRI fusion biopsy was performed. Dr. Johnson collaborated with Michael Vander Kooy, MD, radiation oncologist. Treatment began with hormone therapy in late December 2017, followed by 44 daily radiation treatments.

“The results were incredible,” Dr. Vander Kooy says. “Not only were Russell’s PSA lower, they were almost undetectable at post treatment evaluation. Russell is now in remission and is a cancer survivor.”

Russell’s wife of 54 years, Pat, with whom he shares four children and 13 grandchildren, supported him throughout his treatment. A retired oncology nurse,

Pat shared that the team, talent and technology at the Agnesian Cancer Center is outstanding.

“The excellent care available locally made it possible for me to receive my treatments right here close to home,” Russell says. “If diagnosed elsewhere, treatments can be obtained right here. I was able to receive my treatments, and have my day back to do church work, yard work, fishing and spend time with family.”

The staff, receptionist, technicians and providers at the Agnesian Cancer Center made a difficult situation easier.

“From the ladies at the reception desk to the nurses and technicians to Drs. Johnson and Vander Kooy - they all made a difference. Staci, Ellie, Bonnie, Tammie, Bergi and Dani - too many names for me to remember. I would like to thank them all. They focused on my comfort, and genuinely cared for me. I cannot say enough.”

Russell enjoys playing hymns on his psaltery. He and some other patients gathered to play for the cancer team - a celebration of life and offer of thanks.

“With my faith, family and good friends to sustain me, I am back to living my life and enjoying my family.”

A Look at the Real Lives

of Savants

Darold Treffert, MDRain Man, the film that made “autism” and “savant” household words, was released 30 years ago.

I look back on my involvement with the Rain Man screenplay and writer Barry Morrow with much satisfaction. I was a script consultant for accuracy and sensitivity on the topics of autism and savant. The movie achieved both.

Little known fact - there were scenes in the original draft showing the lead characters Charlie (Tom Cruise) and Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) Babbitt in various situations that lacked credibility and believability. Instead a composite savant, Raymond, was created from spectacular abilities that exist in real life savants.

Embellishment is not necessary. Real life savant skills are spectacular by themselves, and the movie eventually offered a very realistic and accurate portrayal of those extraordinary skills and of savant syndrome overall.

Additionally, the end of the first draft shows the main characters enjoying a baseball game at a stadium after a week of interaction and everything seems normal. But one simply does not cure autism in a six-day cross country ride. Instead, Raymond boards a train and returns to the institution.

The ending, 30 years later, would be different - more optimistic and positive. After a stay in the hospital, Raymond would be released into the community to continue his good times with his brother and he would continue to work toward independent living.

Bryan Mischler, LCSW, psychotherapistI’ve known Jack Zimmer since he was five or six years old. Now, at 19, Jack is a student at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay where he is studying music production. Jack is a unique student, showing savant skills in both music and art. It isn’t often that savants have dual talents so this makes Jack’s story extra fantastic.

Growing up, playing music and performing were comfortable for Jack, but the everyday skills of social engagement, self-regulation or demonstrating manners and appropriateness were skills that took daily work and still do not come easily.

Today, the Treffert Center is a welcoming place for those like Raymond Babbitt and Jack Zimmer, and we actively provide hope and promise for their futures. The emphasis on working to the talent provides a framework for gaining skills in the secondary goals of self-regulation and manners. When a person feels recognized for the things they can do well they will have the stamina for doing what doesn’t come easy!

Thank heaven we are moving past the days of institutionalizing those with exceptional minds.

In 2018, Raymond could become an expert in helping solve real life challenges of internet security or teaching others how to be a mental calculator.

In the Fond du Lac area, Chatterton is a familiar name. That’s because Russell and Phyllis Chatterton dedicated many years to their business - the Chatterton Pharmacy - and were very active and driven. In fact, Phyllis was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a pharmacy degree.

As long-time Fond du Lac residents, the couple built a home to retire in - a single story home with a basement for easy access.

While Russell passed away 13 years ago, Phyllis continues to be very active with her three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

“I had heard about chair lifts and I wondered if this would be something I could utilize to access my basement where I enjoy crafting, braiding rugs and quilting. My oldest daughter and I went online to check out chair lifts and were interested in what the Agnesian Health Shoppe could offer.”

Phyllis received personalized service from the Agnesian Health Shoppe representatives. “I tried a lift while I was there and loved it. I had one installed and asked for some customization - it was important to me that the lift fit behind the closed basement door. The Health Shoppe accommodated my request and got it right the very first time.”

The new addition is greatly appreciated by Phyllis, but also by her children who are happy she is safe in her home.

“I am delighted with my chair lift,” Phyllis says. “I appreciate maintaining my independence and having full access to all of my home.”

The Agnesian Health Shoppe offers a full range of home safety equipment, including lift chairs, stair lifts, ramp access to vehicles or home, bathroom safety aids and more.

An eye injury led Victoria Olson, 62, a long-time Fond du Lac resident, to experience the color and clarity of a whole new world following cataract surgery with Adam Strittmatter, DO, ophthalmologist.

Victoria’s journey first started when she stumbled into a half open door, causing trauma to her left eye. “I had a black eye. Within a year, my vision was getting blurry, but I attributed that to old age. After two years, I knew something was wrong.”

When a cataract was determined to be the underlying cause, Victoria visited Dr. Strittmatter in spring 2018. “I needed to find out what was going on,” she shares. “I could hardly see.”

At their initial meeting, Dr. Strittmatter performed a thorough history and examination of Victoria’s eyes. “I was able to determine that her cataracts were the sole cause of her decreased vision,” Dr. Strittmatter explains. “I then spent a significant amount of time with her explaining what cataracts are, how we

treat them and the different options she had to best meet her vision goals post-operatively.

Once this was all explained, she was able to make an informed decision on how she wanted to proceed.”

The most important part of cataract surgery is the initial consultation, according to Dr. Strittmatter. “My goal with every patient is to ensure they completely understand their diagnosis and I provide them with all the available options.”

Cataract surgery was the next step. Victoria started with her left eye, and later pursued her right eye. “I remember coming out of surgery, and it was amazing how clear everything was. I almost cried. I forgot how clear and distinctive everything could be.”

Victoria now enjoys perfect vision in both eyes. “Now that I have completed this process, I would encourage anyone who has vision concerns to take action right away. It is so worth it, and I wish I would have done it sooner.”

Victoria says Dr. Strittmatter’s approach gave her great comfort. “So early in the process, he made me feel very comfortable. He was upbeat, and now that I have had great results, I like him even more!”

Health care providers rely on accurate test results to determine the next best steps for individuals seeking important medical attention. Accuracy and timeliness of results are essential to help guide this process.

Consultants Laboratory continually strives to offer the latest technology utilizing the most qualified laboratory professionals. For Consultants Laboratory, this is critical as they serve individuals, providers and other organizations in 10 counties, and run more than one million tests annually.

New technology has recently been launched at all three Consultants Laboratory sites - Fond du Lac, Ripon and

Waupun - including new chemistry and hematology analyzers, along with new automation lines in Fond du Lac.

In fact, Consultants Laboratory is the first laboratory in Wisconsin to go-live with the new Beckman Coulter DXH900 hematology analyzers, which are now connected to the lab’s automation line.

The automation lines help laboratory professionals efficiently process test specimens, providing information to help guide patient care. Sophisticated technology picks up abnormal test results that require immediate attention from clinicians. Medical technologists retrieve tubes that show abnormal test values and verify information for immediate reporting, as necessary.

“These new technological developments are intended to help our team deliver quality results for fast, accurate clinical decision-making,” says Nidhi Kumar, MD, Consultants Laboratory medical director.

Missy Schneider’s interest in health care was sealed during a school assembly focusing on Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP). She applied to the program, was accepted and started her journey to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at St. Agnes Hospital.

The YAP program is a two-year program that gives interested juniors the opportunity to learn about a variety of career paths, including health care. After earning her CNA certification, Missy was able to shadow professionals and providers in many health care departments.

Following completion of her nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Missy knew that Agnesian HealthCare was the perfect choice. “Agnesian HealthCare is a very special place to work,” she says. “Everyone cares so much for their patients.”
